Hi, did anaybody installed shapecfg allready ? Just rebuild the shapecfg-2.2.15-2.rc.rpm and then tried to install the i386 rpm on a SuSE 7.2, but it refuses to install and complains about my kernel version NOT beeing >= 2.0.36 !?? 3D in X [SaX2]

I'm using the auto configuration option in SaX2 (sax2 -a), but SaX2 is asking me (Intel I815 onboard card) if I want to use 3D. I don't want to use 3D, so I don't want this question asked (for autoinstall purposes). Does anyone know how I could supress this question? Hi, You can boot on the CD/DVD. When you get to the menu with Start Installation, choose Boot Installed System. Then you must enter which disk to be booted, e.g. /dev/hda. Hi, I use a HP Deskjet 950C printer and Epson 1240U scanner, which both works fine with SuSE 7.3. Both were autodetected and no problems in configuration. In magazine tests I have seen, Epson has been the winner on the scanner side, with their Perfection series, and HP is the winner on the printer side, with their DeskJet series. How do i turn on the USB ports on my machine.The suse site said Use YAST System administration Change configuration file Simply change the line: START_HOTPLUG="no" to START_HOTPLUG="yes" The name of this variable in previous SuSE Linux versions is: START_USB="" So after I go to "change configuration file",I see other stuff but no "hotplug" stuff.I hit F4 to search for it.Nothing shows up.What am I doing wrong ? Below is what i have in mind: HP Scanjet 5400 - 2400x2400 dpi optical about EURO 240 HP Deskjet 920 - 2400x1200 dpi -- Dos support About EURO 130 versus Epson Perfection 1650 - 1600x3200 dpi optical About EURO 210 Epson C80 -- 2880x720 dpi About EURO 140 It looks to me that the HP is capable of finer scanning and printing but who knows how to interpret these numbers. Help with autostart apps ...

Help! I totally f&^%$ up my system! I configured my SuSE linux box to do the following: 1. Auto reboot if shutdown 2. When starting up, automatically log in as user 'abc' (do not prompt for login name or password) 3. Auto start a java application called CrushFTP.jar located here: /home/abc/crushftp/CrushFTP.jar Steps 1 and 2 work fine. I tried to pull off Step 3 by adding the following line to the very bottom of the .bashrc file (located in the /home/abc directory): java -jar /home/abc/crushftp/CrushFTP.jar (I know this command works because if I go into a shell prompt and type this command, then my application starts up.) So, I saved the .bashrc file and restarted my computer and now what happens is this: Linux boots as normal, logs in automatically, my program (crushftp) starts up, but now I get a grey desktop instead of the normal KDE desktop, menu bars, desktop icons etc. If I try to quit the crushftp program, the screen stays blank, and crushftp starts up again by itself! Help! I tried this: Reboot, and when Lilo comes up, I tried typing "linux single" to log in. When I get to the prompt, I try to use vi or mc to edit the .bashrc file, but I get an error that the file is read-only and doesn't let me change it! Any ideas how I can modify this .bashrc file? I need to delete that last line I added to it! Also, what is the correct way to get an app to automatically start up whenever the computer is restarted? thanks --------------------------- Eric Carbone

New Hard Drive problem

Hi all! I have a quite old computer (a K6 233). Unfortulately last week the hard drive broke up. Now I have a new Maxtor 40Gbyte D740-6L and I want to put it there, but the BIOS does not agree. When trying to probe the primary master it hangs. I know that Linux Kernel does not trust the BIOS about IDE drives, so I want to try to bypass the BIOS with another older hard drive. The problem is: how? I think I have to disable the IDE controller in which the new HD is plugged, will Linux "feel" the new HD in the correct way? Could I do this with a booting cdrom? (ie: just booting, loading the kernel then mounting root on the new HD). Praise

I have a question about kmail . I have, on all out going email, a signature file appended to the reply and forward. It is always, at the end of the email. How can I configure kmail to put the signature at the top of the reply? I have looked in Configure Kmail but did not see where I can make the choice. Maybe I am over looking it. Any ideas. Evolution desperation (forgive me, SuSE, for I have sinned...)

