SATA installation

I just recently built a new machine and the hard drive is a Seagate Barracuda 160GB SATA (crap! Don't buy). Anyway, I'm stuck with it now and that would be fine if I could get Linux on it. SuSE 8.2 does not recognize the drive in the installation. I have done some research and have found that many other people are having the same problem, especially with this drive and chipset configuration. I am running an ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe with the Intel 875P chipset. I am not sure of the SATA controller chipset, but I know that it has an onboard Promise RAID controller, I don't think the Promise chipset controls the SATA drive in a non-Raid configuration though. I am not using RAID. Anyway, what are my options to install SuSE? From what I understand the 2.4.22 kernel and newer has support for SATA drives, and that I must launch the installer from at least this version of the kernel. I believe I could install SuSE on an IDE drive, upgrade the kernel, and somehow launch the installation from that drive. Is this possible? Also, I am planning on upgrading to SuSE 9.0 anyway. Would this alleviate the problem? Or would I have the same trouble? XScreensaver on 9.0

Just a heads up for everyone who's noticed the crash bug in XScreensaver in 9.0, SuSE have beaten me to it and fixed it (nice one guys - I assume it was Olaf, cos it was his patch that provided the workaround of the SUID issue). MP3 to Audio

If you want to rip to mp3 youll need to use the lame encoder and use grip to make the mp3. Then with k3b you can select the files to burn. SuSE Burning to CD/DVD

I just recently downloaded SuSE 9.0 via FTP. Does anybody know how or have any references on how to burn this folder to CD or DVD. I would like to burn the folder to DVD. However, the folder is >7.7GB, so it won't fit on one DVD. My main problem is deciding where I am supposed to partition the file distrobution. My best guess would be under the /suse subfolder, because that's where all the installation packages reside. repair system

Hi, ** This is for your information ** ** No disrespect---I am a Mandrake user for yrs - usually no problem doing this on MDK---still practising & learning Suse ** While practising on a spare HD I installed with rpm a kernel.....on Suse 9.0...like... rpm -Uvh k_athlon-2.4.21-121.rpm. *(yast and I do not understand each other yet).* Ok after install & reboot I was not able to my *little know-how* to get the system going. So I thought re-install...then I saw & took the option repair...auto repair...some interaction up to finish and reboot ...the OS is running on new kernel now. I like that - :) I am sure there should be an easirer way? Thanks Johan May this be a good day for learning Registered Linux user # 330034 - still learning

misc SUSE crap about the ftp version and gnome

Now this is just silly. The base (whole of 9.0) was just added to apt. Now I have over 1031 pkgs being upgraded because the packages in base are newer then the cd versions. The updated packages were not in update as they most likely just should have been but now it looks like pretty much an entire system upgrade. WOW! Isn't this just silly. Get:1 ftp://ftp.gwdg.de SuSE/9.0-i386/base glibc 2.3.2-92 (what apt is getting) The glibc that installed from the cd's is version "glibc-2.3.2-88". I think next time I'm just going to wait for 9.1 to hit the ftp site before upgrading anything but security based issues. There have been like 3 updates to KDE and now we have YaKDEu. Im very new to Suse, and am having a little problem understanding whats happening with Java. Open Office keeps complaining about JRE being missing. I tried to install eclipse and it JRE/JDK, but it couldn't find and install it. How do I go about installing a JDK under Suse ? I usually just download the .tar.gz and copy it to /usr/share/jdk1.4/ etc... But I am trying to do it the proper way this time.... Mof.
