System hangs hard at various places during boot. When I replace the vga=791 with vga=normal for the "linux" boot option all is fine but I loose the initial blue SuSE splash screen with the boot info and it boots with a dos like screen.

Latest KDE upgrade and Kmail

When I started Kmail about an hour ago I couldn't read the mail. That is the window with the actual mail doesn't show anything, it's just blank, even the headers. I've tried to change just about everything: fonts, colors.... No luck. still just a blank page. Even when I sett the font to be the same all over. The only way to read a mail is to try to answerr, then I can see the entire text. I tried logging in as another user, then I couldn't get Kmail to show any text in any window. kio_fish under 3.1.1 in SuSE 8.0

FYI to all 8.0 users. The upgrade that was recently posted when installed says that the kio_fish pkg is obsoleted by a pkg in the upgrade..I don't remember which one complained about this but it does. Well, don't believe it. When you try to use Konq to connect via ssh to a remove server it pukes on loading the kio_fish.so plugin. And this is because it doesn't exist anywhere on the system. I downloaded the kio_fish rpm in the supplemental KDE directory and unpacked the RPM then moved the files over manually. Error using GTK themes on SuSE 8.1

Hi again, I'm trying to get GTK themes working under KDE (or GNOME, for that matter), but haven't been able to do so far with luck. Running gnomecc in the terminal brings up the control centre, but whenever I switch themes, the colors change in the preview pane (and in the application) but the images don't. In other words, I can't get rid of those ugly scroll-bars and drop menus! I use Evolution as my mail client and would like to equip it with a theme similar to the default KDE highcolour theme. When I change a theme through gnomecc I notice the below error printed in the terminal: Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate loadable module in module_path: "libpixmap.so", Sometimes the error is the same but with "libthinice.so" or "libredmond95.so", depending, I suppose, on what library the theme I'm trying to use is based on. Because of this, I guess this is a GTK engine or library issue to do with libpixmap.so, etc. (duh!) but having searched through this list's (and other list's) archives and on www.google.com/Linux, I've yet to find a solution. As far as I can see, SuSE 8.1 has GTK 1 and 2 fully installed, and I've ensured that all the engines and theme packs are installed (no themes (other than those I've manually intalled) show up in the gnomecc-->themes menu, however.) A search for libpixmap.so shows the file lurking at /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.0.0/engines/libpixmap.so. A few resources have suggested problems with the theme's gtkrc file, and I've also tried # export LD_LIBRARY_PATH= commands and updating the /etc/ld.so.conf file with paths to libpixmap.so and running ldconfig, all with no luck. Is this a problem with the SuSE 8.1 distro (I'm running a new, 3 week old install) and I can't see the forest for the trees? If anyone has had this problem or can point me in the right direction, I'd be grateful. Tim

Kscd

Hi This is probably an old chestnut by now but thought that I would ask anyway. I've just upgraded my own personal workstation to SuSE 8.1. Used Yast2 to update the system. Got the latest patches. Everything would seem to be working fine except Kscd which is refusing to play CDs. No music being played at all. Tried other CD software and that won't work either. Both my CD recorder and CD-ROM are working fine. I can use both of them to install software or make CDs. So, what's the problem here ? Can anyone point me in the right direction ? KWord / KOffice Printer

I was trying to use KWord, but it doesn't seem to see any of my printers. I even tried adding a printer from within it. It was able to print a test page, but the printer never showed up, so I can't print from it. Can anyone offer any help? -- Penguins eat butterflies, don't they?

I see... Were you able to mount the cdrom device ok with the music CD? I just popped in a music cd into my dvdrom and couldn't mount it like this: mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom when logged in as root. On my red hat 7.3 machine, the kernel associates /dev/cdrom to my dvdrom device. Like you said before, I am also able to install programs/etc using normal cd-rom's in that dvdrom drive on my machine. Its funny though how kscd starts up automatically when the music cd is popped into my dvdrom drive. It also has the right time of all the music on that cd in the display window. I just can't hear anything like you said. Like I mentioned above, it doesn't seem like the device is mounted with the music cd in there since I can hit the eject button on my dvd-rom and it pops open. I can't do this if a cd has previously been mounted in that drive. Sorry that I can't help you :-( ~~Nick Sound works fine. Can listen to the radio through an old tuner. Checked the sound settings and everything looks good. If I put a music CD in the drive Kscd refuses to recognise it and when I press play Kscd does nothing. Hmm... What do you mean when you say "kscd refuses to play cd's"? 8.1 pcmcia don't work

hey, i just upgraded a toshiba laptop that i have run 6.4, 7.1, & 7.2 on, to 8.1..................(just to see what all the fuss was), wow! what a change.........install was a chore as this machine won't boot from cd, i went through a whole pile of floppys before i found a few good ones to create boot and modules disks.........anyway my problem is during install, via NFS the pcmcia card worked fine - but after rebooting, the cards don't seem to be working or the card services are not starting during boot............the whole sysconfig thing is new to me and so is this "hotplug" stuff, can anyone explain how pcmcia card services are supposed to start now? i don't see anything in yast hardware about pcmcia, i did find and set up the network card, which BTW, i don't think i should have had to do AGAIN.............. Online Update has hosed my system -help?

