I do understand your opinion, and I don't want so sound condescending, but it's common amongs MS educated people. They don't have an unbiased education. It is, if you trace it back, originating from MS. Let's take it to the extreme. F.ex. you get a computer to defend your family and country in war. The manufacturer says it's certified and you can totally trust us to be on top of your computer. MS promoted NT 4 to be C2 certified (that's a government security level) but what they did not (openly) say was that it was only C2 as long as you did not plug it into a network. That's pretty big misrepresentation. You may not be at war but it's a poor excuse not to be forthright about the truth. You are betting your business, livelyhood and possibly even employees livelyhood on it being true. (When I do something for a company, like implementing security policies, I don't think of how I can make more money on them. I have one thing in mind, do a good job! The best kind of job security, pun not intended.) This has been going on with MS since pretty early on. Indeed their way of operating show little care for things like the law or common good. (Please don't say that's what companies does because that does not make it any more right.) So we all have a way of doing things, it is in fact a Way of Life. Like it being wrong for a gypsie not to steal when there's an opportunity. Over and over MS violate our rights in various covert ways. Know they cannot be trusted to to have done something when they claim to have done so. You now end up with a number of very skilled people testing windows releases, patches and so on, to see if it's working as advertized. (Talk about bad reputation!) After having been following MS since it was founded, and used most of their products, patches and what not's, I can truly say they deserve their reputation, maybe not in every aspect, but in general. Take stability. Windows can be run stably for 365 days without crashing. IF, you know exactly how to configure it. Which clearly cannot be that easy judging by the volume of unhappy admins. The thing is you are only supposed to run ONE application on each server. "Glass house" if you are familiar with the term. Meaning Do Not Touch Once It's Working! Why is that? Well to earn a windows certification a program only have to be able to work by itself on a computer, not co-exisist. Why is that?? Because the foundation of the design is flawed! It is like a deck of cards. Look at any *nix. It has a sound design foundation. It was not even designed to be secure. Only to easily forward communication any which way. True to form, you CAN quite readily secure a *nix box because of sound design. In the famous Halloween Paper (internal MS memo that leaked on Haloween a few years ago) the programmer said he could not help himself from writing a couple of drivers for Linux (while investigating it on their behalf) because it was so easy. What does that tell you? Now enter Linux left stage. It has the source code available for everyone to inspect. Flaws are being found and fixed readily and willingly. Often overnight. MS has a hell of a time to fix anything. It's project managers don't even know what all the code is for in applications. At one point Word had over 2MB of code it did not dare to remove because they did not know what it did. What kind of project management is that?!? SLOPPY, SLOPPY SLOPPY!!! No excuse in the world can excuse that kind of a thing. So w2k might be pretty, it is a number of things, including better than it's predecessors. But am I willing to spend all the time and money it needs to operate nicely and safely in each of their more expensive boxes? Nope. You see, I grew up before windows entered center stage. I had higher standards that set the tone for how computers can work. Later people (flamebait) got lazy and current admins were fooled out of a proper education. (I'd ask for a refund.) When I see what the Linux community is accomplishing (a bunch of programmers from all over the planet) without the coordination and money you'd think is possible at MS. Got them running scared. I cannot but smile at the irony. Linux is a grassroot movement because it is what people want. Not because of lazy attitudes or advertising or whatever. When it's all said and done, it has deliverd at a much higher level than any windows has done. . SuSE Star Office dist question

Years ago when Star Office 6 first became available I seem to remember reading a review extolling the documentation and extras which came along with Sun's offering. I'm curious, now that every Tom, Dick and SuSE is selling Star Office6, what incentive is there to plunk down an extra $50.00 for Suns version. Specifically is the printed documentation a Sun exclusive? or does it come along w/ SuSE's offreing as well? Thanks -- dh

Dan, Go to Control panel and use Yast Online Update ( YOU ) to update your KDE; SuSE has teken all the fuss out of updating <Thanks SuSE Guys> . GPM and IntelliMouse?

