I am not being disgruntled, just stating fact. I purchased 8.0 Pro which includes 90 days support. Did the same with 7.3. Either they did not support something under the installation support or it takes two weeks IF you ever get an answer. I still have an issue with Kinternet not working, no one on the list seems to know what the problem is (on two computers), have not found any information in help or website. Sent email to suse support. No answer. This was same as in 7.3. Has anyone else attempted to setup OpenTRS? I have followed the README.webserver and README.database files. Both mysql and apache are configured according to these two files. The database is setup and populated with the tables that the /usr/share/doc/packages/otrs/install/database/initial_insert.sql file contains. But when I attempt to logon to http://localhost/otrs/index.pl, I get the following error..... Can't call method "prepare" on an undefined value at /opt/OpenTRS//Kernel/System/DB.pm line 139. If I run the file /opt/OpenTRS/scripts/suse-rcotrs restart I get the following error..... Checking database connect...(DBI->connect(database=otrs;host=localhost;:otrs) failed: Access denied for user: 'otrs@localhost' (Using password: YES) at /opt/OpenTRS//Kernel/System/DB.pm line 61 Can't call method "prepare" on an undefined value at /opt/OpenTRS//Kernel/System/DB.pm line 139. (in cleanup) Can't call method "disconnect" on an undefined value at /opt/OpenTRS//Kernel/System/DB.pm line 78. ) Error!! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- May the database isn't configured yet? Try http://yourhost/otrs/installer.pl or configure your database with README.database ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If I go in and delete the database and the otrs users from mysql and try and connect to http://localhost/orts/installer.pl I get the form to create the database and otrs user accounts but when I attempt to hit apply I get the following error which makes no sense for I can easily login to mysql with the same login and password from the command prompt. CMD: mysql -u root -p mypasswordhere -h localhost -e 'create database otrs' Enter password: ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: NO) false. Now I know root@localhost is very capable of logining into mysql and creating databases and tables and users. I even installed webmin and attempted to create the database, tables and user from there with no luck. The "troubleshooting" section of the documentation is "sparse" to put it mildly. They point you to the otrs website which only has the same version of the documentation to go by.....kind of a circular reference that gets you nowhere fast. The software was installed from the SuSE 8.0 CD with the initial installation on the computers. No dependencies have been left un-resolved in yast2 and there appears to be no updates in YOU for otrs or mysql as of this afternoon. The machine was patched with YOU minutes after getting the network card setup. Any ideas? Any better documentation? Any spare home lobotomy kits for short term loan? Charles Hutchinson

8.0 - first impressions

Just some comments on my first experiences trying to install 8.0... 1st try - Dell Dimension xps200pro ppro200/128M/4G - booting from CD1 gave me an error, told me to try booting from CD2 - CD2 booted, began the install, searched for braille display, went to black screen with 'wristwatch' icon, and hung there for >45 minutes, at which time I powered down. 2nd try - AMD K62-500/256M/20G - CD1 booted successfully. The 'wristwatch' screen which hung me on the other system only lasted a minute or so, during which there was much CD and disk activity to reassure me that something ws happening. - I first selected the 'update system' option, so that it would mount and read my current config. Then I immediately hit the 'back' button, and selected 'new installation'. - I created new partitions on the disk for / and /home. - I went into 'detailed package selection' and was delighted to see that it indeed had already discovered everything I had installed in my old 7.2 system! - I browsed the list anyway, selecting a few new toys for me to play with this time around... - I immediately got a message that 'RPM returned an error' with no explanation. When I clicked OK, the installation proceeded. - During the installation phase, the time estimates quickly became overly optimistic. The progress meter on CD1 quickly went to 100%, then it continued to install about 40 more packages while I stood there waiting for the CD2 prompt to appear.... - Reboot. Asked me to remove the media. After rebooting, yast never fully painted the window, or gave any prompt, until I put CD1 back in the drive, at which time it finally asked me for CD2. - Loading of the rpms from CD2-5 was uneventful. Initial configuration: Printer: In addition to the default 300dpi, 600dpi, and greyscale queues, I set up a 'raw' queue, and discovered that yast won't conveniently set up a text-only queue. Oh, well, I've done that manually before, I can do it again. I like a simple anti-stairstep filter, without wasting resources sending text thru a2ps and ghostscript. Modem: My ISP isn't in the list, so I found nothing I could configure. It did find my modem, but it didn't give me the option to create /dev/modem and leave it at that. What's it going to do with my ISP, anyway? set up wvdial, kinternet, kppp? Which? All? Video: I declared my monitor, and tried several denser resolution settings, finally deciding on 1280x960x24bpp. - Proceed. It saves my configs, starts X, and up comes a KDM panel. Where's the cursor??? I log in as root, and KDE3 starts up. I even hear the opening sounds, but still no cursor! Red background is ugly to me, and I can't figure out why the choice of christmas-tree ornaments. Then the gestalt shifts, and I see exploding bombs. Good choice to remind me that I'm logged in as root! I trust as an ordinary user I'll get something more benign... I manage to navigate a bit from the keyboard, but I'm fumbling. I play with my mouse, and discover it's working, since as I slowly move it about the desktop, I see actions indicative of the mouse hovering over buttons, icons, etc. I like the 'swelling' icons on the panel much better than OSX's too-gaudy magnification/warping effect. The mouse buttons seem to work as well. At this point, I get frustrated enough to turn to the laptop to write this report. I don't feel like continuing to feel about in the dark, trying to continue my configuration. I vaguely remember somebody reporting a similar 'hidden cursor' effect back with 7.2 or 7.3, so I'll go searching the archives.... Anybody have the fix for this closer to the top of the stack? SuSE Linux 8.0 on Toshiba Satellite 2100 CDS Notebook PC

