which rpms can be used with SuSE

Hi I have quite a collection of rpm-files on my hd that I downloaded when I ran RH. I ran the following command in the dir where I keep them: rpm -qp --queryformat "%-25{DISTRIBUTION} %{NAME}\n" * | sort This showed that there are quite a few different "distributions" listed, which distributions are compatible with SuSE 8.1 Pro? Rpm-files that have SuSE as "distribution" will probably be ok, right? Or would older versions be incompatible somehow? How about the others? Is there a way to check? I/O Bound server?

Hi, One of our internal DB servers is currently showing each CPU as 0% idle in top, but it's still responsive, and the system load is still nice and low. It's been like this for a few hours now, and it's causing us a little concern. We're wondering whether it might be I/O bound, but we're reluctant to install sysstat on it, because of the masses of dependencies that would need to be fulfilled (this after all is a server tucked away in a comms room, so it doesn't have X or anything on it...). Anyone have any suggestions of other tools we could use to determine whether it might be I/O bound or not? DVD+ Writer

Have a HP USB DVD200e writer I want to use to make a data backup of my linux system. I've quickly browsed a few programs but they seem to use DVD- disc and I need to write DVD+ disc. Any suggestions? John

Nothing installed?

I am having a problem with my 8.1 system. YaST2 and rpm both report I have nothing installed on this system, libs, no apps, nothing. SO I cant use YaST to install or upgrade anything. RPM reports deps errors, and I must use --nodeps or install from source. THis all started during my last YaST software install. YaST hung during the final phase, and I left it overnight. I had no choice but shutdown and reboot and YaST and RPM have never been the same since. I have tried to rpm --rebuilddb, no change. Reinstall all the YaST parts using rpm -i --nodeps and rpm -Uvh --nodeps and no inprovement. Without any help, the only option I can see is a new reinstall, and I hate that option. Black screen, no NVdriver, new kernel?

Ok, as I feared, I updated the kernel k_athlon as was suggested by Roman D to obtain the need kernel fix. And I suspected that my nvidia drivers would be problematic (shock shock). So, I find that the kernel module/drivers is not being loaded at boot up. It is listed in the modules.conf (device # 195) and if I modprobe -k NVdriver it will load. But the associated "agpgart" that normally loads is not, of course, and I can do a modprobe -k for this and it will load as well. However, both are listed as "unused" and seem disassociated from each other. Also, using sax2 -l -m 0=nvidia or 0=nv I have repeated problems with init of my monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 753DF) which is listed in the XF86 4.3 monitor db (and I have the latest from the supplm dir on the SuSE ftp server). I have repeated problems anytime I even think about changing anything kernel related with the NVidia config, sax2, yast, and generally getting it to work in the slightest. Does any one have any suggestions? I can remove and reinstall, but IIRC someone has posted a specific manner in which to take care of this problem, something about a readme and/or special page in the sbd (I have searched the sbd at length and there are only the generic Nvidia help pages - most of which I can recite from memory). Seems that there were a special/specific way to install/config the nvidia crap that re-established it on a usable basis! (god I'm getting so tired of this, over and over again, every time something changes on the kernel level or similiar with sax and nvidia and loading the damn modules /end rant). TIA. Curtis.

Rosegarden

Hi, I'm hoping someone on this list will be able to enlighten me on Rosegarden, the note editor sequencer program. The new version is 4 0.8.5 and there are some versions for SuSE 8.0 and 8.1. It seems that one have to sign up as a member to download it. Well, it doesn't work to me. The suse-rpm-files aren't clickable at all. The tar.gz-file of 2.5 MB downloads as only a couple of kB:s. How is one supposed to download this? Anybody knows? Here is the address to Rosegarden. Here one can find the versions for SuSE. It seems one is (re)directed to a Kde site. For a very long time Sax and Sax2 have not been useful in configuring my system. I've heard others report similar problems with their ViewSonic monitors. For some reason, Sax(2) just wouldn't get along with these G810s. If kept shutting them down. Well, the ViewSonic 810 selection still doesn't work, but the generic 1600x1200 75 hz does work. This is a very good thing for me. Now I can set my system up and know that my hand tweeks are not introducing problems. Just thought I'd share something positive since I've been posing all these problem reports. STH

How to start a second KDE Session on Ctrl+Alt F8?

Hi, I used to have a nice button in SuSE 8.1 KDE, called "Start new session" which used to start a new KDE session on F8, F9 etc... Since I upgraded to KDE 3.1.1 it is gone. There must be something trivial, but I have no idea how to get it back. If anyone is still using KDE 3.0, please tell me what was the command behind! So is Linux ready for Multimedia

Yes I suppose I am going to cause some flame....I guess I apologize for that.... Just getting so frustrated with all this GPL and Linux crap today that I HAVE to say this. I tried all GPL based crap today trying to convert DV video to divX video. None of the Linux tools worked for me. THe only one that did partially was mencoder (part of Mplayer). Nothing else worked including transcode (which requires rocket scientists to work with---and finally it would simply hang trying to do anything). I spent hours and hours with no luck. I also tried the GUI for transcode named dvd::rip which plainly SUCKED and generated a bunch of erros trying to run transcode. In the past I spent hours compiling transcode and mplayer from source and all the other million dependencies it requires. MEncoder has a bug which does not encode the video from the specified # of seconds into the input files. Yes you give it an option like -ss 140, but the output really does not start at 140 seconds.....rather its some random # that I could not figure out. As a result I start guessing a number like 100 seconds, encode 5 second video....then find out its not where I want...then I guess 125....still not right...then guess 155...not right and too far....so guess 145...you get the story. As a result it took hours trying to do something that would have taken minutes on Windows. I got frustrated with it so much that I finally rebooted into Windows ME....downloaded some shareware...and got the task done in minutes! Simply click mouse button to select the beginning .... then click to select the end of the clip..... Press a button and voila!! its done. No compile from source crap.....not resolving dependencies crap. It just works. All the GPL based crap for video processing is in very early stages and not usable. I am waiting for MainActor 5 and see how good that is. I suppose GPL does not compete in terms of quality with commercial based products. Authors of GPL based software start projects with greate enthusiasm....but then they get tired by version 0.3 or 0.4 and stop working on it. Then another person gets the idea....and instead of taking whats present to the next level starts another project from scratch and then by version 0.2 realizes that its a much bigger task than anticipated and stops working on it. As a result we get 10 products that all suck. I would rather see one video processing tool that works. I dont' want 10 that simply are crap compared to the Windows counterparts. A few more days like today will simply have me go to BestBuy and get Windows XP and say good bye to Linux for good. Salman

Enabling Backstore in Xwindows

I have intalled Virtual Computing Network on my Linux and Windows computers. In the follow-up literature on the subject, one suggestion is to enable the "Backstore" option in X windows to improve M$ windows updates in X windows. I have been unable to find any information on how to do this. Can anyone give me any help or pointers? Thank you in advance. LW999.