GPM (console mouse program) is not working properly under my SuSE 8.0 installation. When I move the mouse to the top of the screen, it copies and pastes continuously. This is with an IntelliMouse. The middle button and wheel work fine in Xwindows. Any ideas what's wrong? Peter Taylor

Problem of smbclient

I have a problem with the smbclient on my SuSE 7.1. Each time I connect to a windows 2000 share using smbclient 2.0.10-0, I cannot get or put files smb: \pk\> get tmp.txt getting file tmp.txt of size 46461 as tmp.txt Short read when getting file \pk\tmp.txt. Only got 0 bytes. (0 kb/s) (average 0 kb/s) (smbclient then crashes) smb: \pk\> put rss-41.txt putting file rss-41.txt as \pk\rss-41.txt Error writing file: code 0 (0 kb/s) (average 0 kb/s) (smbclient then crashes) The OS on the windows machine is Windows 2000 Professional with NTFS file system. I have full permission on the shared directory. Any suggestions? Kang Peng

Wizzards and wunderkinde and anyone else w/ some real knowledge , short setup: Still having some problems w/ the Plywel "purose built" computer .. which began life running NT4 ( bleah!) and recently , because of some really odd behaviour, they had me send the box back for a retrofit .. well a rebuild , really .. replaced Mboard, scsi card athlon chip, ram and, even the power supply, they also replaced ( twice!) the hard drive .... and , because The bigger Bosses present , they understood it wasn't NT but Linux it was going to be used for. Sometimes it does help to rant a bit .... Anyway , they send it back adn it still wont boot, so it maeks anotehr trip to the left coast and this time, they make certai it will boot by loading linux on it !! ( small moral victories help moralle <G>) The a few weeks later, the floppy drive lost it's tiny mind... couldn't open it, couldn't even tell if there were a disk in it! Sooooo, we call and complain.. and they decide to ship a drive here to have one of their local guys install once it arrives.. it gets here, dn the installer does his thing ... teh computer being off all this time... he leaves, Gil ( spouse) decides to check to see if the thing actually works, he boots the box, and suddenly ... problems ..... the desktop took more thn 15 minutes too hsow up, and when it did , nothing worked as it had before. He'd noted that the xconsole message kept repeating that there were errors that he hadn't seen before... back to the Polywell folks. They had a guy "walk him thru the connections of all the drives etc.. and decided that most likely Linux was at fault, esp as it doesn't have a "Go BAck" feature !!! ( okay, stoi laughing now <G>) one of the things that turns up in the dmesg that bothers ME is: I/O error: dev 08:03, sector 390272 vs-13070: reiserfs_read_inode2: i/o failure occurred trying to find stat data of [84619 84627 0x0 SD] scsi0: ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: 0x28 00 00 1a ca 95 00 00 08 00 Info fld=0x1aca97, Current sd08:03: sns = f0 3 ASC=11 ASCQ= 0 That's all new stuff since the floppy drive replacement.. and it repeats ad infinitem : can anyone provide me w/ a translation ?? what do I need to do to fixor it? OR is it one of those things I can safely ignore? ANd if I can ig that... how do I fixor my long loading slooooooow building desktop? w/o reinstall , which seems to be a rediculious suggestion , esp when they suggest I load XP !! I know there are a number of strange "statements" in the dmesg that are arcane stuff left over fro various programmers ... apparently... ( I don't speak program so I've no clue <G> ) Feel free anyone to send a private message to me and I'll send you the entire file .. tho why you'd want 9 pages of repeated data I don't know.... We aim to please tho.. <smile> j afterthought Age is a very high price to pay for maturity.

Replacing Wine with Codeweavers CrossOver Office

I installed Wine on my SuSE 8 system but now want to use CrossOver Office which I have downloaded. Question: Do I need to un-install Wine and if so how, before I install CrossOver Office? Oh no... not again. Let's make some rules before we continue this thread: NO FLAME WAR PLEASE!!! For some reason every time there is a discussion about Gnome/KDE is ends in a flame war.... :-( So, here is my 'humble' opinion: I prefer KDE above GNOME. Of course my motivation is subjective, but I think KDE is a step further in evolution than GNOME. First of all, as a software engineer, I like the Qt concept very much. The GTK(+) is nice, but Qt is probably the most advanced (GUI) toolkit at the moment. And it's C++. And personally I think C++ is extremely useful when programming a windows enviroment. The KDE libraries on top of Qt makes sure that KDE applications have a unified interface, for example have a look at the 'file open' boxes. In Gnome this is somewhat primitive. KDE is more stable than GNOME. KDE has a great development environment (KDevelop). Although KOffice isn't finished yet, it is much more an office suite than GNOME office. There are more reasons, but my choice is basically made on the technical architecture. The biggest 'no' against KDE was the Qt licensing scheme. This is now fixed, but there are still folks who thinks that the Qt licensing scheme sucks. But again, I only look at the technical side of KDE....
