AudioCD in Konqi

Dear List, I have Audio CDs, I put them in the CDROM drive and browse them in the Audio CD Browser of Konqi. Very cool! But some CDs information from the freedb.org doesn't appear; Konqi just shows "Thack1.wav" etc. Now I know the db has this CDs info; It shows up on KsCD right away. How does a user 'tell' Konqi to get the data for a new audioCD? Thanks! .....PeterrB

Kernel Compilation for Dual Xeon system

I am about to compile an optimized Kernel for my new servers. I'm used to compiling kernels but not for this specification of machine - these servers are all Dual P4-Xeon 2.2GHz (512Kb cache) using Intel E7500 (Plumas) chipsets, ECC DDR RAM.. - which processor type to select - I assume Pentium-4 since no Xeon option. - how much High Memory Support - some of these servers have 2GB, some 1GB RAM. I don't foresee expanding the RAM beyond 4GB in the future. - what to set for User address space size - why? Finally. Some of these servers will be high-throughput number crunchers and I have been advised by the software vendor to switch off hyper-threading in the BIOS (which I have done) as their tests indicate it degrades compute intensive tasks. But one server will be a general purpose machine and from Intel's pages it sounds like hyper-threading would be good for this. Anyone have experience with this? Are there any Linux specific optimizations? TIA -- Simon Oliver

ARTS - CPU overload error

Hey all, Recently artsd has been shutting off with the error "CPU overload". It doesn't seem to matter what I'm running. It'll do this at random times even if no sound is being processed. I've even tried logging into KDE3 and not starting up any extra programs, just KDE with a few applets (none sound related). The CPU Overload error/shutdown of artsd occurs very randomly... sometimes within a minute of starting KDE, sometimes up to two hours before it occurs. I also have KDE set up so no sounds play except when KDE starts up or is shut down. Even shut off the system bell for the Konsole. I can see when it's going to happen because the CPU monitor applet suddenly shows heavy CPU usage. I've used kpm to see what's running and I see nothing that would be making Arts do this. But artsd itself will show heavy system usage when this occurs just before it shuts down. I'm using the latest KDE3 RPMs taken from the SuSE server, which includes arts-1.0.1-13.rpm . (Using SuSE 7.3 Pro) To make matters worse, if I "artsd start" after this happens, it'll start fine, but all sounds are choppy when I do this so it's useless. And eventually at some random point it will do a CPU overload again. But leaving KDE and logging in again will restart arts without the choppy-sound problem. 1) Is this an arts issue, an issue with this particular RPM, or what? Where do I start to look in determining the problem? I'm almost certain this didn't start happening until I installed the latest build of that particular RPM, but I can't say that for certain. 2) Seems odd that starting KDE (and thus it starts artsd) doesn't cause choppy sounds, but if I do "artsd start" it gets choppy. This happens even if I "artsd stop" then start it again, not just after a CPU overload issue. Does KDE set some specific options for artsd when it starts arts itself that I should be doing as well? LVM and the Mantel Kernel

I have test machine in the lab that I want to experiment with the latest Mantel kernel on. ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/next Before upgrading the kernel, I had a second disk drive that was setup as a LVM volume. It is no longer being recognized as an LVM volume. The machine boots and runs fine, I just can't access the data I had on that drive. Could someone point me to the appropriate readme / howto that tells me how I should have done this upgrade to maintain access to the LVM volume. To be honest, there is not any data of value out on the LVM volume, so I guess I could just recreate it now, but I would like to better understand the upgrade process. Anyway, I remember reading that hyper-threading is still buggy in the Linux kernel. (Maybe it is only buggy in the ia64 architecture.) Regardless, I would not enable it unless you want to spend some time at kernel.org making sure that you know what your doing. For lurkers: Hyperthreading is the ability to run multiple instructions inside a single cpu at the same time. Sort of like having multiple CPUs. Rocks Try using the LILO option mem=512M at the LILO prompt from the install CD, I have found that certainly on Proliant 2500's it fails to correctly ascertain the correct size and assumes you have only 16MB of RAM, I did get it to install but it was painful and took all day!!. With the correct memory size it runs quite well and found the Smart Array Controller. You should first of all configure the array from the SmartStart CD, and then install the Compaq diagnostics partition, this is optional, but recommended. Hope that helps. David Bottrill
