Strange remote crash

Some days ago, my remote machine crashed. I think that some process grew up using all the available ram. If I am not wrong, these logs confirm that. Dec 26 17:35:32 praisenet kernel: __alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed (gfp=0x1d2/0) Dec 26 17:35:32 praisenet kernel: VM: killing process nmbd I got many line like those. My question is: how can I find out which process made my machine crash? I had installed courier imap some time before the crash and I am suspecting it to be the cause of the crash, anybody had a similar experience? I know I can limit resources for remote users via pam, but I am not aware of a similar way to limit system daemons too. How could I do that? Praise

Help!! user root doesnt exist

All of a sudden whenever I try to do anything as root, I get the message 'user root doesnt exist.' The last thing I did was to add users to my users group. Did not mess with root. Now I cant even start yast! Any ideas on how to recover from this? TIA Richard

ftp install script ?

A couple of weeks ago, someone posted an install script that cut their download time to 144 minutes, from days. I can find the script via the archives, no problem there. My question is this..the instructions were to install this in the directory tree where ver.xxxx was. I must be an idiot cause I'm missing something probably plainly obvious, I think.. I'm not sure where to, or how to, insert this script in the series of dialog boxes in the course of my install..I'm using 9.0 now actually(27 hours via dsl), but I'm sure I'll end up doing it again before I go buy ver 9.xxx, cause as good as SUSE is, they really do deserve some more of my $ Anyways, if someone would be kind enuff to lend a few words, I'd be most appreciative... Lee

README.linux.console???

My computer is still running with 8.2 , KDE 3.1 right from the CD. Did some updates via Yast and some via Synaptic. As before I did not run into problem apart from following info which shows when I use Konsole on my desktop: Font `-misc-console-medium-r-normal--16-160-72-72-c-80-iso10646-1' not found. Check README.linux.console for help. The Konsole does not have its normal size but much wider then usual. Tried to find the README file but was not successful. Somebody knows what I am missing?

Grub Background Help

Hi All, I have been doing some digging on this Grub Splashscreen issue. I found what I thought was the answer but it doesn't appear to be. Is SuSE using their own version of GRUB? Anyway, this is what I found: ------------------------------------------- 1. Instructions 1.0 Requirements for GRUB splashimages: 1. xpm.gz file type 2. 640x480 3. 14 colors only 1.1 I have my image, now what? 1. Gzip your xpm file and put it into your /boot/GRUB directory (or to any directory of a /dev/hda1 partition). (do: `gzip myfile.xpm`) 2. Edit your GRUB config file (aka /etc/GRUB.conf) and add this line: splashimage=(hd0,0)/GRUB/myfile.xpm.gz NOTE: Change the partition and directory according to your system's setup. 3. reboot and cross your fingers ------------------------------------------- I noticed that the command here is "splashimage=" and SuSE is "gfxmenu=". This is why I think SuSE is using their own version of GRUB. What format is "message"? I tried changing the format to jpg, png, xpm, and xpm.gz but nothing will open it. Anyone out there know what this file is? Thanks Russ

How to correct a chmod +x * -R command

Hello all and Merry Christmas, I have done a stupid thing and issued a chmod +x * -R command while in the / directory. This is on an internal server, not connected to the 'net. I had thought I was in my /public directory but wasn't. The command stopped with an error when it got to the /proc directory but by then it was too late. What are the consequences here and what can I do to rectify them? All help appreciated Keith Gibbons

Most stable at high resolutions *2D* video card?

Hi Folks, Just wondering if anyone had opinions on what card would be best for 2D on SuSE 9.0, as far as stability and speed at 1600x1200@85hz. I'm sick of all the Nvidia problems I'm having, I'm considering getting something else completely. 3D performance (or even support) is of no importance to me. Thanks, Matt Beazer
