I have a machine with 256 MB ram...... So that should not be a problem :-) I've found out that in the directory '/usr/share/splash' a link is created called 'bootsplash.*' which are linked to the correct picture. When you put in /etc/lilo.conf your vga on 771 then you get the penguin (that's a start...) but NO nice SuSE screen... Another strange thing is when you install with Yast2 there is an entry in the proc called : /proc/splash. Here you can control again the splashscreen. But when installing with Yast1 there is no such entry! Trying to print the euro symbol

Hi. Although in SuSE 7.2 I can handle the Euro symbol in text consoles and X, I've tested printing with a file built in binary containing characters 0xA4's (the Euro symbol in ISO 8859-15) and 0x80's (the Euro for Microsoft). Surprisingly, 0x80's showed the Euro symbol in the printing, but not the 0xA4's (it showed something like an 'o' with four little marks). Looking in sdb.suse.com, I only found to include a file '/etc/apsfilterrc.y2prn_lp.upp' with contents: ENCODING="ISO-8859-15" No success at all. (I had configured the printer with CUPS, which correctly found it). The printer is an Epson Stylus Color 400 (I suppose a Windows printer). Any idea to get the Euro symbol correctly printed? BTW, someone figures why Microsoft chose 0x80 for the Euro, being 0xA4 the supposed standard? TIA.

I/O error on /usr/lib/liblcms.so.1

Twice over the past few months I had problems with KDM crashing on boot-up and killing X. Once this started, there was no way out other than to re-install the liblcms rpm. (A little detective work showed that it died loading liblcms.) As I say, this happened twice, but I haven't seen the problem for quite some time. But, just a few minutes ago, When I booted my Thinkpad, I spotted a couple of error messages go by during the boot process: <2>EXT2-fs error (device ide0(3,7)): ext2_read_inode: unable to read inode block - inode=539900, block=1081356 <2>EXT2-fs error (device ide0(3,7)): ext2_read_inode: unable to read inode block - inode=850817, block=1703956 Turned out that inode 539900 is in liblcms.so.1! (inode 850817 was in the directory /usr/lib/i686.) Even so, X and KDM/KDE came up without problem. I booted the rescue system off of CD1 and did an e2fsck which reported no errors. I remembered one change I made to boot.local based on a message in this mailing list. I added: hdparm -c1 -k1 /dev/hda I removed that before rebooting and everything was back to normal. I'll see if the problem *stays* fixed, but I really won't know for quite some time since it only happened about once a month or less anyway. And I'm not even sure the problem started after that change. So, does this make sense to anyone? If the problem was with the hard disk (or its parameters as set by hdparm) how come it always showed up with the same file, even after two re-installations? I know that at least with the first re-install I removed all the KDE rpms before re-installing them so I don't think the file was at the same physical location on the hard disk each time. P.S. Hello, I have installed from the ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/mozilla/0.9.8/7.2 mozilla-0.9.8.5.i386.rpm mozilla-mail-0.9.8.5.i386.rpm Also installed: IBMJava2-JAAS IBMJava2-JAVACOMM IBMJava2-JRE 1.3-67 IBMJava2-SDK java2 These are as current as the SuSE 7.2 online update. The Mozilla browser "crashes" on some web pages. Java console crashes. FYI Konquerer is configured for Java and works fine. FYI NS4.7 on another machine with SuSe 7.2 also has some difficulty with the same web pages. What exactly has to be done to configure Mozilla with Java ? What is xpi ? Is it necessary ? Where is it ? How is it installed ? What is jre1.3.x ? Is it necessary ? Where is it ? How is it installed ? What are the other RPMs on the above mentioned suse FTP? Are they necessary ? What is their main function ? Is there a procedure somewhere that gives a checklist and end user (who knows Netscape) oriented explanation of what is needed to support Mozilla 0.9.8 on SuSE Linux? Where is it ?

Occasional Mouse Failure

I use S.u.S.E. 7.3. Sometimes, after booting up, the mouse movements are not recorded on the screen. That is, when the X screen appears shortly before ximian-gnome starts up, the cursor does not respond to the mouse movement. Nor does it respond when I am asked to put in my user name and password. I reboot, and the problem is resolved. Is there any way I can fiddle here or there to prevent this from happening? Thanks dj tuchler

