SCO shows Linux code to analysts "Last week, the company began showing code to U.S. analysts that, it claims, prove that the source code to the Linux operating system contains sections of code lifted directly from SCO's Unix code base. SCO's presentation, which has been seen by analysts at Gartner Inc. and Aberdeen Group Inc. features pieces of software that IBM contributed to the Linux code base, SCO said. That code was derived from SCO's Unix code, itself derived from AT&T Corp.'s System V Unix code, and then distributed to the Linux community in violation of SCO's licensing agreement, the company said. Unable to open .pdf files in mozilla 0.9.8

Mozilla used to open attached .pdf files using Ghostview [SuSE 8.0] but now instead it insists on saving them [God knows where] and returning me to the hotmail logon screen. Sorry I used to be a Windows user but 98SE put an end to that.I get stuck in a continuous loop. Have other users had this problem. I can open the attached .pdf file in IE and Netscape. DPMS settings?

I'm new to SuSE and still learning The SuSE Way of doing some things... I'm trying to change the DPMS settings for my monitor so I can custom-set the timeouts for blanking and shifting into different energy modes. I know I can do this with xset in my .xinitrc file (and I will if that's the only way), but I'm guessing there's a tool somewhere on the system that will do it for me. I've looked through SaX2 and the sysconfig stuff on YaST2, also through Webmin, but I've not found any Cool GUI that will set this. If anyone has any suggestions, I can check into it more. If not, I'll use xset and do it that way. Thanks! -Michael

Already looked at it from a previous suggestion, and it looks like a great tool. I'm still waiting for my new v8.2 to arrive, and I'll give that a whirl. How does Crossover differ from Wine? I saw a link on the crossover web site referring to Wine; Wine had a database listing of all Windows apps that were tested under Wine. Is this the same for crossover? Still doing some research, so I might have missed it. Just a thought, but have you looked into mplayer and mencoder? Mplayer is a video player with comes with an encoder (mencoder) that allows you to convert a video/audio stream from one format to another. In your case, you should be able to tell it to deal with just audio. If you type in: mplayer -ac help it should show you all of your installed (A)udio (C)odecs. You should then be able to use mencoder to do the rest of the work. I would imagine that if you can play the file with mplayer, you should be able to convert it. Check out the man page. I'm sure there are other ways to do this too. I haven't actually tried this, but it seems like it should work. what is permitted by suse's license; is it allowed to use a 8.x copy of suse in a company or must each suse workstation be installed with a bought copy of suse? SuSE 8.1 -> 8.2 Problems

I just received my 8.2. I know, I was a little late getting it this time. I put the DVD in the drive, copied it to a file server on the network, booted off the CD and did a network upgrade. At the same time I received my SuSE 8.2, I also recevide the new Led Zeppelin live video DVDs. After I kicked off the SuSE upgrade, I put the first Zep DVD in the DVD player hooked up to my TV. Zep DVD is great! I came back, to the system where the upgrade was running, and logged in. I noticed a little green circle in the tool bar and moused over it, it said something about doing an online update, do I clicked it. Started the update, and went back to watch the rest of the DVD. DVD is really great. I still can't believe the talent those guys displayed back then. I came back to my system and rebooted after the update. I logged back in, and everything worked. SuSE ROCKS! Thanks for the reply, Ken. I've got the VMWare download, and a trial license, just gotta get into the docs and see what the procedure is for setting it all up. Mostly, do I reformat the hda and allocate DOS/fat32 partitions, let VMWare do it, how to install the Winapps via vmware, etc. Should be a hoot, looking forward to axeing Windoze...... The only Winapps apps that I have to use is Word 2000, and Project 2000. streaming audio on mlb.com

does anyone on the list listen to baseball via streaming audio on mlb.com? every year it's half way thru the sason before i can get it working on a linux box, though it works well on a windows machine. this year i am still stumped. a paid subscription is needed to listen to games but there are usually audio clips that can be heard gratis.

SCO Linux lawsuit

It reminds me of a number of events such as when IBM was part of a certain standards workgroup and IBM tried to assert copyrights over the standards the workgroup was working on. Another example: the GIF image format. After years of use of the GIF files format, its owner comes out to assert its rights, probably expecting that, given the wide use of this image format, it could extort a lot of money from unsuspecting users. There seems to be a pattern where a company waits for its product to become a "de facto" format of sorts and then comes out expecting to "just rake in the money", as it were. SCO might have tried to insert code into Linux to set the Linux community up for extortion.

Actually, I agree with the thought of using a separate directory for the libraries, but it should only be necessary when the need library cannot be found on the system that you are loading on. You are probably correct in the cause of dll-hell, however if the libraries were more standardized it might help as well. There are certainly going to be new libraries, etc., that aren't shipped (even with SuSE) with the distro, but are still not application specific. So, in general, I don't know how apt could "find" it. I want it to be able to handle it either way. I guess there are several distinct cases: 1. Already installed. Simple. 2. Incompatible version installed 2a. apt knows how to get compatible version, installs it 2b. apt doesn't know how to get compatible version, installs the version shipped with the application 3. Not installed 3a. apt knows how to get compatible version, installs it 3b. apt doesn't know how to get compatible version, installs the version Can it do all of that? Can Joe Developer take his source code, do a single "make package", and wind up with a single set of things such that _any_ user with apt installed on their system can: 1. Insert the CDROM into their cup holder, click <install>, and sit back 2. Download a single set of files from some web site, and have the apt interface do the right thing? If so, then I stand *gladly* corrected. If not, we're not "there" yet. I'll grant that we're getting close, and that apt certainly sounds like a great tool that I need to explore, but I haven't seen any evidence that it can do all of this _yet_. Suggestions for checkbook program

Currently I have used quicken thru VMWare to sync checkbook data with my palm. Is there a direct linux alternative? As I have looked around, some will export to a .QIF file, some import, all seem to require the two-part of import/export the .QIF file. Also most seem only to go one way (pocketmoney). I see checkbooktracker will both import and export. Is it far enough along to be stable, reliable? Anyone with any experiences here? Richard

I'm using XFS as my underlying FS. i.e. Using iometer, against SuSE 8.2, I find Samba writes are about 3x faster than NFS v3 writes. Also, on my first use of NFS under 8.2, I copied a multi-gigabyte file to it. The whole FS locked up. I had to boot single-user and run xfs_repair. :-( I guess I'm gun shy at this point.
