Printer Sharing

I am trying to share my HP deskjet712 printer with my MAC OSX and Windows 2000Pro boxes. The printer is directly connected to my 8.2 box running CUPS and Samba. I just can't seem to get it to work. I get Access denied, unable to connect errors from the 2000Pro machines and the Mac reports that it is trying to connect and then times out. Could somebody that has a similiar environment include their smb.conf so that I can at least get a starting reference point. My family is beating me up because they can't print. Thanx, Dale

Don't know if it matters, but I config'd my 8.2 installation to use LPR to my HP Jetdirect for straight tcpip printing to the unit. Suse asked me which port to print to, that tells me that Suse connected to and received info from the jetdirect about how many ports it has. How can I get the correct driver to appear in the box? Am I going a long way round doing this? Seems really hard to set printers up in linux.... xinetd upgrade & 8.2

Hi, Yesterday I upgraded the xinetd via YOU -- some problems since. Runlevel editor says start in levels 3 and 5 yet shows is not starting when I reboot ( laptop and no suspend so no choice ). I changed disable = yes to disable =no in /etc/xinet.d/telnet and restarted xinetd and still connection is refused. This was working fine prior to yesterdays upgrade. Does anyone have any suggestions? TIA Francesco

I was gone for about 5 hours, and when I got home, it was done, so Hartmut and a couple others were correct about it just downloading the 'patch rpm's', and not the whole thing (I only saw the full size of each download, this is why I figured I'd never be able to do it with dialup. Is YOU supposed to show if it's just a 'patch' or what?). Everything went smooth so far (I haven't rebooted yet, but I *have* relogged-in. Should I do a full reboot?). Before I ditched AT&T broadband, then began silently filtering port 80 and 8080 for much the same reasons, I later found out. As one other responder said, if you need a web site for more than piddling around, most ISPs feel like you can spend the money for a business connection and site.... same goes with email. I ditched UUNet some time in the past back when I had IP addresses and freedom to do what I wanted, when AT&T pitched a "wondrous" development in cable modems "guaranteed" to make my connection faster and cheaper. Well, I got bit by their TOS like others did, so I did the next best thing and dumped them. I now have a slow ISDL connection, 16 IP addresses, and host a few people's email from friends and family. No more TOS to fight with, but I'm paying $159US for it as well. very strange ethernet problem!

Dear all, I have a really strange ethernet problem that has already mystified more experienced guys than me in the Linux world, but here it is... I am running a dual boot XP/Suse 8.1 on a Toshiba Satellite S255 and an RTL 8139/8139C/8139C+. Initially everything was ok and both XP and SuSe were running just fine. But then suddently and without any changes in the configuration the internet was not reachable anymore on SuSE even though the lights are blinking and the card is up (this was about 2 months ago). Under XP immediately after boot the internet is also unreachable but then after XP negotiatiates for about a minute or it can connect to net and everything works well. Now I have tried connecting my laptop to various LANs, both DCHP and fixed IP, and also tried a DSL modem at home. It does exactly the same everywhere EXCEPT that yesterday I tried it on one DHCP hub in College and it worked under SuSE right away. Needless to say once I got back home it wouldn't connect to the network anymore. I have tried another card as well but that was a disaster because SuSE didn't recognize it and I didn't know how to configure it manually. I have also installed SuSE in VMware 4.0 where through the bridged network thingy it connects to the internet just fine using XP. (I'd rather not have to use VMware and would much rather be ablet to connect to the network straight from my SuSE partition). Please let me know of any ideas or suggestions you might have!! SuSE 8.2, Dell Latitude D500, and xfree86 low resolution only (losing modes?)

I've searched the archives, Googled elsewhere, and read every FAQ, HOWTO, and man page I could find. This is a weird one. The situation: Dual-boot Dell laptop, running SuSE 8.2 and Win XP. Under XP, the monitor resolution is set to 1024x768, 60 Hz, 24 bit colour. The best SaX2 is able to do is 640x400, 16 bit colour. I can put up with 16 bit colour, but the resolution is not particularly good. The Hardware: $ sax2 -p Chip: 0 is -> Intel 855 GM 00:02:0 0x8086 0x3582 PCI i810 This has been attempted as an Intel 855 GM (i810 driver) and as a frame buffer device (vesa driver).