Having had a very pleasant surprise at the ease with which SuSE 8.0 installed onto my latest PC tower (Pentium III 1000 Mhz + etc etc.) I thought that getting it setup on my older Toshiba Notebook would be just as easy, but soon found that I was mistaken! In short these were the problems more or less in sequence: 1 - Installation freeze up at 'partition' check 2 - Installation freeze up at 'Starting kernel PCMCIA' 3 - Video card driver S3ViRGE detected did not work, hence no X-Server 4 - Modem not detected (Winmodem) Bypassed 1 by 'ide=nodma' on Linux command line Bypassed 2 by 'PCMCIAYES=no' on Linux command line Fixed 3 by changing to SVGA driver and adjusting Hsync and VRefresh Fixed 4 by downoading ltmodem rpm from listed URL and configuring I later discovered that I could get rid of 'PCMCIAYES=no' on the command line by changing one variable in /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia, namely PCMCIA_SYSTEM. By default it was = "kernel" and changing to "external" worked. However my Sitecom Fast Ethernet PCCARD is still inop, with a cryptic message I dont understand after the following line: Intel ISA/PCI/CardBus PCIC probe PCI: No IRQ known for interrupt Pin A of device 00:13:0 Please try using pci =biosirq PCI: No IRQ known for interrupt Pin B of device 00:13:1 Please try using pci =biosirq I referred this to support(a)suse.de who promised to reply shortly, but in the meantime am referring it to the Panel hoping this might help someone else and me at the same time. Any clue why <ide=nodma> is needed for this Notebook? and in which script does <pci=biosirq> belong? and although the Winmodem works it does not make any sound, in spite of configuring kppp Modem setting <volume slider> to max. Frankly am also a bit confused trying to figure out how configuring wvdial kppp and kinternet each in its own way does not cause conflicts! kinternet seems to be very nice as you can select <Interface=ppp0> with more than one <Provider> but modifying this kinternet context-menu is also a puzzle e.g. how do you edit <name> in the <Provider="name"> menu item? Greetings from a SuSE fan (tried RedHat, Caldera , Corel, etc but keep coming back to SuSE)

portmap used by inetd?

Hi all! I am using the runlevel editor in Suse 8.0. I was disabling unneeded services so I tried to disable portmap as I always did before. THis time yast2 comes up and shouts that portmap is necessary to inetd? Is it true? Why now it is needed and before it was not? Is it a bug? TIA, Praise

big hard drive, drive overlays and Linux

OK, I have been poking about on the web for some guidance on this. This is the scenario: I have a 386sx25 with 16MB RAM that I am installing Slackware on (I know, not SuSE, but I have tried without success all versions from 6.4 through 8.0. Slackware 8.0 includes option to install on 386 systems, and worked first try.) Anyway, the 500MB HD I currently have in the system is the limit of the BIOS. I have a 1.2Gig Quantum I want to install to give me a larger sandbox to play in. The problem is... how do I get around the BIOS issues? Do I need to? Back in the DOS days I would download OnTrack and use that to do the BIOS redirects to give me access to a drive larger than what the BIOS understands. In my research on this, so far, I have only turned up a lot of nothing. RedHat has some info on this in their FAQ that basically says don't ask them for help, install on a different drive. http://www.redhat.com/support/sla/SLAdescriptions.html#nooverlay I found this reference http://www.linuxhq.com/kernel/v2.0/doc/ide.txt.html and in the new features is mentions Dynamic Disk Overlays... not much info about the how, what, where though. Is it possible that since (as I understand it) Linux directly access the HD, the drive overlay thing is not an issue? (vs. the Windows -> BIOS -> HD way)??? C.

Christopher, I repeat, there are NO duties or tariffs on shipments of software (or hardware for that matter!) to Canada from the US or in the opposite direction. I bet you haven't even set a Canadian dollar 'store' price - which is something I save you by paying you in US greenbacks. The 7% GST (sales tax) is exigible on all sales in Canada. Someone is losing the point here. I want to buy the SuSE product from SuSE. SuSE accepted the order. SuSE backordered the order. Yet SuSE is shipping the product to the world and now to Future Shop. I would suggest that either someone move a pencil and get the product on its way OR have the store post the fact that they will not sell their product to Canadian developers or end-users. In that case, the situation is resolved and I will order in a Caldera distribution which - from my experience with Unix, they will have at my doorstep by the end of this week. This just is not worth the hassle. fetchnews

I've been scratching my head over this for awhile, tried the miniHowto, readme.suse, faq, etc. but still am having problems. I've had leafnode set up in the past and was able to run fetchnews (as root) without a problem. Currently if I just type "fetchnews" (as root) the prog goes to my newsserver and gets the grouplist but no articles. When I type "fetchnews -f" it gets the grouplist and articles as it should. It just bothers me that I need to add this flag now when it wasn't necessary in the past. I'm using suse 7.2pro, and the version of leafnode that came w/ the dist. Another question also came up when I tried to setup the latest version of leafnode. I did ./configure, make, make install. When I ran the program It told me that "localhost" was not good enough, I need a "fully qualified domain name in /etc/hosts". How do I do this for a dialup connection with server assigned address? For the time being I went back to the SuSE version of leafnode which doesn't have this requirement. -- dh

It's because some one it's selling me an used version but doesn't know which version the software is... So I was curious about how many commercial versions of SuSE Firewall has been made ?
