Well, I finally got an IP out of DHCP, although I'm not entirely sure why. After re-configuring the network card to obtain an IP via DHCP, I did the following: # rcnetwork stop # ifconfig eth0 up # rcnetwork -n # rcnetwork start (DHCP "failed") # rcnetwork -n # rcnetwork restart (DHCP succeeded) I then rebooted the machine and DHCP succeeded....:) I may still play around w/ Ethereal to see if I can find out what was going on. Somehow, I was able to edit a config file somewhere, and extend the grace period, so it's been working fine for a few months now. Today, I was playing with my latest toy, a D-Link CF WiFI card. I ended up switching from the 'kernel' PCMCIA support to the 'external' one, and I got a driver to load, but the fast-timeout problem reappeared! Issueing `dhcpcd -n` causes it to wake up and retry immediately, and at least today, I was able to complete the negotiation on the second or third try. OpenOffice 1.0 vs. StarOffice 6.0 (WRT: converters)

Last spring I installed OpenOffice 1.0, and while I liked it better than StarOffice 5.2, I found that it did not save documents in MS Word or PoerPoint format properly. More specifically, I teach courses at a local university and I post my lecture notes online in Power Point format. So, having retained 5.2, I used OpenOffice to create my slides then used StarOffice 5.2 to save them as Power Point documents. I also found that some other text documents I have had the same problem. I think that the one spread sheet I tried was saved properly in excel format. Greetings, I am trying to find documentation, or any information concerning 'harden_suse'. I'm using SuSE 8.0 with a broadband connection and I would like to make my PC more secure without shutting down http/ftp/smtp etc. I have SuSE Firewall running, but obviously I have a lot more to read and do. I also am concerned that my setup is not presently configured correctly in some aspects, hardware and installed programs. Is there documentation or a website that gives some good guidance for SuSE users to configure their setup? Any pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated, even if it is simply to a website or a page in 'the manual'. Best regards, Ron Boyer

adabas database

I have star offic 6 installed on my win xp an also on suse 8 machines. i'm wondering if anyone has been able to figure oout how to use the adabas database program yet. I'm interested in checking it out, know its a limited version with file size if i read the info on it right. There is nuthing in the book that came with the version i have from sun. i bought the full version when it 1st came out an it has a book but does not cover the database program at all. thanks for info jack malone

Sound in Enlightenment but not console

I have an HP 800CT that has sound in Enlightenment but not at the console - all I get is clicks. If I reload ESD it's loud, what can I do to test/fix this?
