The applications I'm talking about are Client/server applications, that have to RUN on the server, not just be shared. All the accounting, salaries, etc is done with those apps. And the users won't accept any app to do that that isn't Portuguese. I don't think its possible to put the server side of this apps in Linux (if it is, it would be great), and there provably aren't any Portuguese Linux apps that do that. That's my problem. I plan on starting to use Linux as my desktop system and then starting to use it as a Server to see how can it replace our clients servers. The biggest problem on moving from Windows to Linux is that most clients are small companies with only one server, and almost all of them have some windows apps that need to run on the server, so the server has to be windows :(
Are you sure? We are running a SuSE linux server now for 3 years (started with 6.4) with mostly Windows clients, running several programs through Samba, such as Lotus Smartsuite, Open Office, and a mixed accounting program (Windows clients/Linux server/samba connection [Pervasive DB]). Since I was the one asked to do this, I couldn't use a Microsoft server, both for cost, stability, and security reasons, so we went with Linux. Things are working very well. :-) -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. As an experiment you might try the server edition of CXoffice from CodeWeavers. It runs Windows apps from the server to the clients. The ones I mentioned ARE client/server programs. Samba handles all the same file locking, access, etc., that a WinNT does (at least both Lotus Smartsuite and Open Office for Windows installed as server installs, with subsequent client installs on all the clients. Does that mean Lotus RUNS in Linux, no I don't think so. The Pervasive database used by our accounting system has Windows clients connecting to a Linux based database THROUGH Samba. The Windows clients don't know whether they are connecting to NT or Linux.

I understand that. I was only suggesting that with Samba, which seems to give Windows server apps all they need to work, your move to Linux servers while keeping Windows clients is much easier than it might appear. If your accounting program uses a database backend like MS SQL, and it will only use that one, then perhaps it isn't as doable for you for now.
