What happened to the 'compose' keyboard feature?

I need to be able to type the following without major obsticles. I spent dozens of hours getting this working in the past. It is no longer working. Nagios web-showing problem ...

I had configured and installed Nagios, version 1.1(and plugins some time after). Everything installed fine, and I managed to check one computer in my network. I edited needed config-files, so ./nagios -v ../etc/nagios.cfg runs now without any errors. But - there is a web-type of showing, what he checked. What should I type in a line of a browser ? I ran configure with such parameters: --with-cgi-bin=/nagios/cgi-bin It is installed as usually in /usr/local/nagios What should I type, or what should i change to get html view of my check ? -- -- Jedis are alive --

Help with crontab & script

I have a script I use to check the state of machine, when I run it from the /jobtrig directory it runs fine as "root". Choosing Linux Distro

Hi all, I've got a company that does Network Administration in several clients, but up until now we've only worked with M$ systems. I'm starting to use linux (just brought a machine home to install it), and my goal is to try to find out if with Linux we'll be able to replace some of our clients systems. One of my newbie questions is about what distro should we use. We need something that's not very complicated to start with, but that allows us to implement good server solutions. Right now I'm trying to choose between Red Hat and Suse. One of my friends (who is a Red Hat fan) told me that he didn't like SUSE because we were a bit dependant on their configuration tools (I think he mentioned YAST). What to do and how to boot after virus attack (mihai)?

Unfortunately I left SuSE Linux 8.0 Professional Server open tonight. SuSE Firewall 2 was temporarely deactivated. At 2 PM somebody from outside managed to implantinate a virus (dir /mihai and files like /.mihai, /mihai.tgz, /mihai/inst etc.). At the same time /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit was been over- written (with a call to wrapper) and the files /usr/bin/wrapper as well as /usr/sbin/wrapper have been overwritten with the code of /mihai. I'm not sure but it looks like other files have been affected as well (sendmail has gotten a date of tonight and is much larger than the original sendmail). Before I rebooted the server I removed /usr/bin/wrapper and /usr/sbin/wrapper. Now, the server will no longer boot. After mounting the file systems (reiserfs) the following messages appears: mounting local filesystems proc on /proctyp proc (rw) Then the server hangs. How can I get the server up again? It doesn't matter to me if I have to reinstall all software as long as I don't need to distroy my partitions and, more important, the file system on hda3, since I have a backup of all important config files and all datafiles on hda3. I tried to reinstall from CD, but this doesn't work too (options freely translated from German): - New Install Will create new partitions and overwirte my HD!?! - Update existing system Does not boot (same as normal boot from disk) - Start installes system Does not boot (same as normal boot from disk) What can I do? Any hints are welcome. See my earlier post - my install keeps losing the keyboard too, and I'm not using any odd hardware like the switch you mentioned. Anyone else seen this sort of behaviour? Know a cure? webmin firewall question

Hello all, Have question of above. Has anyone used the webmin firewall, and if so, does it work well? I have not used SuSE firewall, as I really do not need it internally. However, from time to time, I do have need to drop / accept an IP address "on the fly," and I thought this would be a quick interface to do so. I realize that a quick one liner can do this anytime, but was thinking about the nice webmin firewall feature for others on the network. Yikes! Both `red-carpet' and `you' are confused

After installing XD2 from the install script (using downloaded sources from disk), I see that red-carpet doesn't associate any of the XD2 _packages_ with the XD2 _channel_. When looking at that channel, it's blank. When looking at the whole list, the XD2 packages are shown as not belonging to any channel. Furthermore, when using YOU, it's confused about the mozilla packages. It thinks the XD2 Mozilla package isn't installed or something, and wants to remove everything that depends on it. Anyone else seeing this, or did I just get a fluke? Unless I can sort this out, I'm guessing I'll need to do a clean install. I'm not going to live with XD2 screwing up my package management, no matter how much I like the new versions of Evolution and Galeon. Regards, dk

