OT CDrom question

My 8.1 system was setup with a 2x cdrom. Not fast but it worked. Since burning was not possible with this cdrom I recently bought a 52x24x52 cdrw which worked okay until it failed. No problem because it is still within the guarantee period. For the time that I have to wait for replacement I was given a 40x cdrom in order to be able to work with cd's Funny thing is that with this cdrom I am not able to read my 8.1 installation cd's. On some other data cd's it will work but on cd 1 it will not recognize. After a reboot with this disc in the tray it just ignores the cd and starts Grub. The same disc in my 2x cdrom on a reserve computer boots as before so the cd is still okay. Can somebody with more expertise on cdroms give me an explanation? -- NTReader v0.36w(P)/Beta (Registered) in conjunction with Net-Tamer.

X gone after video card change

Running 8.1 and waiting for my upgrade I had to change my Matrox G200 AGP card for a S3 Savage 4 card. I did not expect difficulties but was surprised to find myself with a blank screen. After some try and error I got into console and started sax2. No luck. sax was working for a short time but ended after telling me it was starting. Yast2 was a good choice because it gave me the possibility to change my video card into the S3 Savage but the net result was not the gui I expected. Going into console I had a look into the XF86Config and found that the video card was changed into Savage 4 with the accompanying driver. I am though still stuck in console without an idea how to get my X and KDE back. Could somebody help me with the right steps? -- NTReader v0.36w(P)/Beta (Registered) in conjunction with Net-Tamer.

SuSE 8.2 and IRQ problem

Hey Group: I have been working on a system that will not DHCP to the internet. This has been tracked to a IRQ problem between alsa VIA8233 and eth0 RTL8139too. Likely this is a problem with Plug and Play. At bootup the message shows up a error similar to eth0 (DHCPD) . . . . . . . . . . . - timed out - backgrounding. A check of ifconfig shows a valid DHCP IP# for eth0. Callup a browser or lynx - and use either a IP# or URL and it fails. A check of "routes" shows no gateway and no dns entry in /etc/resolv.conf. Using KNOPPIX 3.2 worked and SuSE 8.2 failed. I even reloaded to confirm it was not a bad load or dependence problem. The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP-ULTRA with VIA 8233 (sound), VIA 8255 (USB) and RTL8139BL (ethernet) chips. SuSE sets both VIA 8233 and RTL8139 on IRQ 10. Knoppix set them on different IRQs and works. Knoppix puts the RTL8139 on IRQ 18. We have tried /etc/init.d/alsasound stop and then /etc/init.d/network stop then /etc/init.d/network start. Then we wanted to switch some of our HP-UX/Oracle servers to Linux. After consulting with the Oracle people we decided (from there recomedation) to use Suse Linux for the Oracle machines. After setting up and using the first Suse machine I never went back to Red Hat. I very rarely use Yast. Coming from a HP-UX background I am more use to editting the config files myself (also I feel more comfortable doing it myself rather then letting a Yast do it). It is also easier for me to ssh into a server and make quick changes to config files rather then getting up and going to the machine and using Yast. You will find that Yast will save you a lot of time while you are learning Linux. But like your friend said a lot of people do get a bit too dependent on it. Just have to learn how to do stuff with out it if you do not want to be dependent on it. I found that where Suse puts stuff (IE: config files, web server, .....) just makes much more since (coming from my HP-UX background). One thing that always bugged me about Red Hat was putting the web pages for your web server in the /var directory. I have also found that Suse tends to setup hardware better then Red Hat. When we got our first copy of Suse in (where I use to work) I was struggling to get the display to work properly on my laptop with red hat but Suse configured it perfectly. But from a person that has used both, I would very strongly recommend using Suse. That is just my two cents for you. There's so much at stake that they'd have to know they can win before going to court. Of course, IBM can delay the process for sometime, outlasting SCO. There are other Distro's as well, I find Mandrake to be a very good server install, and SuSE to be an excellent workstation install, but that is _my_ opinion. You can get a lot of the same functionality from Debian, FreeBSD, NetBSD, or OpenBSD, as well.
