Using cygwin/Xfree-86 to access Suse

Guys, Someone recently suggested XFree-86 under Cygwin is the best way to access the SuSE GUI. I've installed it and I can: startxwin.sh xhost + ssh SuSE-box DISPLAY=... xeyes and it works. What I prefer to do, is run the whole KDE desktop via XFree-86, but I forgotten the command. I thought it was "XWin -query server_name", but that is not working. Can someone give me that again? OK. So, k_* are the kernels already compiled and kernel_source is the source code for in-house compilation, right? My machine is dual PII so I whil try k_smp* first. Anyone know of a CD-RW that plugs into a USB2 port and is supported by Suse? I desperately need to start backing up my stuff. I'm still a newbie. Eric

Printing problems

I am thoroughly disgusted with this situation. I have an 8.0 system. It runs fine, if a bit slower than previous versions. The one thing that is making me crazy is printing. I had different printing problems with 7.3 too, 7.1 was fine. I have an HP IIP laser, it prints perfectly under Win98. Under linux I am using lprng sosftware. The problem is it USUALLY prints too close to the top of the paper so the top line is cut in half. I have gone through everything I can think of to correct or modify the system to no avail. No my software is NOT set to A4 it is set to letter. I even went into the lpdfilter and hard modified it so wherever it referred to a paper size it would come up letter. This really is ridiculous. Under previous versions of Suse there was a program for Tex called texconfig that had a section that allowed you to move the area of printing around until it was symmetrical (they have taken that out, as far as I could tell, when they changed texconfig), THAT is what it seems like I need. I have checked the manual for the printer and there is no way to make margin settings THERE. Printing is IMPORTANT. There HAS to be a solution for this so I am willing to do whatever. Please don't say that CUPS is the answer, if it was that good Suse would have made it the default and they didn't. I tried CUPS on 7.3 and it was just as bad, I also tried the commercial package, whose name I forget, ESP maybe? I sure could use a hand here. I have RTFM and wouldn't be asking if I had found an answer. Scott

Linux & Y2K

BlankDear All Linuxer, I've learned about Linux just about three weeks ago. So I'm trully a newbie for linux. I decided to use Suse, because the installation is simple. So, my computer is 486 clas, AMD processor (5x86 133Mhz), 64Mb Memory. After installation, Suse detect the hardware correctly, except this: Suse failed to detect the correct Years, it said 2099 or sometimes said 1996. So, I have to correct this problem manually, when KDE appears, by changing the date-bar. This is Y2K compliance. When I used MS-Windows, I put dos command in the autoxec.bat file (setyear 2002), that access to the Y2K Dos program. My question: is there any program or application on Linux that could fix my Y2K problem? Suse 8.0 support all processor since intel386, and minimum requirements for this suse 8.0 is 486 processor. [OT] Atari disks on Linux

Does anyone have any idea how to read/write atari disks on Linux? I bought an Atari Mega ST2 without software, and I'm trying to create disks for it. It seems to use 720k floppies with a modified DOS format. I can format a 1.44MB disk on the atari as 720k, but it's useless on Linux. as a opera user i have to say i am mighty impress with netscape version 6.2... i mean it rocks and in areas where opera fails netscape picks up.... :-)

Error message with KDE 2.2.1 trash (Help).

I have had a copy of source that I was trying to compile (see: PDF files won't open.) that I was trying to dish in my trash because I keept getting an error message: Access denied to /KDesktop/Trash/gimp-print-4.3.0/lib/.deps/vasprintf.Plo I did an rm -r /home/brian/KDesktop/Trash/ to get rid of the junk in my Trash and my trash directory disapeared from the desktop. I created a new trash directory but things are going haywire. The trash doesn't seem to work properly and I ended up with a Trash.directory file on my Desktop. What do I do to get things working correctly again? I am using SuSE 7.3 Pro and KDE 2.2.1. Cheers, Brian