Annoying Konqueror lock-ups

Hi, When I use Konqueror as a file manager, on opening certain directories it will freeze with rapidly flickering patterns where the horizontal and vertical scroll bars should go. It's a reproducible problem with certain directories, but I've not yet established a firm cause and effect relationship with what part of the directory's content is producing the effect (although I suspect it may be related to image files). I'm running Suse 7.3 on an 800MHz Athlon with an nvidia geforce 2mx. I've had the problem since installation, and it has survived upgrading from KDE 2.2.1 to 2.2.2 (and to the latest 2.2.2 builds on ftp.suse), from nvidia drivers 1251 to 2313, from kernel 2.4.10 to 2.4.16. (I'm not sure if the problem survived the change to qt2.3.2, as that slowed everything down so much that I changed straight back to 2.3.1) Has anyone else had (and solved) this problem? Cheers Mark

[SLE] Can't hear audio cd's

Hello, I recently installed 7.3 pro, and can't hear audio cd's playing. I have checked the disk permissions, the cd to soundcard audio cable is intact, the sound card is playing system sounds, the K cdplayer finds the cd and identfies the artist/song name. I have looked on the suse website for any other relevant articles and have found none.....the cd is actually a cd-rw, and is identified correctly by the OS. 3DFX Frustrating

I made the switch to SuSE7.3 Personal from Mandrake8.1 this past weekend. I've invested hours of configuring software and getting it to run in SuSE, and configuring my local network, that's ok, I knew that going in. After all this time spent the only thing that pisses me off is my 3D graphics. I use a 3DFX Voodoo 3 2000 AGP. With Mandrake8.1 out of the box I was running Quake3 and Return to Castle Wlofenstein with absolutely no configuration on my part, at over 100fps. I just don't have enough linux know how to get this working on in SuSE.Quake3 runs with Mesa, but it it slow,slow,slow. I am hoping someone will help me with this so I can be totally satisfied with SuSE. How to set up a HP 930C?

I have just reinstalled my main server system, and have grave problems installing the printer. It is a HP 930C connected to the LAN through a D-Link DP-101 printserver (plugged onto the printer itself). I remember that my first SuSE Linux 7.3 installation on this system also gave me problems in this area, but somehow I got over them. Now I have struggled for a couple of days, and that is somewhat more than I expect to use for a "simple" job as setting up a printer. The printer and the printserver work, which can be confirmed by printing from other nodes on the LAN. Furthermore, when I try setting up the printer through YaST2 the test pages - both color and text - print out just fine. When I get around to use the printer after the setup, nothing happens. I have seen a patched apsfilter package which I have installed. Otherwise I have updated the system with YOU. I have backups from the previous installation, and I have tried moving all the relevant files to their libraries, but this plan didn't work either - same result. The problem is that I don't get any output from the printer. With some settings (adjusted from YaST2) the printer takes in a sheet of paper, but then the job dies. With other settings, the job dies instantly. When I do 'lpq' right after sending a job, I get a message about the job being removed. That is, the job got removed in the same moment it got issued. What should I be looking for? I have run out of ideas. Best regards, David List

Ghost...

.has anyone ever used ghost for linuxbefore. Norton Ghost is supposed to support Linux products.ext2 filetype to be exact. So I take my hard drive of my current machine called A and put it another harddrive in it called B: then I start ghost and look for a disk to disk copy and it tells me there is not a valid source disk in the machine. What is the correct process to take a ghosted image file or to copy a hard drive, the Symantec help site is no help and I cant find it anywhere else.

Hello all I have SuSE linux 7.2 installed on a P1 233Mhz for sometimes now I have seen scan on my system last night for some reason the system stop reponding unable to log. After a reset and log as single I have manage to recover the firewall file and the message file.. now I have also remount the system with remount rw , / now I can used it again .. but I still can't figure out what happend... I used reiserfs as my filesystem now how do I ask reiserfs to fix my drive so next time I reboot I will not have to manualy set it to rw I can include a the log file from my system Please need help badly..... Further to my earlier posting. Edit etc/cups/cupsd.conf on the server SERVER Browsing options Browsing On <Location /> Order Deny,Allow Deny From None Allow From 127.0.0.1, 192.168.0.3 </Location> where 192.186.0.2 is the host with the printer. On the remote host edit etc/cups/cupsd.conf Browsing On BrowsePoll: 192.168.0.2:631 If you don't then you will probably only see the remote printer in the browser once before it disappears. Regarding StarOffice /opt/office52/prrogram/spadmin just follow the procedure in the CUPS documentation on linuxprinting.org and use the same printer name as your remote printer.

Hi! I have a system installed with yast1 WITHOUT splash screen. I WANT to enable splash screen, but how do I do that? I've the line 'BOOT_SPLASH="yes"' in my rc.config but it doesn't work.... #upgraded to 0.99 #and was hearing rumors of a company called Slackware which #offered Linux on #floppies, and some wierd named distro with a name that begins #with a Y that #offered the first Linux CD. # I believe you mean Ygdrassil.
