Thanks to all who responded. I have played w/ various mixers some, but I don't remember the "Wave Sur" setting. You're right - there are so many settings that I don't have a clue about! :) I'll check it out tonight though. BTW - I got the file w/ your first reply...?? I had a lot of problems with this myself, but finally got it working with alsa-0.9.x. One of the problems is a lot of the volumes are muted by default. Other are so low you cannot hear them. If you bring up alsamixer you will see a pantload of settings. Use the right arrow to move across until you see the setting "Wave Sur". I found this setting adjusts the volume of the rear speakers. If it is muted then unmute it with I think "m". And use the up/down arrows to adjust the volume. If things still are not working, then all I can suggest is to try my /etc/asound.state file. Backup yours and replace it with this one, and see if that at least gets it going. Make sure you are using alsa-0.9.x series as things have changed a lot from alsa-0.5.x. Try this to verify the version: > cat /proc/asound/version Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 0.9.0beta10. Telenet by root

In Yast1 it was possible to change telnet so that root could logon via telnet. This was in System Security. Have not found that in Yast2. Can anyone please point me in the right direction? Overall am very pleased with 8.0. Even navigation in Yast2 is ok.. Its different but only takes a while to get used to it. Different isn't always bad! Thanks, Robert

Konq & Launching Progs as Root

It has always been my practice to run as a user, and to invoke Konq & Konsole in superuser mode when I need them thus. But with Suse8 I can no longer (as a user) launch X-based programs from these windows. Logged in as root I can, but not when as a user and launching from these programs. For instance in Konq I cannot right-click|OpenWith|Advanced Editor a file: "KDEInit could not launch 'kwrite'". And from the su konsole # konqueror and I get: Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified konqueror: cannot connect to X server :0 In user konsole $ kdesu konqueror yields nothing. This looks alot like a security issue. Maybe the X server is intentionally disabled from accepting root commands from a user. Or maybe it's one missing setup step. How about going from 7.2-7.3 then to suse 8? the key here is a successful migration without loss of data or system configuration. Building a routing table

Hi guys... I am trying to create a router in a situation pretty strange. Let'see. I have got an internal network, baptized under the IP range 192.168.37.0/24. My router, called (hardly enough) proxyRouter, is connected via a Realtek NIC whose ip is 192.168.27.200 (out of the standards, i know, but this is what they asked me for). Then i have got a second NIC, from DLink, whose ip address is 192.168.38.2, connected to a firewall. Then a third NIC is connected, a 3com, that is connected to a second private network, whose is baptized under the ip range 130.130.38.0/24 (it is a private network that doesn't have to access to the Internet) via a radio bridge. I have set up the routing between the first and the second nic, having denied the access from the internet to the second network, i have set up "IP_FORWARDING" to "yes", and i have set up the natting between those two NICs. All works well. Then i tried to link the third nic to the little game i set up. AAAGH!! It doesn't work anymore. More explicitely, i need to know how to split the traffic between the firewall and the radio bridge. I mean, how could i set up the table route??? I tried to read the manual, but i didn't find out anything ( well, maybe because my boss makes me a lousy hurry)... Can you help me? Thanx Francesca.

Netware printing broken in 8.0 Yast2

I recently upgraded from 7.3 to 8.0 Professional. Overall I am extremely pleased with 8.0. Unfortunately the Yast2 module for configuring a Novell printer is broken in 8.0. This worked perfectly in 7.3. I posted this at feedback(a)suse.de, but am hoping someone can help in the menatime. I have an HP 4100 printer connected to the parallel port of a Netware 4.1 server. From 7.3 I saved the files /etc/printcap and /etc/apsfilterrc.y2prn_HP4100.upp The relevant line from /etc/apsfilterrc.y2prn_HP4100.upp is REMOTE_PRINTER="/usr/bin/novell_print -S Woodlawn -U \"user\" -P \"password\" -q \"Q1\" -" where user is my username and password is my password. Woodlawn is the name of the server. The directories are different in 8.0 There is an /etc/printcap and then there is a directory /etc/lpdfilter/hp4100 In that directory there is a file called redirect which contains one line as below. /usr/lib/lpdfilter/redirect/samba_print //Woodlawn/"Q1" "password" -U "user" -N -P The above line is clearly wrong since it references "samba-print". In fact, if you configure a Samba printer you will get exactly the same line. I thought I could correct this problem by changing /etc/lpdfilter/4100/redirect to be like /etc/apsfilterrc.y2prn_HP4100.upp Accordingly I changed it to read /usr/lib/lpdfilter/redirect/novell_print -S Woodlawn -U \"user\" -P \"password\" -q \"Q1\" I also tried /usr/lib/lpdfilter/redirect/novell_print -S Woodlawn -U user -P password -q Q1 and /usr/lib/lpdfilter/redirect/novell_print -S "Woodlawn" -U "user" -P "password" -q "Q1" None of these work. I can print a postscript file, however, by using the following from the command line. nprint -S Woodlawn -U user -P password -q Q1 test.ps. Note that novell_print is just a script file that wraps nprint. My current procedure for printing is to save the file as a postcript file and then print it from the command line. I would prefer to print directly from the application. I notice when I try to print from Kmail that "State" says Idle (rejecting jobs) I wonder if it is a problem with KDE 3? I have never been able to configure CUPS to print to a Novell printer, so don't think using CUPS is an option, unless someone has done this. I have tried reading the docs for apsfilter, but find it a bit confusing. any idas are apreciated. Mike -- Michael A.
