Console resolution, GF4 problem and "YOU"

Can someone tell me how can I change console resolution. I think it was somewhere in old yast, but I cant find it anymore. I am using SuSE 8.2. Resolution is by default set to maximum and thats to small for me. Why do I need to use "acpi=off" to get my GF4 to work. I installed new drivers for 8.2, and I only get black screen, when I boot with default boot menu entry. When booting with "acpi off" GF works normall. Is it only me, or "YOU" actually resets icons on every KDE start, and deletes them when turning off? Thank you.

Hi all: If I do: $echo 'lalal' >> /tmp/some_file bash appends lalal to the END of the file. How can I make it so bash adds lalal to the BEGINING of the file? Thank you? PS: I've done it creating a temp file and using >> again, but I want to do it with just one command.

8.2 problem: Xserver crash

Fatal server error: no screens found Suse installation support says: HINT: You are experiencing this problem because the version of driver you tried to install is for an earlier version of XFree86, unfortunatly ATI have not released more recent drivers designed for XFree86 version 4.3 just yet, until then i would reccomend installing a generic display driver such as the VESA ones. you may however find more usefull information on the site below http://gatos.sf.net I installed the VESA driver using Sax2, rebooted, logged in, ran startx and got the exact same error message as above. So I downloaded the experimental driver 'ATI 4.3.0-9i386.tar.gz' from gatos.sf.net. I hope it works. Now I need someone to tell me how to load it properly. Thanks, Jerome

I don't have 8.2 yet, but maybe someone else could volunteer to e-mail you the 8.2 smp kernel rpms. Feels safer than using Mantel. If no one volunteers, send me an e-mail next week. Marcus, While trying to rebuild the libgphoto2 libs, I found out the culprit that was causing the unhappiness. There are 2 versions of the PTP driver. I moved the PTP2 one and then gphoto works correctly. There is where one can look to see why it won't play nice. I do not know alot about programming so I cannot be of much help :( I will when I get a chance try and mail the info to the maintainer of the PTP libs. Hopefully it all can be ironed out. BTW, man I did not realize how much stuff needed the libgphoto2 libraries! I just finished a complete (not update) installation of SuSE 8.2 Pro and VMwareWorkstation 4.0, it was a good dream, every piece of hardware was detected a lot better than with 8. acpi and power off run OK on my dual pentium 3 system. IDE dma is automatically detected and runs. ADSL USB modem detected OK. Just a few problems : - the root password is not kept in memory with kdesu !! Is there a solution ? - as in 8.0 the xconsole doesn't start at login even with the command line in Xsetup uncommented ( I had to use the method I gave for 8.0). - as in 8.0 the korgac doesn't start at boot. That's all. For those who are interested in, 'xawdecode' and 'xine' compile with errors with gcc 3.3. I had to compile with gcc 3.2 and install after. Catimimi. Thanks for comments.

Imapd in SuSE-8.2 does not work

Within mozilla-mail, I set up my email account so that it moves emails from /var/spool/mail to ~/mbox by using imapd. After the upgrade of SuSE-8.2, it suddenly does not work anymore. I enabled imapd from xinetd configuration. Therefore, it should work. I hate experimenting with pop3 becasuse it will erase all my email filter setup. That will be a disaster. Does anyone experience same trouble? Thanks. G. H. S.

new mantel kernel

Sorry if this has been gone over already... Has anyone used Mantel's 2.4.20smp kernel it has only been out since April 16th I'm just wondering if there are any major bugs in it that anyone has found or if it is pretty stable. 2.4.19 has been giving me a few problems with some scsi stuff so I want to try upgrading to see if that helps. Anybody know where I can find an RPM for ELM for a SuSE 8.1 system? I have elm 2.5.6-PL4 running on one 8.1 box, but I forgot where I got the RPM.. :-( Thanks, Jim
