Hi, I ran SAINT and was told that its going to create a directory called .Xauthority. Well after I finished using it, I deleted the ".Xauthority" file along with the ".mozilla" directory in the root directory to save space. Did I do the right thing or did I remove something that could harm the normal working of the system? TIA Leo

I am using gdm which allows for multiple xservers with associated graphic logon screens to be configured. Currently I use 3 @ TTY's 7 thru 9. Maybe this could help you 2 questions for any aficionados 1. how to increase the number of TTY's acting as consoles? (Possibly one could then automate the manual start of X by say, adding 12 to the current TTY when less than 7) 2. where can I obtain more faces for my login manager? -- Regards, Sylvanus A. wget --> wierd symbols

I noticed that sometime "wget" fails to traslate/download symbols correctly from the URL. For instance I've just got the following instance of the mentioned problem: Comparison of equation ? with equation ? shows that ... It there any way to fix that ? Thank you in advance. Maura

Accessing USR message modem

I have a US robotics message modem. It is an external modem and connected to Com port 2 (ttyS1). With earlier versions of SuSE (up to about 7.1), I could use kmsgmodem to view fax messages, access voice messages and switch on computer independent features. kmsgmodem is based on KDE1 and therefore needs the old kde and qt libraries. Does anyone know of a package that you can be used as an alternative on SuSE 8.0? Would be grateful for any advice or information. I currently have an ADSL connection, so I only use my message modem as an answer and fax machine. If there is a way to use my ADSL modem in a similar way, I'd love to hear about it. TIA Eddie

[SLE] 8.0 Network config problem (gateway)

Greetings, I'm in the final stages of setting up my laptop on a local network via a PCMCIA card and have succesfully configured the card and can reach everything on the local network. I can ping my main server, DNS, and gateway, and can retrieve names and IP addresses from the DNS (i.e., if I try to ping a computer at UCSB, my former school, the DNS returns the IP address and starts the ping but nothing happens. Try to telnet to the computer, nothing happens. Tried with various other computers at different locations to no avail.) If I run /sbin/route -n or /sbin/netstat -r I return two lines, one with my local addresses (192.168.27.0) and a netmask of 255.255.255.0, and the other line beginning with default and showing my gateway address (192.168.27.1). I originally entered all this information in under Yast2, but since I'm using PCMCIA, I'm wondering if it didn't make it's way into the correct files. TIA, Chris

PPP dialer scripts

Hi I have a small masquerading mail server/gateway set up on my home network (two clients). I have set up a manual connection to my ISP using standard dialer scripts. I would now like to use two sets of dial up scripts - one for when I want the gateway to stay online until I explicitly hang up, and another that will initiate a connection, collect and send mail, and then hang up immediately this has been done i.e. I can leave it unattended once the connection has been established. Printing margin problem Epson C80 SuSE Gimp print

Hi, I recently purchased an Epson Stylus C80, and am using it with SuSE 8.0/ CUPS + Gimp print . Everything works great and it prints great color photos but I have an irritating problem when it comes to printing full page images and cups test pages. While there are equal sized boarders at bottom, right and left of the image area when printing a full screen image, there is no upper border and the top of the image prints against the very top of the page. I am using American 8.5" 11" letter size paper (or 216mm x 279mm) and have set my paper size to letter. I have tried almost every option using the KDE print front end including center image and custom margins and YaST2 to correct this problem to no avail. Any suggestions??? -- Be positive and you will prevail.

i just installed apt-get, after reading about it in many posts. After running apt-get update there was some seemingly odd output, i attached the whole session, but essentially for every package it said "WARNING: 'hwinfo' has 2 packages with same version but different dependencies. That usually means a packaging bug." This repeats for every different patch or package. Does the two package warning have anything to do with the fact i have two listings in sources.list? Or does it have to do with the patch rpm's? maybe i should stop guessing! here is what i have in sources.list, besides the commented debian stuff. rpm ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt SuSE/8.0-i386 base usr-local-bin funktronics packman-i386 packman-noarch update kde gnome gnome2 mozilla ximian extra security rpm-src ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt SuSE/8.0-i386 base usr-local-bin funktronics packman-i386 packman-noarch update kde gnome gnome2 mozilla ximian extra security Also, was i supposed to remove the debian listings in /etc/sources.list? Wich dependencies ? You can prove to install the archive with rpm or kpackage. It's easier with kpackage. You can do that simply with konqueror as root by clicking on the archive. If you have installed kpackage, it will run it and even if the install fail, you will get a list of the dependencies. But, if the install is not working with Yast, i think at you have another problem. You can prove to do that with ftp. In yast click to change the installation support, note what you have, choose ftp and as ip adress write 195.176.255.9 and as directory /mirror/SuSE/suse/i386/8.0 Dominique Michel Dr. David M. We recently bought SusE 8.0 and are installing it on everything... We have a workstation in the lining-room and have multiple users on the machine. VIA 800 Mhz ITX, no fans, 30GB HD, no CD, no Floppy.... It is time consuming to logout and login as another user... All users are using KDE Is there a convienient way to swithc from one user to another... something like <ctrl><alt><Fx> TIA Gerald