I've been using Evolution for a few months now, but it ran slower than molasses in December on my SuSE 7.3 box. I **had** upgraded it to 0.99.whatever (don't ask me how...I'm still burning incense to appease the little gnomes that nip at my feet a night), but I had hoped to upgrade to 1.03.whatever in an attempt to speed it up. Silly me. Silly, silly, assinine me. I dled the latest from ximian, both tarball and rpm (I **thought** I might try to compile it...harumph.) with all the packages I thought I needed (again, both tarball and rpm). Compiling, I spent 24 hours trying to chase down dependencies, compiling and re-compiling packages with the --prefix=/opt/gnome. When that failed (due to giving up on trying to edit makefiles--something I'm very inexperienced at), I started using yast to install the rpms. Still no dice. Tried both the ximian and the non-ximian rpms (yes, I uninstalled before installing the next). Another 24 hours and I am back to using Balsa (no complaints...realized I missed it's speed and simplicity) but I really want to get Evolution working again (I use it as much for its PIM capability as its e-mail). Could someone help me recover? Do I need to wipe all the previous installs (both rpms and tarballs with 'make uninstall')? How can I get Evolution to function again WITHOUT installing the whole package? I really prefer stock Gnome to Ximian as I have more flexibility in configuring my desktop and getting stuff to work. Thank you in advance as I go back to the great OSS altar and burn more incense (what's that, little gnome, you want the red stick instead of the green tonight???? Promise to leave my cats alone????) ;-> Specs: SuSE 7.3 on a AMD 450 using Gnome 1.4.

I have SuSE 7.3 x86 running and have edited the lilo.conf to do a max luns of 128. I am able to see disks up to lun 16 but not beyond. The good news is that the luns do not need to be sequential. Recently tried SuSE 7.3 with 3dfx Voodoo 3 (AGP) and Matrox Mystique (PCI) which worked but some minor details may be of interest: 1) 3D capability (glx,dri) is turned off on 3dfx card 2) Of Traditional, Xinerama, and Clone options...Traditional was "friendliest"...others gave me mouse problems (PS2). These are definitely not 'state-of-the-art' cards but the observations may be interest. Kmail Annoyance

Hi All, Using KMail 1.3.1 (KDE 2.2.1), SuSE 7.3. I like to read my mail sorted by thread. The annoyance comes in when reading mail in a thread made up of messages that have arrival dates that are later than the dates of the messages below this particular thread. Annoyance = If I delete the top message of the current thread, then the highlight drops down to the next message in the current thread. So far so good. The annoyance is that KMail then resorts the messages based on the new highlighted message. Now the highlighted message header might be down at the bottom of the header list. This is very annoying, as the highlight jumps up and down the message header list as you delete read messages. Does anybody understand what I mean? Does anyone else share this same annoyance? Is there some way to configure KMail to not do this? I really like KMail except for this annoyance. Cheers

Where should one apply preventative measures to reject unwanted traffic that could come on over a dial out line to an isp connection from a system that will be used as a workstation but has the full professional suse 7.3 install.? The object is to be able to browse to receive mail from the isp user user account and to receive news from news groups maintained at the isp. Should I look at xinetd and or iptables and or ipchains? Samba sharing printer for Win-2000

Hi I remeber there was some configuring neccessary if I want to share a printer with win-2000 from linux-samba in LAN. It is working for win-98 etc, but 2000 just can't seem to print on it. The error I get is "Printer not available"... Driver is installed, and I believe it should work.... Any help...? Jaska.

Hi! Somebody can explain how to print header with the recent version of emacs? I'll explain more. At the University we use emacs and when we print from emacs, there is an header at the top of the file with our names, number of pages, date/time, name of the file... The source code seem to be more formatted and when I print it, it looks like a professionnal document. When I print with emacs at home, (on suse 7.3 pro, I installed the most recent version of emacs) it is only ascii text with no formatting and it seems to be a note pad printing style. How can I tell emacs to print the header like at University. Sax'ual problems..