Mozilla 1.4rc1, Mplayer-plugin & RealPlayer

Greetings all, Ok, first things first, this mail will be addressing the Mozilla build that is from SuSE's maintainer and not, to my knowledge, the one from mozilla.org site for part of these problems at least. After installing the new Moz 1.4rc1, I began to test it's new features, but started to find that some things like RealPlayer and Mplayer were not working any longer. During this time, I also updated the mplayer plugin to the newer 0.80 version. Everytime I tried a RP file, I would only get a blank page in Moz, instead of the normal RP window and the same with mplayer supported files. Doing some investigation and chatting with some late nite guys on the SuSE IRC chat line, we determined that there was now a conflict with the two plugins. It seems that the new MP 0.80 is programmed to also work with realplayer files, yet my /usr/lib/win32 .dll files (0.90) do not show such a file for doing these. Removing the MP plugin fixes the realplayer workings. I also tried the other way around, but because of the lack of RP.dll, mplayer would not work. I then downgraded the MP plugin to the 0.71 version and still could not get Moz to work with realplayer files. In talking with the irc guys, I found theirs would though, but they were using the Moz 1.4b files. I downgraded Moz at that point and everything went back to normal. So, the short version is this: It seems there is a bug with Moz 1.4rc1 from: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/projects/mozilla And a bug or not yet available feature which conflicts in the mplayerplug-in-0.80-2 from packman's site. If you have experienced the problems I described above, then you will need to remove mplayerplug-in or downgrade both programs as well. Help really needed.

Oh well, I'll give it another try... I'm trying to set up a SuSE 8.2 Pro system with Apache2 and php4, but after choosing these (with auto-dependence check on) the server will not interpret the php pages but instead it insists on sending me the files as "downloads". I've got a couple of hints on that I need to add this and that into the different config files, that wouldn't normally be a problem if the system was meant for me personally, but it's not, it's for a client, so I really would prefer to have it set up to be "strictly the SuSE way) of administering etc. So, is there a way to have Apache2 and php4 set up "the SuSE way", or should I stick to Apache 1.x on this particular system? KDE logout button missing shutdown options

I don't know what I changed, but when I hit the logout button in the KDE control panel it no longer presents the "restart" or "shutdown computer" options, only the "log in as different user" option. Anyone see this, or know how I can get back the shutdown? (This is on my own pc, and I'm the only user, and this is not the root user's desktop.) Thanks in advance! Craig Bell

The applications I'm talking about are Client/server applications, that have to RUN on the server, not just be shared. All the accounting, salaries, etc is done with those apps. And the users won't accept any app to do that that isn't Portuguese. I don't think its possible to put the server side of this apps in Linux (if it is, it would be great), and there provably aren't any Portuguese Linux apps that do that. That's my problem. <rant> Metacity SUX!! Where the hell does one change the font colors? I find nothing more enjoyable then trying to use evolution with white fonts on a white background. I believe this happened when a used the gtk config gui in XFCE, which didn't give white on white. Why these settings would translate over to GNOME is beyond be (besides the technical reasons of an obvious shared file/resource). I mean where is it written that settings one makes in one gui translates to all gtk based gui's? You might think that Gnome could be setup without effecting XFCE, BB, Enlightenment, etc -et al. BUT Nooooo! I miss Sawfish. After perusing Google for an answer (and Gnomes documentation has got to be the most obtuse and useless outside of the documentation for sound in linux) I came across quite a few mail threads on "brainstorm", apperently where gnome devs converse, and found something to the effect that having a setting for colors and fonts and/or both (e.g setting the colors of the fonts?) was a bad idea over the concept of the metacity theme manager and using that to set things up. Ok, fine! BUT Where the F**K is the settings of fonts, colors, or god forbid... FONT COLORS. I give full acknowledgement to the improvements in speed and functionality in this latest edition of Gnome. However, it still IMHO is not very well design in some very obvious places. This isn't a SuSE issue alone, RH's default Gnome setup is just as idiotic and useless. I really get peaved at the Idea of have Gnome pushed as the default desktop gui, especially in the corporate environment when someone has to jump through 59 hoops, take 4 years of programming, and be well versed in gtk coding in order to do something as simple as set the color of the fonts. Oh, but I can choose a camouflage background for Nautilus -- ya, that's freaking fantastic!... Nice "feature". I surely hope the guys at Ximian have done a better job at making the Gnome Desktop more user friendly and accessible - if not I can see a lot of user angst and bad press if SuSE begins to sell the Desktop edition to companies in any great volume. The various office workers that are confronted with such a braindead set of config options will surely drive the IT and management up the wall with the amount of negative complaints regarding how unfriendly the interface is. No offense to any gtk/gnome2 devs, I know you work hard at your passion, but I'd really like to know who's decision it was to go with the half-bake configurator call metacity. If I wasn't so tolerant I might say something like "he should be slapped". But that would be anitsocial and incite a flame war now, wouldn't it? <end rant> Curtis.