Having vers. 8.0 installed, and noticing that 8.2 is due soon, I thought it might be a good idea to look for updates to 8.0. Noticing 93! security updates I just started YaST and did the online update thing, but got several errors and the system seems pretty messed up now. Obviously I can still get online with Mozilla, but Views of folders are failing with errors, Find Files won't run, and on and on. So I think I'm pretty much screwed here. I've only been using for 6mo so I don't know much yet. Any advice? Should I just reinstall 8.0 entirely? If I wait for 8.2, should I UPDATE or get the full package and reinstall? Desktop / Evolution problems

Oh, please tell me what on earth I did wrong!!! Taking a look at the different apps available on my system. Thought I would try out Ximian Evolution, looked cool. I was able to set up local mail, pop mail, calendar, tasks and an address book all with one app. Quick, easy, simple to set up. It worked nice on my tests. I was left with a few questions, so I clicked on "help" in the menu. OOPS!! I got several error messages related to CORBA, Gnome, and Nautilus (which I am not able to reproduce any more, sorry), one of which I still get: ""ghelp:///opt/gnome/share/gnome/help/evolution/C/index.html" is not a valid location. Please check the spelling and try again. " So I looked for the file at that address. It's there, no problems with the spelling, and I can access the file directly. After selecting "help" I also wound up getting a Nautilus window showing my home directory. These are not my real problems. My desktop was changed to Gnome!! I still have the KDE panel and panel menus (some of these items no longer function). The desktop menu and icons were changed to Gnome. In logging off (or restarting the computer), I am brought to my regular login manager, which lists users, desktops, etc.. Gnome isn't one of the WM options, never has been (I would eventually like to change that). When selcting KDE and logging on, my original desktop is brought up for about 3 seconds, then I get Gnome again. What do I need to do to get KDE back, and not have Evolution change me back to Gnome? Massive amounts of TIA! Bernd

I had this same problem with the fonts. Suse has newer xfree86 RPM's on their ftp site, as well as newer Qt ones. Mail server in front of another mail server

Unfortunately I cannot just say: remove M$ mail exchange and install a SuSE mailbox instead, since M$ has still some advantages for internal use! We would like therefore slowly go over to the new system by leaving the old system untouched. My solution would be: Mailserver mail.* gets all the mails, and use all tricks, like white listing, rbl, ... virus scan and forward than all messages to mail-internal.* (which is this unavoidable M$ box). How can I setup that all incoming mails are after proceeding forwarded to mail-internal? How can I make all outgoing emails going through mail.*, so that the header would be tagged and replies would go through? Third, I need to make the webinterface available of the Internal mailserver, this I will do by DNAT and use a port 8000 which will be forwarded to port 80 on the internal machine. Is there a howto for building a source rpm?

Gurus, Is there a HowTo that explains how to compile a *.src.rpm from the SuSE CDs and get an exact duplicate of what SuSE provides? I just tried to rebuild and install the shadow package, and the end result was a non-functioning server. (No big issue, it was a lab/test server.) === What I tried: rpm --rebuild shadow-4.0.2-47.src.rpm (copied from CD 7 of SuSE 8.0) cd /usr/src/packages/SOURCE tar xjf shadow-4.0.2.tar.bz2 (created by rpm above) cd shadow-4.0.2 ./configure --disable-shared --prefix=/usr --exec-prefix=/usr (from shadow.spec) make make install === As I said, everything seemed to work, but when I rebooted I ended up with / mounted readonly!! and KDE did not start up. I agree with that. I currently use red hat 7.3 at home and SuSE 8.1 at work. I find it totally offensive that Red Hat has decided to make a jump from 8.0 to 9.0 right away. Not only that, but I can find no mention of improvements from 8.0 to 9.0 on their web site even though they have a link to the 2 methods of purchasing 9.0. I personally hate blue curve so I decided to stick with 7.3. The anti-aliased fonts are nice but not a necessity. /etc/fstab