I'm having problem with Sax, more specifically, Sax 2. I just installed 7.3 and when I go in to change my display settings my mouse gets screwed up and I can't use it...even though I don't touch the mouse settings. I can't use my keyboard either, even though I don't make any changes to the keyboard settings. The only way "I know" how to get the settings back is to reinstall. Is there another way? Alt + Tab keystroke broken after Yast2 update/7.2

I used the Alt + Tab keyboard shortcut extensively on my 7.2 workstation. Last week I did the Yast2 online update. Now the Alt + Tab keystroke is busted - it presents the control center window right in the middle of the desktop, but it does not disapear after you've tabbed to the app you want to switch to. I need to kill KDE in order to recover - and don't have proper use of the keyboard sufficient to exit or save work I've got going in the other apps (arrrgh!). I didnt think the KDE was updated in the process. I have kde 2.1.2 on the machine. Any thoughts ? thanks Rich

Anyone know if there is a CVS like system that would be more geared towards a small SOHO like environment. A full blown CVS is a bit of an overkill, but we really need version control on the one project and all supporting documentation. Currently we are using a homegrown tcl app to do our version control on our app project and Star Office on our documents version control. Kind of a pain but it works. So I thought that just maybe someone else has done something geared towards a SOHO environment in the realm of Open Source.

Yes, but I created a bootable CD with a bootfloppy as boot image (-b option in mkisofs), and in that case this won't work. I seem to have forgotten how to get into MySQL and work. (It's been a while but I'm starting up again. ORiNOCO problems

I've been tinkering with my new ORiNOCO silver card - trying to get it to work, and there're some things I wonder about: I've got Wireless-tools installed (version 21-1) Which I built from the source RPM. Once I did this, the card is recognized and initialized (beep-beep), but no lights appear on the card. The orinoco modules appear to load: orinoco_cs 4832 1 orinoco 27760 0 [orinoco_cs] hermes 3328 0 [orinoco_cs orinoco] ds 6832 2 [orinoco_cs] pcmcia_core 43008 0 [orinoco_cs ds i82365] Cardctl output on the card is as follows: #cardctl ident Socket 0: product info: "Lucent Technologies", "WaveLAN/IEEE", "Version 01.01", "" manfid: 0x0156, 0x0002 function: 6 (network) #cardctl status: Socket 0: 5V 16-bit PC Card function 0: [ready] I've associated the card with eth1 (using YAST2.) samba 2.2.3a trouble

I upgraded samba from 2.2.1a to 2.2.3a from Karols rpm that he is providing. Ihave to readd all usings then reset the password an it want let me set the password, just errors out. anyone had this problem after upgrading to 2.2.3a. thanks for info. im glad i did not do this on a working production machine 1st. i know better then to do that hehe. jack

Hi all Upon trying to run the news build of Sax2 tonite after changing monitors, I realized it wasn't going to work! I had remembered when updating the program it came back with a dependency for "libhd.so.2", but disregarded it at the time. Well, I couldn't do that tonite as it needs that in order to work! I had to go back to the build included with 7.3 and that worked ok to get me going again. What is the "sysp.pl" file and what does libhd.so.2 come from? One seems to point at the other and the new sax2 will need the libhd.so.2 to work now. bash the hard way?

I am just starting to make some simple bash scripts for my system. I have made a bash script to backup some files in my home directory and tar them, then remove the old files. This works fine, but I just wonder if there is a shorter/easier way to do this. Below is the script I made, any suggestions? Preventing "Read only buffer" with emacs & group-wriatable file?

Hello, Lately I've had to set up a couple users that don't belong to the "users" group, only to a custom group. They need to be able to edit some group writable files. I have noticed a singularly weird coincidence: user1 does a CVS checkout of the directory /www/site Due to the users umask and group, files in the check out are 664 and owned by users1:specialgroup (and dirs are 775) No, user2 cd's to /www/site after user1 is done. In there is a file, show.php Basically, all I've gotten user2@host:/www/site > emacs -nw show.php Makes changes, saves them, verifies them with a web browser, all is well. User 2 decided that one more change needs to be made. User 2 runs exactly the same command a second time: user2@host:/www/site > emacs -nw show.php But THIS time, when user 2 starts to type they get the following error in emacs: Buffer is read-only: #<buffer show.php> What on earth is the deil with that? The permissions on the file have not changed: -rw-rw-r-- 1 user1 specialgroup 4910 Feb 19 17:50 show.php I see that Emacs is in mode "Text CVS". I suspect that it is upset because a CVS checkin hasn't been made since the last changes. If user2 then uses vi or pcio, there's no problem making a second change. Does anyone know how to get rid of this incredibly annoying problem? BTW switching to fundamental-mode doesn't help, as the buffer is still read-only.