Network installation via ISDN

hi there, Is it possible to install suse 8.2 from ftp via ISDN external "modem"? I have Aethra NT-IP and I can't see any modules that will make it possible to establish a connection to internet and perform network installation. (p.s. i've burned boot.iso). Regards, Temp

Thank you all for your comments. I have placed a post like this one in some RH lists, and I got no useful answer. Patrick, thankfully I have nobody telling me what to do (one of the good things in being my own boss), so the reason I posted this question was basically to be sure I wasn't doing a wrong choice. I plan on starting to use Linux as my desktop system and then starting to use it as a Server to see how can it replace our clients servers. The biggest problem on moving from Windows to Linux is that most clients are small companies with only one server, and almost all of them have some windows apps that need to run on the server, so the server has to be windows :( As a newbie that I am, I'll need some support in the beginning, and this list is much more "user-friendly" than the red hat ones. Comparing all the comments I got from the lists, I decided that SUSE was definitely the best system to start with, so I already ordered it from amazon together with 2 books, "SUSE Linux Network" and "SuSE Linux Server". Any of you guys has any other suggestions about good literature that I should read after I finish up these ones? As many have here I am sure, so have I, given Red Hat a try on some occasion and we stay with SuSE because of that. I like Wayne, find RH to be more cryptic and difficult to install and even use beyond that. I don't think anyone can say it's a bad distro because of that, just more difficult to use in most cases. I live in the Red Hat state here in the USA, so there are many users around my area, I was almost one too when first starting. After reading several reviews on those available though, I chose SuSE. Many of the RH users I have gotten to install SuSE are still with SuSE! Many are new users that have seen both installed and they are still with SuSE, so that indicates much to me. Compare the costs of each Pro package and the contents of each. I think you'll find SuSE to be the best buy there. Consider the support also you will need, in fact sign up on the RH mail list and compare the differences. I haven't, but understand that list to be not as "user friendly" as SuSE's. Now the pros & cons (in my opinion): SuSE is easier to install and maintain SuSE follows the LSB closer SuSE has YaST2 SuSE & IBM like each other SuSE & Oracle like each other SuSE likes most hardware SuSE can take it's users from small to large, when they are ready SuSE is not Red Hat :o) Then too, remember, as the old saying goes, you won't get fired for choosing IBM hardware for your shop, so it is for Red Hat too. If you choose RH, you won't get fired as it will work well for you also. RH has proven to be a great Linux server distro and it is used heavily there. I believe their recent attempts at a desktop Linux have not been one of their best moments. They will get there, but if you are looking for both server and desktop, I think SuSE will make your move easier. Password cracking

As a matter of interest, has anyone on the list tried running John the Ripper on their password file? I just tried mine, and was rather alarmed! I have 3 users, me, my partner, and root. All 3 have passwords which are non-dictionary words, all have a mix of upper and lower case letters, and 2 of the three have numbers in them. John the Ripper has been running for 48 hours or so on my aging PIII-500 box, and has so far broken 2 of them! I suspect the third won't take too much longer, and on a faster box would have succumbed a long time ago. I thought my passwords were actually quite good ones. Clearly not.
