Thanks very much to all who responded for helping me find a solution to my problem ! After adding the line "/sbin/modprobe ide-scsi" in /etc/init.d/boot.local, the ide-scsi module was loaded correctly on boot-up. Using xcdroast I was then able to get it configured and up and running quite fast. While not wishing to condemn other similiar packages, I must say I found xcdroast most user-friendly and therefore the ideal way for getting a CD-WRITER going from Linux. for the first time.

OT My Cd has hickups

Listening to a cd while working on my computer is nice ;-). What I do not likeis that after relatively time the Cd player has hickups. Most time the first number is played very well but after that the music starts to hang and the music is not that nice anymore. Is this something that is caused by Suse or is it my cd drive. How to improve the functioning of the cdrom drive. It is a 2x read write. Could I buffer the music or so? Or should I send my cdrom for a service? When I try to play another cd I very often get the pause sign in the the kscd cd player and cannot start playing the cd. mouse problems on new install

Hi I just started an install of 7.3 Pro on a new machine. It is a Compaq 5423US, pentium, 1.6GHz, 512M ram and 80G hard drive, using a usb keyboard and ps/2 mouse with a wheel. I used Partition Magic to reduce the Win XP partition to 15 GB and set the remainder as unallocated. Started the install from the DVD and all was woking well, including the mouse. When the install completed, I had no mouse cursor, but I did have mouse movement.. No matter which selection I made in YAST1 in the mouse area (GPM setup) was I able to get a mouse cursor on the screen. Thank you for startinfg to read this, please continue to read this is you know something about X server and old motherbords like Intel440LX. This probleme I have had eate all me night sleep I realllllllllly need some help. So here it comes: I have this configuration Cpu 300Mhz PII, mainbord Intel440Lx, 324Mb Ram, Geforce 2 Mx 400 graphics card. It all worked nice until I reseted my bios. After that my Pc complecty locks away when I try to switch from grphics mode to text mode. I can't turn off my computer from X because it can't get to the console and it stucks in the way. I also launched the K Control Center and all is also matching French/Belgium. I've looked at the documentation and it mentions a long folder display but I can't find it in the config. Also instead of the initial 3 window setup I get one window with the folders and another with eh header and articles. How do I get back to the original? I tried renaming the knodeui.rc under home and it didn't do it. What other news readers do you use?

Stresstesting a SCSI (or IDE) disk?

Is there any utilities for stress testing a Scsi disk? Hi everybody, I coded a simple utility to archive email messages... For learning purpose, I successfully tried to buil a rpm package for SuSE (7.2) (thank's to Bodo Bauer's detailed and clear explanations). Since my tool is (seems to be ;) stable and I think it could be useful, I'd like to know if it possible to submit it to SuSE as a contribution... if so, what should I do? Second question... is there any place where I can find a SuSE rpm for postfix's latest version (1.1.3)? Thank you very much. pcmcia and newer kernels

Hi, I reinstalled 7.3 ( new hard drive ) last week. I want to use a newer suse kernel than the one included on the dvd, I find my orinoco card hangs on large transfers and was wondering if a newer one would have updated source code. do I need to do anything extra apart from installing the suse kernel rpms. eg recompile pcmcia stuff. I ask, because up until now, I compiled pcmcia stuff by hand and never seemed to get the boot sequence working properly, ie nfs used to fail because pcmcia hadnt finished initialising. dids

My pet peeve java is keeping me busy again. It seems with every release SuSE fails to address the issues of creating an out of the box setup. I lived with konq for 4 months without java but time has come to change this. I noticed in 7.3 the java is actually meant to be in the PATH. PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/bin:/usr/lib/java/bin:/usr/games/bin:/usr/games:/opt/gnome/bin:/opt/kde2/bin:/opt/kde/bin:.:/opt/gnome/bin But I can't get Konq to get anything java related to function. Mozilla of course works fine with java and javascript. So I do a $ ls -l /usr/lib/java/bin lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Nov 29 08:46 java -> .java_wrapper Of course the file java_wrapper is not there. Typical. No worries I just try one of the 3 other java implementations suse delivers. ibm java2 or jdk1.1.8 or jdk1.3. Gateway Stalls Intermittently (LONG)

