Then we wanted to switch some of our HP-UX/Oracle servers to Linux. After consulting with the Oracle people we decided (from there recomedation) to use Suse Linux for the Oracle machines. After setting up and using the first Suse machine I never went back to Red Hat. I very rarely use Yast. Coming from a HP-UX background I am more use to editting the config files myself (also I feel more comfortable doing it myself rather then letting a Yast do it). It is also easier for me to ssh into a server and make quick changes to config files rather then getting up and going to the machine and using Yast. You will find that Yast will save you a lot of time while you are learning Linux. But like your friend said a lot of people do get a bit too dependent on it. Just have to learn how to do stuff with out it if you do not want to be dependent on it. I found that where Suse puts stuff (IE: config files, web server, .....) just makes much more since (coming from my HP-UX background). One thing that always bugged me about Red Hat was putting the web pages for your web server in the /var directory. I have also found that Suse tends to setup hardware better then Red Hat. When we got our first copy of Suse in (where I use to work) I was struggling to get the display to work properly on my laptop with red hat but Suse configured it perfectly. But from a person that has used both, I would very strongly recommend using Suse. That is just my two cents for you. There are other Distro's as well, I find Mandrake to be a very good server install, and SuSE to be an excellent workstation install, but that is _my_ opinion. You can get a lot of the same functionality from Debian, FreeBSD, NetBSD, or OpenBSD, as well. After some one mentioned djvu here, I'm scaning some text pages using djvu format - which is not very easy: it is not supported by xsane or gimp. Thus, I have to save the file as "file.pnm", and then convert, using a command like this: c44 -crcbnone -slice 17+13+9+7+5+3+2+1 file.pnm There is no "gui", and the man pages are not very helpfull about what command line I should use. In windows, payware, there seems to be a nice program to do the conversion, optimization, whatever. In Linux, I have to do a long set of trial-error runs till I get the appropiate quality-size tradeoff. The advantage is that the output file is smaller that the jpg equivalent, and better result for the same size, specially when scanning text pages. Now, I want to send this files to some friends, and at least one of them uses windows (and it is his employer machine, so there is no question of installing linux, unfortunately). The questions is: what windows, free program, can I recomend him to view my files? The djvuview program for windows is a cygwin thing, meaning he would have to install cygwin, maybe complete (X an qt suport, at least). (I know, this is a Linux list: but I don't use windows, and I have to interact with some of them. I'm hopping some one here has walked this road before :-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Mii-tool not forcing 100 Full Duplex

Samba is dog-slow. After digging through FAQ's, etc., on how Samba shares might transfer data slowly, I ultimately discovered that my network adapters eth0 and eth1 are set to 10Mb half-duplex. The statistics show errors and lots of collisions. I'm not surprised. I have 2 NIC's on the machine, eth0 is built-in to the Soyo KT-333 Motherboard, and the other NIC is a D-Link DFE-530TX+. Both NIC's load as an "8139too" and both on separate Irq's. When interrogating the links with mii-tool, I get: eth0: 10 Mbit, half duplex, no link eth1: 10 Mbit, half duplex, no link I've tried forcing them to go to 100/full-duplex using "mii-tool -v -F 100baseTx-FD eth1" and get nothing back. Checking again shows no changes. I've asked the LAN guy about the switch I'm plugged into and he hasn't gotten back to me yet. I tried having mii-tool try autonegotiating again but alas, no changes there either. I'm HOPING it's because the switch is set to 10/half-duplex. Has anyone ever encountered where you attempt to force the NIC with mii-tool to talk at 100/Full Duplex and it just doesn't want to take? Any ideas of where I can start? MANY Thanks in advance! DSL Router on 43mb HDD?

Hello people, I would like to setup my DSL router in the way that it DOES boot from HDD, in fact it's an old 43 MB notebook hdd. But how can I get this done using board-means from Suse 7.0/7.3? Installing XD2 on SuSE 8.2

I haven't tried Ximian Desktop 2 yet, but would like to. All I'm worried about is Ximian's RPMs interfering with my nice clean 8.2 install - I don't want any problems caused by installing hundreds of third party rpms. Am I being pedantic? I get the impression ximian's rpms replace a few important libraries etc. should this worry me? Thanks for any advice, Max Howell

cardids.txt is a file with PCI ids of audio cards and the correct driver for this card. But I found it yesterday: in the latest ALSA this file is dynamically generated when you run 'alsaconf' :-) However, thanx for your time and effort! When I have logins via SSH ( using PuTTy ) and the connection goes away because the connection was idle for too long, sometimes the login information is never cleared and the 'who' command continues to display that login even though that user is no longer logged in. What is the problem and how do I clear those logins out? Thanks, Jim

How to make acrobat reader to use cups

Hi, I installed my local printer and it works fine, however, when I try to print a document from Mozilla, or acrobat reader it uses lpr instead of cups, how could I tell the program to use cups instead. Thanks Jose

3 NIC firewall

What would be the best method of setting up a 3 NIC firewall under SUSE? I'm not really familiar with their approach on these things. Others would have you create an entry in the rc.X directories. Some would give you a special place for ifconfig related scripts for the iptables stuff. How would you do it here? I am assuming that a 3 NIC configuration (Internet, DMZ, LAN) it not inherently supported. -- The best defense against logic is ignorance.