Help!!! I totally screwed up my /etc/fstab file. Sat installed 2nd hard drive. Called it hdb did an edit in /etc/fstab Then stupidly added hdb1 to the /etc/fstab file mon had to reboot app froze up on me kept getting no new final line in fstab upon boot time Had to fsck manually no luck,although i had 7.2(suSE) install disks so I installed 7.2 on the second drive was able to edit /etc/fstab file from there.But I think I did it wrong Can someone help The other option I have is to Buy 8.0 and install becuase my 7.3 disks got scratched Not unless someone,would be able to lend me 7.3 or should I just for 8.0 PLease help I'm feaking out

mdbtools - failure compiling mdbtools-0.5rc2; GLIB library in "wrong" place

Hello! I'm trying to compile a tool called mdbtool (a program to read MS access databses). But It's failing when cheking for glib library. It is obviously looking for the library in the wrong place. As far as I can see I have this library here; "/usr/lib/glib" and "/usr/lib/glib-2.0". Now what do I do? How to find out where the program is looking for this library? Font cache rebuild?

I can't remember it and was hoping that someone might be able to tell me the command and perhaps some other options for the command and/or dealing with the fonts and the cache. I updated to kde-3.1.1 and am having the problem with the screen going wacky/unlegible and then a spontaneous re init back into the kdm login screen. This happened right after I updated X to 4.3 and using kde 3.0.5. I had solved this problem, but now that I have kde 3.1.1 installed it has returned. I am running XF-4.3, KDE 3.1.1, on 8.1. Hello folks, short time, short go today: I need a web design program for Linux (I use Suse 7.3 here) which can use the files from NETOBJECTS FUSION 7 (Winsuck) Explanation for those who are interested: I ran into installing the NOF 7 pack, and it requires that god-damn Win Internet Explorer 5.5 - and as I am moving away from Windoze, I will NOT get that thing. I run Win98 for whatever purposes that Linux is yet incapable to deal with, and Windoze98 does only include IE4.7. Another good example that Windoze sucks major d...!!! Log Script problems

Here is what I received to for the first time, prior to this I never got any logs. running daily cronjob scripts SCRIPT: clean_catman, OK. SCRIPT: do_mandb, OK. SCRIPT: logrotate exited with RETURNCODE = 1. SCRIPT: ouput (stdout && stderr) follows Reload syslog service..failed error running shared postrotate script for /var/log/mail /var/log/warn /var/log/messages /var/log/allmessages /var/log/localmessages /var/log/firewall SCRIPT: logrotate ------- END OF OUTPUT SCRIPT: suse.de-backup-rc.config, OK. Hey Group: Has anyone dealt wih these mysql/qt modules. libqsqlmysql-non-mt.so libqsqlmysql.so I have downloaded and install MySQL 4.0 and qt-X11-free-3.1.2 Both have compiled cleanly. I requested mysql support in qt and it does build libqsqlmysql.so. However, I cannot find enough information on libqsqlmysql-non-mt.so to get it built. I have checked Trolltech an MySQL only to find very little on the "non-mt" part. These modules allow a GUI based program to communicate with MySQL. By the way qt-X11-free-3.1.2 seems to make KDE faster and so far only screws up kconsole (sig 11 problem). Most likely this could be fixed if kconsole was recompiled. Hi, I just dld (thanks) the latest abiword -- and installation failed -- it seems the package is looking for /etc/opt/gnome/.gconf I have /etc/opt/gnome/gconf Is this because I am still running a pretty stock SuSE 8 and gnome things have changed since then or is this a package issue ( excuse my ignorance ) Regards Francesco

Hello ! If I take a backup for a table the files resulted have owner mysql and mask 640 . How can I change umask in mysql ? mysql -u user -p database -e "BACKUP TABLE MY_TABLE TO '/path_to save'" I find this link ... http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/File_permissions.html I put in /etc/init.d/mysql : UMASK=438 #666 in octal export UMASK Same result ... installation problem on Dell Dimension XPS 350

hello, I have the following problem... --> I am trying to install SuSE 8.1 on a Dell Dimension XPS 350, with an extra Adapted Scsi card, and a plextor CDR...nothing unusual... The installation goes well, until he installs the packages. Each time, between 30 and 100 packages "have had problems". When you click on "details", it gives you just a list of the package names. Each time, the package "xmodules" shows up in the list, ... --> after package installation, the kernel (re)starts, following the normal installation process, but the start of the Xserver fails, of course. And using YaST2, in n-curses mode, I cannot get these packages to install properly... --> I suspected a problem in the SuSE CD's, but I tried valid ones, and it succeeded. --> I suspected problems with my CDRom drive, and I replaced it, but it doesn't solve the problem. check the mysql database, it appears you have lost user related information, try from phpMyAdmin or MySQLControlcentre to have a look at what is in the database.. you will have to grant specific permissions for the new users..
