Re: [SLE] SuSE v8.2 and Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop
Thanks for the reply, Ken.
I've got the VMWare download, and a trial license, just gotta get into the
docs and see what the
procedure is for setting it all up. Mostly, do I reformat the hda and
allocate DOS/fat32 partitions,
let VMWare do it, how to install the Winapps via vmware, etc.
Should be a hoot, looking forward to axeing Windoze......
The only Winapps apps that I have to use is Word 2000, and Project 2000.
I've been able to do
everything else a network engineer could hope to do via Linux.

I'm not much of a tinkerer when it comes to recompiling the OS, but I've got alot left to learn. Windows 2000 Pro sees the modem fine, so I know the device is working fine.
I use the modem lots, so this is a major deal for me to get thru before I can begin a stepped migration to Linux. The next major thing for me is to find out how to use VMWare for my Windows apps that the company is forcing down my throat.
Thanks, Jeff
I've been using VMware for about 3 years (on top of linux) and it is not as difficult as one might think. I use it for the same reason will be using it, forced use of some M$
products.

VMware actually lets you go 2 different routes. By default it will create the "filesystems" in a folder of your choosing, a virtual filesystem. Or you can partition a harddrive and use that directly. I let VMware create the virtual filesystems, that way I can move them around at will just like moving any file. Experiment a little, thats how most people learn. Ken

You *are* aware that VMware requires you to install and run an entire Windows system? If you just want to run a couple of winapps, you might take a look at Crossover Office from CodeWeavers.

If those are the only things you need windows for then forget vmware (a very good product, but too expensive and you STILL need a legal copy of windows). Instead Go to http://www.codeweavers.com/home/ and invest the princly sum of $54.95 and install your Word 2000 and Project using their CrossOver Office software. It works very well. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen
