kde 3 ??

Someone mentioned that kde3 final suse rpms are available .. where ?? I checked the logical places (ftp.kde.org, ftp.suse.com, 2 local mirrors) and found nothing .. was this someone 3 days early ? Or did I look in the wrong spot ? What you are advocating is conceding to windows in the areas where it leads today. I'm hoping linux will be a total solution tomorrow. Remember Microsoft's suit against kde a couple years ago? Because when you moved the mouse over the K button on the Kpanel, a tooltip popped up that said, "Where do you want to go tomorrow?" Microsoft claimed this was an infringement on their slogan, "Where do you want to go today?" KDE was forced to remove the tooltip in settlement, but the point is not lost on the community. Linux as a total solution is where we want to go tomorrow. Crossover is just a step in the right direction. John

KDE and GNOME irritating problems

Hi all, 1. On Gnome, typing in the "m" character into any part of the control center brings up a menu :) How do I fix that? e.g. I can't type in "xmms" for a mime type helper. 2. On KDE, many Windows, panels, menus have irritating colored stripes on them. I don't think this is a theme :) Some of them go away if I resize the window. rsh host vs rsh host command

This is puzzling me if I do: rsh host I can login without a password prompt or anything. If I do echo host echo yes nothing happens for a while (30 seconds ?) and then I get host: connection refused Doing exactly the same thing onto a Sun machine works just fine Any idea where I need to look ? I did check /etc/pam.conf (and verified them against a set of linux machines where rsh otherlinuxbox echo yes indeed echoes yes) and that works just fine. The problem with DCOP server is caused by missing entries in the startkde file. Below is a patch that should fix your startkde file to make KDE3 work again. Good luck. A Faster System

Hi; I have a choice of hard disk setup options. Which one is faster for linux? 1. Use Two hard drives at ATA66, in which I place the swap partition and VAR partition on the other disk, so linux will access both disks at the same time. (ie. opening a program and writing a log). 2. Use one disk at ATA100. (only one disk due to the IDE cable not being long enough - I have a full tower and some of the drive bays are quite away from the motherboard) If 2. then will SuSE 7.2 support the Promise Ultra ATA100 controller on the Asus A7V motherboard? kernel panic

My 71pro system locked yesterday and a cold reboot was implemented. When the reboot started it goes to a certain point and then does a kernel panic with a message like: kernel panic: no init found. try passing init= option to kernel. Anyone know what could be wrong? I've tried fsck'ing the partitions and they come up clean.

Hi guys, Maybe this is not the place for this... but I hope somebody can help. Suppose I have a Perl script that will (basically) do something like this (from cron): $output=`lynx -dump http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2002-Mar/`; $send_it=`mail me\(a)here.com<$output`; OK, here comes the problem. What if list.suse.com is down? lynx will keep trying for a while until it gives up or something. Is it possible to impose a time limit, like: execute $output, wait for 45 seconds, if there was no response (lynx did not dump), exit(0); cheers, A PS. MySQL

All, I have MySQL installed and working perfectly on my SuSE 7.2 system. Now, I would like to build a new version of MySQL and run two database servers on the same physical machine. If I do the standard (make && make install, etc), will it make changes to the current installation? If yes, what can I do to make them co-exist separately?? Any help will be greatly appreciated!! syslog function

I'm trying to get a pm3 to give me more info and it uses a syslog function to do this. this info is stored on a suse machine. How do i get the suse machine to except this info. The pm3 now stores it's info via radius to the suse machine. Suse doesn't actually have a syslog log file well at least on my machine. any ideas? KDE3/SuSE

I've installed the Adrian rpms for KDE3 and can't get it to work. I'm having a DCOPserver error which, in general, the message states that it can't find and/or make a network connection with ".DCOPserver-xxxxxx__0". I've deleted DCOP files in user dir as well in /tmp. I've also renamed ALL .kde dirs in user dir. I would LOVE to evaluate the latest KDE3 release and would appreciate any suggestions! I must say that Star Office does a terrible job at importing M$ Excel documents as well. A document created on Microsoft Office was imported into my SuSE 7.3 box at work, with Star Office installed. Work was done on the Excel document and several days later it was exported again... When I sent that document to my corporate office for review, they were fit to be tied. Star Office changed the previous formats of many cells, and corrupted many others. It was a total waste of my time. The assumption is faulty that one can work on a real Excel or any other Microsoft Office document, import it to Star Office, work on it some more, and then export it again without difficulty. It just can't be done. That's why I continue to do my corporate work on a laptop with Windows 98SE, and keep my personal computer with SuSE Linux on the desk for telecomputing and playing... If and when someone can come up with a nearly 100% MS Office compatible office suite for linux, I would like to try it. Until then I am begrudgingly forced to keep the laptop with M$ products. ;-( Regards, Gary

The sound, strangely, are perfectly run in KDE. This has happen since I installed suse (7.2) -- for several times. Anybody know what cause this problem? TIA. Source rpms and suse_update_config

Sometimes it's necessary for one reason or another to install a SuSE rpm package by going back to the source and rebuilding the object RPM. It's remarkably easy. Here are the steps: 1. Get the source RPM from the SuSE online archives or your installation media. 2. Move the package foo.src.rpm to the directory /usr/src/packages/SRPMS. 3. cd to that directory and do rpm -ihv foo.src.rpm 4. cd up and across to /usr/src/packages/SPECS 5. Do rpm -bb foo.spec which will invoke a lot of whirring machinery. 6. The newly built package foo.rpm will show up in /usr/src/packages/RPMS. However, I encountered a "gotcha" pertaining to a SuSE-defined rpm macro suse_update_config. The process in step 5 may die because that macro is undefined (if that's the problem, a glance at the end of the output will make that obvious). A likely cause is that you have a file /etc/rpmrc left over from some older SuSE installation. If you do, delete it. It belongs to no package in current SuSE systems and will not be missed. That will make the definition of suse_update_config visible again. (It took me a couple of days to discover all that.) SuSE folks, please put something about suse_update_config in your support database. Paul Abrahams

only root has access to port 21?

The FTP server software I am using keeps telling me that port 21 "is in use ..." However, if I log on as ROOT and THEN run the same software, it works fine on port 21. And there are NO OTHER ftp servers running on this machine. The guy who wrote the software sent me the following 'fix': (BTW ... the server software is a java app, and the following instructions apply to Mac OS X): == Open a terminal session. Issue the following command. (Copy paste) == sudo chmod u+s /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.3.1/Commands/java == == Now when you launch CrushFTP, you have permission to launch and open a port below 1025. == == PLEASE NOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! == This will allow CrushFTP root access to your computer. It will also allow ANY == other .jar file you double click on root access. You have been warned! == That said...it works very nice like this...just like classic did. so ... how would I 'translate' this command to work in linux? I tried issuing the same command as above, but only changing the path to where java lives: sudo chmod u+s /usr/lib/jdk1.3.1/bin/java but this didn't work. Any ideas or suggestions? [OT]SuSE's Enterprize server kernel?

I'm having a go round with Dell support people about what appears to me to be a hardware problem on a 6400 server box. We have 1 slot in this box that if we put any cards in, the box will lock up. It's a 33Mhz 32/64 bit slot of which there are 4. We have 2 of our own cards in adjacent slots. We have suspected an apic problem with their bios because of a known apic/irq0 problem with their bios that there is a kernel patch for and does in fact fix. We suspect there are more bios bugs in their board/bios. They insist (as always) that the problem is not theirs. They say that we have to run an "Enterprise kernel" to get support for 4 processors. Is that a crock or what? What this "slot" problem has to do with the kernel is beyond me. Either way I was wondering if anyone knows of specific things in SuSE Enterprise kernel that could possibly help with this kind of thing. I can see that is is a 2.4.7 kernel from the info in their site. Is there anyway to get a copy of it without buying the $1000 package? Is Dell giving me a line of sh#t. We have tried MANY kernels and also even Red Hat 7.2 like Dell says they support. We are back to using SuSE 7.3 with a vanilla 2.4.18 kernel. We have tried all the SuSE kernels available. I think we have been wasting time trying all these different kernels. Sorry if this is OT. I know that there are many knowledgeable people and SuSE people watching this list and I am just looking for advise/help. Thanks in advance Mark

2.4.16-36 kernel

Did anyone install the latest available official 2.4.16 kernel? This 1 one is located in the certified directory. However, the kernel minor version is 36 (2.4.16-36), which was not recommended last time it was available (a month ago or so). Anyone experience with the kernel, is it okay to upgrade? -- Richard Bos For those without home the journey is endless
