I use Linux most of the time, but for some difficult tasks I still have to use Windows, e.g. a simple tranlation by words. In Windows I use babylon, excelent program, where you just point at a word and with SHIFT-RIGHT mouse click a translation pops up (different languages, different dictionaries, PLUS online dictionaries, ...) Cygwin...where do I start???

Evolution says gnome pilot tools are not installed

When I try to go through evolution pilot settings, it comes up that gnome pilot tools do not appear to be installed. The help says to check gnome control panel for pilot settings. Could find no pilot settings in the gnome control panel. Checked with Yast, all of the pilot tools are installed. I can also connect with jpilot. Why can I not connect via evolution? Suse 8.0 KDE 3.02, gnome 1.4 Art

I am having the same problem, however, I found some pilot tools on the SuSE DVD and installed them. I then got jpilot to work, but still have not gotten Evolution to work with the pilot. What tools did you download from gnome? The help says to check Apparently the gnome-pilot tools are not included with the evolution.rpm. I did not see them on the SuSE site under the Gnome downloads so I downloaded it from a gnome site and installed. So far I have an option in the configuration panel for the pilot, but I can not seem to figure out how to tell Evolution I want to sync with the Palm Pilot or even how to start the sync. Good luck. I have tryed 2 applications for ICQ on my SuSE 7.3 licq kicq2 Strange thing is I get disconnected from the server after 5 minutes. Everytime i reconnect, it happens again. I wonder if this is an application problem, or something is happening to ICQ servers, or (may be) applications mentioned above lack the configuration need to make it work behind a firewall (due to UDP, ports, etc), because I dont know if these applications need incoming UDP ports or something... Is there any application for ICQ beside the 2 mentioned above BTW, I also tryed the new ICQ2GO using Netscape 4.78, but it also hangs up..... (i think this is a problem from the applet) Thanks I think that ICQ has been change the protocol, because it happened with all old ICQ. Only works the go.icq.com, but the Netcape 4.x java support is very bad. Upgrade your Netscape to Netscape 6 or Mozilla. I´m usin go.icq.com with the mozilla. It is the only form to work icq in linux

Resetting the parallel port

I've been having problems with my parallel-port scanner under Linux (nominally an HP3200C, actually a Umax in disguise). If the machine state isn't exactly right, the scanner either isn't recognized at all or is partly recognized but gives a stream of error messages. The only cure I've found so far is to power down both the scanner and the computer, then start up the scanner, then start up the computer. Starting the computer before the scanner causes the problem to reappear -- as does interrupting a scan. So I'd like to be able to do the same kind of reset ot the parallel port that happens when the computer starts up. Is there a way to do that under SuSE Linux 8.0? Paul

Fonts

Fellow SuSEans, I've recently installed 8.0, and consider it more "substantial" than 7.3 (I refuse to use the term "robust", it sounds nauseatingly like I've been reviewing ads for Windows 2000) which it is, of course. While I'd made important hardware changes here prior to installing 8.0, moving among other things from a Matrox Millenium G450 to a G550, I've noticed disconcerting ways in which the default fonts are being rendered in 8.0. There is, for example, a certain inequality of boldness to the letters, some appearing noticeably darker than others. I do not recall a similar disparity with 7.3, which brings me to this question: Are the default fonts the same in both versions or are they not? If they differ, how might I know how they are so without having to go through an installation of 7.3 on a second machine? John Lowell

Chris Roberts, Bryan Tyson and Jostein Berntsen, I very much appreciate your responses to my question about fonts. I'd been about 75% certain that the fundamental difficulty here had to do with font selection and Jostein's reply would tend to confirm that. Frankly, I hate to have to fiddle with something like this, but I doubt if I'd ever feel entirely comfortable with 8.0 unless I do. It's almost as though I have the time, though. :-) Again, thanks to you all. John Lowell
