Sounds like the permissions on /usr/sbin/pppd are not set right. Can you run the above as root? -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
i get the same error on occasion, all i do is ps -aux | grep pppd then kill all PID's resulting and it works fine, sometimes i just try and restart pppd and it works just fine. It just a tweek thing is all, i think SuSE doesn't always completely close the program once the connection is lost. Hello John, It is a tweek thing. I rebooted the computer and that solved the problem. How do I restart pppd? How do you kill a PID? I'm sorry I don't know enough about this to see what you mean in your example. I assume your showing that the program wasn't completely closed when the connection was lost. But I don't see it. But I would like to. Anyway, this is where I am with the dialup logon: SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd-ifcfg), Version 1.00 on orion. I assume your showing that the program wasn't completely closed when the connection was lost. But I don't see it. But I would like to.
Anyway, this is where I am with the dialup logon:

to kill a PID you take for example:
root 10940 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? Z
Jun08 0:00 [pppd
<defunct>]
the 2nd field, (10940) is the PID psalm69:/usr/local/src/cvs # kill 10940 kills the process. now to restart pppd: I use Kinternet to connect, and it uses WvDial which uses pppd. you can manually start wvdial using a konsole with: /usr/bin/wvdial wvdial also uses pppd. now to configure wvdial: /usr/bin/wvdialconf type: man wvdialconf in a konsole for more info __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Thank you very much for the information you provided me. I have friends I'm introducing to Linux that only use dial up so I need to understand it well enough to at least get myself connected. There still is a problem with my connection:

What does it mean that the :
pppd: Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean: pppd: Problem: all had bit 7 set to 0

I tried the above as root, same output. So I shutdown took the modem card out and rebooted. Now it connects fine, almost. Thanks, Jerome
