I'm trying to get Mutt up and working. I 'can' get Mutt running. My problem is reading/downloading mail from my ISP's mail server. My ISP requires username/password login for email reading/downloading/sending. Every time I press Shift+G in Mutt I get this error message: "Login failed. USER: unknown or invalid command in this state [USER]" Here's the POP section of my .muttrc file: # POP ##################################################################### set pop_user = "jerryvb@ispwest.com" set pop_pass = "password" set pop_delete = no set pop_host = "pop3.ispwest.com" #set pop_port = 110 #set pop_last = no Anybody see any problems here? I also posted this to the mutt-users list, but am not getting much help there, but I know a lot of you on this list use Mutt. Thanks
Mutt's pop/imap support kinda blows. I would suggest useing fetchmail. It's WAY better then Mutt's built in pop support. * Jerry Van Brimmer (jerryvb@ispwest.com) [020223 12:20]: ->I'm trying to get Mutt up and working. I 'can' get Mutt running. OK Ben, thanks, I heard that on the Mutt list too. I know you're an expert on
Mutt, so after using fetchmail to download, do you the use Mutt to Read & Send
mail?

I use a combo of fetchmail, procmail, mutt and sendmail and it works wonderfully. I gave the new version (KDE2.2.2) of Kmail a looking at on my workstation at the office. It munched my incoming mailbox so bad that I lost about 30 pieces of mail. That right there has scared me off GUI mailers with goofy mailbox formats forever. OK Ben, I made me a .fetchmailrc file according to the example in the manual on
page 99. Then, after running fetchmail, I got:
jerry@linux:~> fetchmail
fetchmail: removing stale lockfile
POP3 connection to pop3.ispwest.com failed: Connection refused
fetchmail: Query status=2 (SOCKET)
jerry@linux:~>
Any ideas?
Thanks

Yep, sure did. Here's my .fetchmailrc:
poll pop3.ispwest.com proto pop3 user jerryvb@ispwest.com pass xxxxxx options
ssl
The original is not wrapped after options.

options ssl? This could be your problem. I assume you're sure they're using ssl, but are you sure what port they're running it on. I think fetchmail defaults to port 995 with pop3 ssl, but could it be they're running on the default pop3 port?! the "connection refused" generally means there was no service on the other end to receive the connection attempt //Anders

Jerry, did you try to connect without SSL?
The original is not wrapped after options.
fetchmail: removing stale lockfile POP3 connection to pop3.ispwest.com failed: Connection refused fetchmail: Query status=2 (SOCKET)
Out of curiosity I tried to connect to port 110 on pop3.ispwest.com: telnet pop3.ispwest.com 110 Trying 216.52.245.18... Connected to pop3.ispwest.com. Escape character is '^]'. +OK VopMail POP3 Server 5.2.203.0 Ready <8107176.1014501305.245@ispwest.com> QUIT +OK ispwest.com POP3 server signing off (mailbox empty) Connection closed by foreign host. I think fetchmail should work for you without SSL. -Kastus
Sendmail doesn't have much to do with fetchmail..fetchmail is pulling mail while sendmail will just send. What I would recommend is taking the ssl out of the line and see if it works with just pop. If it does..then the fetchmail doesn't have ssl support..or something like that. * Landy Roman (landy@despiertapr.com) [020223 13:48]: ->> jerry@linux:~> fetchmail ->> fetchmail: removing stale lockfile ->> POP3 connection to pop3.ispwest.com failed: Connection refused ->> fetchmail: Query status=2 (SOCKET) ->> jerry@linux:~> -> -> ->make sure sendmail is running -> ->do ps aux | grep sendmail -> -> ->-- ->To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com ->For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com ->Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq and the ->archives at http://lists.suse.com -> -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- "I've never been quarantined. That worked Ben. Fetchmail is now downloading 680 messages from my mailbox. What
does the "flushed" mean? Deleted from server?

Yes...deleted from server I would think. It looks like the fetchmail your using doesn't have ssl support compiled in or something is weird server side. -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- "I've never been quarantined. Mail downloaded - now, how do I read it with Mutt?
