Display installation troubles

Hello, Im just starting with Linux and Im stopped in my first steps by a problem about which I can find no help in the SUSE documentation. Ive bought SUSE 8.0 a few weeks ago and Ive installed it on my Pentium IV Dell with a nVidia GeForce 2 Display adapter on AGP bus. Everything seemed to go fine except the fact that I couldnt do anything because of the display: when in KDE, the desktop was overlapping the monitor screen size and was moving right and left, up and down, following the mouse moves and never allowing me to get a whole view of the desktop. . Looking for some help on the Suse Web Site, I found that the nVidia Display adapters were not fully supported by SUSE 8.0 and that I was to get the right driver from the nVidia Web Site. Not knowing anything about Linux yet, and, therefore, not knowing how to install a driver, I decided Id rather change my display adapter and I bought a Matrox Millenium G550, still on AGP bus, which is supposed to be fully supported by SUSE 8.0. (I was told so by the seller). I installed this Matrox display adapter, which works perfectly well with Windows XP on this PC (just as the nVidia did: so, its not a connection problem). I re-installed Linux SUSE 8.0, which I had removed from my disk, and Im facing the same problem: the KDE desktop overlaps the screen size, and rolls in every direction when I move the mouse. Of course, Ive tried to change every option I could in the YaST2 control centre (not easy when the display is always moving) but nothing does. I suppose this is a very trivial problem in relation with my complete ignorance of Linux but, as I am still willing to discover Linux, could someone tell me how to fix that (if possible without buying another display adapter)? Id like to discover a bit more about Linux than just installing it :-) Thanks in advance. Jean-Jacques

Hmm, thanks, Gerry, but I think this is more for doing back-ups than near line storage. If I just want to do backups, the options are numerous. Thanks for trying, though. Bye for now, Stuart. <snip> I believe Compaq sell the ATL tape libraries and it sounds like you have one of the small ones. I believe that you can use the free version of ARKEIA with it. The free version of ARKEIA will support one scsi attached tape drive (they support DLT) to backup a maximum of two clients. I don't think the free version supports multi streaming??? The free version may even support the automated library's robotic operation!

Hello, Rodd. This is a valid point, but the data I would want to use it for would be mpeg movies and MP3s downloaded from the web, i.e. non-critical data. Even if I don't use it for much, I am interested in trying to make it work as a technical exercise. If the data on it were to get lost, it would not be the end of the world. And as for losing the tape, I would hope that this kind of facility would have some sort of fault tolerance, something akin to RAID for tapes. Maybe such a thing doesn't exist yet; I'm just starting to research the possibilities. Thanks for the warning, though, Stuart. <snip> Stuart, I would caution using this method for near-line storage. The age of your existing tapes may contribute to data loss if you're constantly accessing specific areas on tape. I have seen this occure with medical imaging systems that use tape as a near-line storage media. However, if you only access large 'chunks' at a time...it should not be a problem.

I had that problem once with my Dell 8100. It has to do with the bios. Hello! here here!! suSe proved to be a power horse sound system not like windowzzzzzzzz as a alpha and beta tester for 10 years I should know! Both my system run ONLY linux the hell with pirate version of widows that kill processors. My P 4 1.3 suSE 8.0 pro support over 100 users on ircd plus i use lots of ftp max system use 9%. I will support another version IF it proved a major change not simple cosmetique a la microsoft style. Pierre Gazzola! SuSe rock leacher that pirate are just plain idiots... MAJOR revision from them, or minor ones when there is a pressing need, but the prices here in Australia (according to one retailer, their buy price is the same as the end user in Germany !!) have gotten to a ridiculous level.... Please, continue to support SuSE by buying at least the major revisions - otherwise we'll get "please feed me" email from a certain Chris M...:-)

how to tell Yast1 that the sane softs are installed as tarballs.

Hello, Stupid question. SuSE-7.3 I wiped out the sane package because there was a problem finding the HP Scanjet6200C (usb) driver. I untarred and installed thus the last sane-frontend and sane-backend-1.0.8 tarballs and everything works perfectly. But: everytime I install or uninstall a package with YAST1 it insists to install the sane SuSE-7.3 package which is unoperational. How to tell Yast that the sane softwares are already installed and that I don't need the SuSE-7.3 package? SuSE help-center: How do I adjust font size? Need help.

I truly love Linux and SuSE. They are the greatest. I have a small problem though. How do I adjust the font size in SuSE help-center? I know I can enlarge the view of the help center with the magnifying glass icon, but I have to do that every time it start the help center. There must be a way to more permanently change the size of the fonts. Perhaps there is a config file somewhere I can edit? Anyone with the solution please reply. A search for this on the Compaq site yields no results, although there is a reference to it on the Arcserve site listing it as a supported device for their products. I am trying to decide which avenue to follow for this device. I would like to either use it as a back-up device or as a near-line storage device. If it could do both simultaneously, that would be awesome, but I think that's unlikely. My question is, does anyone know of any freely available utilities that would help with setting the device up as near-line storage ? I have found a few commercial offerings out on Google, and Freshmeat drew a blank, too. I can't spend a great deal of money on this as it is a home machine. I'd like to use it get our large collection of MPEG and MP3 files off the hard drives and free up some space. Thanks, Stuart.
