New mobo, is Epox EP-8KRA2+ (VIA KT600) a good choice?

I am thinking of upgrading my (old?) computer, and the cost/preformance ratio tells me that I should go for this MB. I will at the same time spring for a AthlonXP 3000+ with 400MHz FSB and DDR-ram to match. Now from what I read on www.viaarena.com they have quite good linux drivers including precompiled for SuSE 8.2, which happens to be the version of choice for me until I know I can upgrade without experiancing all the small troubles I see on this list. This mobo has it all and it worries me: ATA-raid, SATA, USB2.0, NIC, Sound. Has anyone tried a similar mobo, and if so could they tell me of their experiances. Sigh, I'll have to reinstall Windows when/if i buy it, well that's a lesser problem. A blessing acctually, it is growing full of small anoying and impossible to fix errors.(as any version of it does after a year)

Swapping SCSI hard drive with Linux?

Hello SuSE folkz, I've rsync'ed my existing SuSE 9.0 Linux installation on a SCSI hard drive, which I want to install into another compatible SCSI system but under different SCSI ID. My question is what do I have to change in replicated hard drive installation, except mount points in /etc/fstab file, in order to connect it to the SCSI controller under different SCSI ID? Trying to use a Mac address for my firewall....help?

My office has a SuSE firewall and a SuSE 8.2 mail server behind it running imap. I can access my mail server from home because I setup my IP address on my firewall. Now, I'm trying to setup my laptop to access the mail server, but instead of using an IP, I want to use a MAC address. Why? Because I'm on the go and I can't always know what IP address I'm going to have and I don't want to leave that port wide open all the time. That works fine though... Ahah -- thats your problem (I think:-), NIS is not setting your groups up properly when you login (your original suspicion is correct). I do not know anything about NIS, so you probably should reask your question with an appropriate NIS/groups containing subject so the NIS experts on this list have a look.

OpenOffice rpm vs tarball

Files created with OOo as supplied with SuSE 9.0 (ftp version) produces icons for zip fipes. Clicking them extracts their contents, but does not open them in OOo. Any simple cure? Thanks, Steve.

Sluggish and jerky mouse and unresponsive KDE/X in 9.0

Hi all. I have a question which probably has been in here a zillion times, but i cant seem to find anything about it. Setup: Clean 9.0 install on dual celeron 433 (smp) Intelimmouse Explorer (USB) Matrox G400 DH (Xinerama mode) "Focus strictly under mouse" is set Auto raise is set at 300 ms This setup worked lika e charm under 8.2 even with autoraise at 600!! My problem: The respons is VERY bad. The pointer is very jerky in its movements. The windows respond about a second after the pointer enters them. Draging of windows is extreemly sluggish. Audio help please....

Hi all.... I am now learning how to make CDs. I have no problem at all with data disks. But I'm a bit lost with audio disks. Today I used K3B to make an audio disk. But when I tried to mount it I got an error that it did not know what the disk was (don't remember, but the normal unknow FS error). Is there a special way of using audio disks on my system? How do you guys play audio disks? Upgraded from 8.2. to 9.0, now can't boot (Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:07)

I was running SuSE 8.2 happily, but wanted to update to 9.0. So I added the 9.0 directory of an ftp mirror site to my list of installation source sites in YAST2 Control Center. I then chose System Update. All appeared to go rather well. I confirmed that I wanted to do a default install and it confirmed it was upgrading from 8.2 to 9.0. It spent many hours copying and installing RPMS, then ran SuSE.Config and prompted me to reboot. I rebooted and now receive Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:07. I'm still pretty green on linux and am at a loss as to what to do next. I'm guessing that the system will be fine once I figure out what it wants in order to mount my file system, so I don't want to do anything drastic. Any hints? Thanks, Luke
