If you you don't intend to used GNOME 2, be careful that you don't update gnome-vfs from the supplemental directory because you will lose all the GNOME 1.x mime types. You mime types will be magically restored once you upgrade to GNOME 2. Depending on which GNOME you wish to use as default, you may need to tweak a few environment variables. Here's mine: GNOMEDIR=/opt/gnome GNOME_PATH=/opt/gnome:/opt/gnome2:/usr Also, the following should exist in your /etc/ld.so.conf: /opt/gnome/lib /opt/gnome2/lib Plus, /opt/gnome/bin:/opt/gnome2/bin should be in your PATH. There's probably more to it, but that's all I can think of off hand. Have to stop and start rcalsasound to play CD

Each time I start up my system, in order to use XMMS, I have to do a rcalsasound stop and racalsasound start to use it. What did I screw up this time? Harry G

Qt3 Designer in SuSE 8.0: no KDE widgets ?

In the old Qt Designer (development tool to design dialog boxes) you could choose between Qt widgets and KDE widgets. With the latests SuSE 8.0 packages for Qt3 and KDE3 the Qt Designer only shows Qt widgets, i.e. you can't use it to design real KDE dialog boxes. If I remember correctly Qt Designer has some compile options to include KDE widgets or not. Is this correct and if so, what is this option so I can recompile Designer myself. Also, I experience quite a lot of Kdevelop 2.1 crashes, Qt Designer itself seg faults on startup if a ~/.qt/qtrc file exists, the .ui extension is not mapped by default to Qt Designer, ... I really have the feeling SuSE dropped the ball with this one. Anyone else with the same experiences? Am I right or wrong?

IDE DMA

Hi all, I just upgrade my Pentium III to Pentium 4, and now my HD & DVD IDE-DMA can't be on. When I click Finish on Yast2, it said: Device /dev/hda: Cannot set to value 1 My old Mobo: Asus CUSL2. (i815) My new mobo: Intel D845GBV (i845G) My HD: IBM 30GB 7200rpm My DVD: Sony 16x. Why can't I enable the DMA on my new mobo. Is there anyway I can enable it? HELP---HELP---HELP TIA

ACPI patch on SuSE 8.0 Pro

Hi all, i've been trying to apply the latest ACPI patch (acpi-20020611-2.4.18.diff.gz) from <URL:http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=36832&release_id=…> without success. I downloaded the patch, cd /usr/src/linux-2.4.18.SuSE and patch -p1 < acpi.... Patch applies OK to the /usr/src/linux source tree, but I cannot produce a workable system as this does not recompile (fails at make modules). Patch fails to apply to the /usr/src/linux-2.4.18.SuSE tree, although before applying the patch I can built a workable (i.e. bootable) kernel with this tree. I am a newbie at kernel recompilations so I really can't figure things out by myself:-(. Does anyone know if I can apply (succesfully) the ACPI patch to the SuSE source? Are there things I overlooked? Thank you for your time. -Stathis.

reiser bad magic number problem

I am getting the following error when trying to use dump: DUMP: Dumping /dev/hda2 (/) to /dev/nst0 /dev/hda2: Bad magic number in super-block while opening filesystem fsck reports the following: tarmac:/sbin # fsck -a /dev/hda2 fsck 1.26 (3-Feb-2002) Reiserfs super block in block 16 on 0x302 of format 3.6 with standard journal Blocks (total/free): 1895670/1693062 by 4096 bytes Filesystem is NOT cleanly umounted The system has been cleanly shut down, contrary to what is being reported. I have tried running e2fsck on the disk but it reports the same error. I have tried giving e2fsck different master block numbers to use but it doesn't fix the problem. When I partitioned the disk I manually deleted the previous table then created a swap and linux partition. I accepted the default reiser choice for the file system type. I am begining to think nothing short of a reinstall is going to fix this problem. If that is the case, should I use an ext2 partition for the boot partition and reiser for the other partitions? Logging to remote syslog daemon

I have a question about syslogd on SuSE Linux 7.1 (i386). I am running syslogd with -r so it is listening for other machines sending syslog messages. in the syslog.conf file I have a line that reads "*.* @sysloghost". I am trying to do the following logging: firewall -> proxy -> server at the moment firewall -> proxy logging works fine, so the firewall logs to /var/log/messages on the proxy fine, and local proxy messages -> server (another machine) also works fine, but any messages from the firewall are *not* forwarded to this other server. the following is from the man pages for syslog.conf: Remote Machine This syslogd(8) provides full remote logging, i.e. is able to send messages to a remote host running syslogd(8) and to receive messages from remote hosts. The remote host won't forward the message again, it will just log them locally. To forward messages to another host, prepend the hostname with the at sign (``@''). Using this feature you're able to control all syslog mes- sages on one host, if all other machines will log remotely to that. This tears down administration needs. which I guess means it isn't going to happen. is there any way around this? kind regards, Simon