Hello All: I waited some time to post this because I use Comcast Cable and as you may recall that just went from @home to their own ISP @comcast.net. I am having trouble with intermittent stalling of my gateway box. Here's the information for that box: Running SuSE 7.2 Pro. 2 NIC cards (LNETX100 and RTL8139) set as eth0 and eth1, where eth0 is connected to the cable modem and uses dhcpd to get it's IP address and eth1 is connected to the home LAN and routes/ masquerades using iptables and SuSEfirewall2 v1.7. It has 128 megs of RAM in a AMD-K6-2 400 CPU and a 2.1 G HDD. Yes, I know I don't need it, but KDE is installed by default and only used when I want to use KMail. The system runs beautifully, doing what I set it up to do - route. But every now and again, it just stops and I have do the windoze thing reboot. I tried rcnetwork restart and rcroute restart to no avail. Only rebooting fixes it until the next time. Once, I left it overnight and the problem fixed itself. Tried that again, and it didn't. I do notice in tty1 that SuSEFirewall2 says it must run dhclient and it is turned on in the rc.config.firewall2, but dhclient ALWAYS fails at boot up. Any thought, suggestions? More info needed? Yes, I have WiinXP. My setup on hard disk (38GB total size): 1 x FAT32 for win95 boot (1.5gb) 1 x NTFS for WinXP Pro (30gb) 1 x 7Gb or so remaining unpartitioned at back of hard disk where I want to install Linux. Thanks to all the people that have responded. Art, I might go with your suggsestions using Bootmagic. At least I have backed up my Hard disk on a 2nd hard disk already. I have spent many a weekend reinstalling Win XP ! Windowmaker and SuSE

Hi, I've finally installed Windowmaker 0.80 on SuSE 7.3 Pro (removed 0.65 that came with SuSE), but in the process I think I erased the main menu of Windowmaker. Now when I start windowmaker from kdm I get the windowmaker standard menu instead of the SuSE supplied one. Can someone tell me how can I get the old config menu, maybe from the CD's ? sendmail smart-host question

I use SENDMAIL_SMARTHOST in sendmail.rc.config to deliver my outgoing mail via my ISP's smpt server. (This sets "DS: in sendmail.cf.) Unfortunately, this causes mail between hosts on my local, private, network to be sent to my ISP's smtp server which, of course, knows nothing about the hosts on my network. And even if it did, it would be a waste to deliver mail for hosts on my local network via the ISP. sshd can't bind to port 22

Hello, While trying to fix my monitor's invalid scan problem, I rebooted the machine. When it came back up, sshd failed to start. Scanner HP scanjet 3400C

I am the proud ;-( owner of a HP scanjet 3400C. I know that this scanner is not (yet) able to run on Linux but from a guy in Holland I got an test program that should get some functions of the scanner running. As I installed the neccesary lib's and whatever was needed I found that some subdirectories where mentioned that I do not have on my Suse 7.3. I think that redirecting of those directories is the way to solve the setup problem but that is way above my capabilities. Printing Questions

I am 'having fun' with 7.3, but I am not having so much fun with printing. I installed CUPS and am hoping to use this, and it is kinda working. I can print to my printer (Canon MultiPASS C5500 connected to my Windows computer downstairs), which I finally got working in 6.4 after just sharing it over the LAN (it is a GDI printer). It printed OK with 6.4 (apsfilter, lprold, ghostscript in 6.4). Now, with CUPS, which actually lists the exact printer driver, it will print from Mozilla, Acrobat reader, tests, etc. (Actually I think I changed the print command in Acrobat to xpp as it printed the formatting characters before that). Star Office 5.2 will not print correctly. I have been studying this problem for some time. Questions: 1. Does CUPS printing need apsfilter? 2. If I am understanding the printing process, this is the sequence. App sends to a filter to convert it to a printable format, then to spooler, then to ghostscript to convert it to the specific printer's format, then to the printer. Is this close? 3. If that is close, since Mozilla (with its default print command, which I think prints as postscript), and Acrobat with its pdf format, print correctly, then I would guess SO5.2's problem is the filter. Does this sound feasable? 4. I am confused about the filtering stage with CUPS. Is it done with mime.convs and mime.types, which only seem to be able to handle very few types, or is it handled before CUPS, thus CUPS only needs to work with the output from ghostscript? I am trying to get SuSE Linux 7.3 to write and burn a CD-R, and have been folowing the README for koncd. Managed to carry out all procedures outlined in the README namely 1) lines to /etc/modules.conf alias char-major-21 sg # line already there post-install sg modprobe "-k" ide-scsi # line added 2) /etc/lilo.conf append = "hdc=ide-scsi hdb=ide-scsi # line added 3) On reboot no ide-scsi module found with the command lsmod, but after entering # "-k" ide-scsi from the console prompt, the module is loaded 4) Subsequent steps 4,5,6 of the readme carried out ok except that in step 5 I found that /etc/fstab mounts the CD-WRITER as /dev/cdrecorder instead as /dev/cdr as mentioned in the README, so left it unchanged. 5) On running koncd setup there were no error messages, however to my surprise I could not perform any operations on a CD-R. Would like to know how to get the ide-scsi module properly loaded and whether I need to add a line in /etc/fstab to mount /dev/cdr in addition to the line in fstab: /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 ? Any other tips also please !

Mutt configuration

I'm trying to get Mutt up and working. I 'can' get Mutt running. My problem is reading/downloading mail from my ISP's mail server. My ISP requires username/password login for email reading/downloading/sending. Every time I press Shift+G in Mutt I get this error message: "Login failed. ADSL doesn't connect

I can still connect using ISDN, and I checked my ISP's (1und1.de) web site, but did not see any reports of outages - just press releases. Any thoughts on what this could be? running suse 7.2, kernel 2.4.16, kde 2.1.2, matrox g200 video card and sony cpd-200es monitor. I recently updated xserver from 4.0.3 to 4.1.0. then I was not able to kill xserver using cntrl+alt+backspace or switch to text console using cntrl+alt+F1. As I was running xvidtune utility from root console, I got a message on the console saying "X connection to: 0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown)". If anyone would know what this message means and how to resolve it. thanks in advance.

xmms failure

I ran 'snd' to edit several mp3 files and then could not restart xmms. Hi all, when using rpm -U, should we use the same package-name/version or can use different version? Example, if I have installed package pkg101, if I get pkg102.rpm, when I run rpm -U pkg102, it will automatically uninstall pkg101 first? X Windows Problem

SuSE 7.1/nVidia GeForce2 w/65MB RAM/KDE 2.2.2 nVIDIA\NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2313.src.rpm and nVIDIA\NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2313.src.rpm rebuild and installed without warning or error messages. This worked with glx enabled without problems until I had to reinstall Linux to a reformatted ext2 partition. Even though I saved the functional SF86Config file before I reinstalled it no longer works. Configured XWindows with Sax2, again without any errors, which allows a resolution of 1600x1200 (best the monitor can give). However, when I edit XF86Config according to the NVIDIA Installation Guide (used to work) startx bombs (the log file is attached). The error messages are: (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVdriver kernel module! (EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting *** yet, further up in the log file,. I find: (II) Module glx: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation" compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.2313 Module class: XFree86 Server Extension ABI class: XFree86 Server Extension, version 0.1 (II) Loading extension GLX (II) LoadModule: "nvidia" (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o I don't have the faintest idea as to what's going on here, but I need to be able to use glx for a number o application. XEmacs+LaTeX

In SuSE 6.4 I recall having a menu item in XEmacs that let me insert LaTeX environments. Also, <tab> formatted LaTeX nicely the way it does C, C++, java, perl, etc. SuSE 7.3 still colours LaTeX nicely but doesn't have these extra features. Does anyone know how to get them in 7.3. JDL

System upgrade problems - PHP and MySQL

I have finished to upgrade my server from a 6.4 server with a new harddisk to 7.3. Some small things I cannot find, ... getting blind. I do not find the reason why php not anymore works. I have even used the old httpd.conf file, but no success. Assuming you are using Windows clients and need something with all the facilities of Exchange and more and you are looking for commercial solutions then how about a Lotus Domino server and Notes clients. We use Domino at my work, it doesn't go wrong, and is MUCH more than an e-mail system, it is a full groupware system and very powerful. SuSE sell a Domino groupware package, you can see it at their web site. Our Domino server never seems to go wrong, has uptimes as long as the Linux system its running on and Lotus provide quarterly maintenance upgrades with bug fixes etc, which are free to download. You could also check out www.notes.net for more information. BTW you can even run the Notes client under Linux using Wine. Sean Akers. Hi, The subject says it all. I have a new Sony Vaio GR 214 MP and, after partitioning, now have 7.3 installed with Kernel 2.4.16/KDE 2.2.1. I would like to set up a network with my my Desktop machine and have an SMC 2632 PCMCIA card to link with my SMC AWR7004AWBR Wireless Barricade Router. Will the installation of the beta rpms from the SuSE ftp site allow this installation installation to coexist with a previous KDE 2.2.2 installation or should KDE 3 beta2 be installed from source to facilitate that??? I would like to be able to run either at will until I'm confident I can let KDE2.2.2 go. Thank You, Anthony
