problem with .bashrc

Hi: I am having a problem with the .bashrc file on my SuSE 7.3 computer. I use the following entry at the end of my .bashrc but it puts $KDEDIR and $QTDIR in my path twice! What have I done wrong? export QTDIR=/home/kdetest/qt-x11-free-3.0.1 echo $QTDIR export KDEDIR=/home/kdetest/kde-copy echo $KDEDIR export PATH=$QTDIR/bin:$KDEDIR/bin:$PATH export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$KDEDIR/lib:$QTDIR/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH export MANPATH=$QTDIR/doc/man/:$MANPATH If I just put this in a file called kde3-compile and do: source kde3-compile the double inclusion of the the added paths does not happen. Guys, I got this message after I replied to Ben Rosenberg's rant on helping people with windows issues, what in the world does it mean? remote printing

I can't seem to get output from suse3 (using apsfilter and lpr) to suse1, which has the printer. Local output from suse1 to its own port works well. Warning: I tried Opera from work, on Windows. It was kinda nice but: somehow it killed, permanently, a Visual Basic routine that tied Windows 98 into an AS-400 computer for some data. I don't know how, and IT won't help me. They want to completely wipe everything off my drive and reinstall W98 from scratch. I am going for kernel recompile (I am getting 2.4.16 from kernel.org right now).. cause I didnt find any other way to restore those minor numbers. I booted from a floppy as well and couldnt remove them neither (got "Operation not permitted" message). Any suggestion? Besides cd / ; rm -rf / :-) Thanks! Raul

Compiling drivers in SMP mode

I'm running SuSE Enterprise Server 7 on a dual processor ia32 and trying to compile driver source. I'm relatively new to Linux. Initially I received two warnings: kernel source version (2.4.7) does not match running kernel (2.4.7-64GB-SMP) and kernel source configuration (UP) does not match running kernel (SMP) I was able to eliminate the first warning by running "make include/linux/vershion.h CONFIG_SMP=1 CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G=1" which fixed the UTS_RELEASE define in version.h. But I don't know how to configure the source for SMP at compile time. Any pointers appreciated. Chris H

I wonder if someone can point me out how to read & write chinese in SuSE. I already change the KDE language to chinese, but can't read a things. I believe this is font isue, but I don't know which font support chinese. I haven't do research for chinese input method for Linux. Please enlighten me where should I start for this. corrupted tty(3 to 7) and recreating them with mknod

Hi, (distro Red Hat 7.2) ttys 3 to 7 got corrupted, mingetty is unable to initialize them and I can chmod, chgrp nor chown them... neither remove them!! How can I get rid of them and rebuild them using mknod? Anybody had this kind of problem before?? Thanks alot!! Raul

SuSEfirewall5.1 and droping internal lan

Hi, I have a setup as follows Internet =pppoe fixed ip LAN= eth0 192.168.1.0/24 DMZ= eth2 192.168.2.0/29 I have set SuSE firewall 5.1 on the Firewall/router box and on the DMZ box. Evertyhing works fine until LAN starts a rsync or an ftp request. Then the commnication to LAN drops down I need to bring eth0 down and up again. If it's mail or web traffic everything works fine. Below is my setup for the main firewall. What do I need to stop the LAN from droping . So far I just set a cron job which checks the LAN connection for eth0 and if ping does not answer runs /sbin/ifconfig eth 0 up. Continuing with my older thread, about respawning to fast... I saw in my logs that /sbin/mingetty is unable to initialize /dev/tty2-6 ... I have checked permissions and group, they seem find but the odd thing is that I am unable to chmod them (I want to give read and execute permission to group and others, just to do some trial & error... but it says operation not permitted and I am doing it as root!!!) Any ideas of what can have gone wrong?? If my tty(s) got corrupted, should I use mknod to regenerate them? Thanks! Raul

Font issues getting worse...

Starting to get these after updating to the newer XFFree42, but had font issues that occured after messing with elven fonts and with kcontrol's font installer. Executing /sbin/conf.d/SuSEconfig.fonts... Updating fonts.scale for truetype Updating fonts.scale for CID Updating X11 font directory truetype... /usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir: bad format for /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype/fonts.scale file /usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir: failed to create directory in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype Any ideas at all? Newbie Installation Problems ...

Hi Folks, If you could help an unwashed newbie, I would be grateful ... My box has these components: Asus P4B motherboard Pentium 4 1.8 Gz 512 MB SDRAM 2 - Maxtor 60.1 GB 7200 rpm drives (Windows XP is unfortunately installed on the first drive) Plextor 16/10/40A CD-RW ATI Radeon VE video card Sony floppy US Robotics modem The monitor I am using is an Apple 17" Studio Display. This is an LCD with Apple's proprietary ADC digital connection. I am using a Gefen ADC-to-DVI converter to attach the DVI output of the Radeon VE to the monitor's ADC cable. Red Hat 7.2 installs cleanly with this configuration, but SuSE 7.3 is having problems with the monitor. I have tried many combinations of resolution, bit depth and frequency, none of which pass the installation test. I am able to install without X11. The monitor performs just fine for the YaST2 installation up to the point of monitor configuration. It is low resolution screen, but no problems. When I successfully install Red Hat I use a generic monitor setup of 1280 x 1024 at 60 Hz and 24 bits. Is anyone successfully using the Radeon VE with 7.3? Thanks a heap, Glen

Hi: When a machine, redhat 7.2, that is our gateway, gets booted it shows: init respawning to fast and it doesnt get up to runlevel 5 Probably /etc/inittab got corrupted, right? What else could it be? Thanks, Raul

KDE + LOCALE

I have been struggling trying to further understand why I can't get Chinese setup properly on my system (7.3) and during this process I noticed that my locale was set to 'C' (default). Trying to change this through the KDE Control Centre doesn't work. I change the settings. The settings take effect in that one window in the Control Center and I am prompted to log out and in of KDE. On logging back into KDE I find that the settings have been changed back to Default C. Anyone have any clue why this might be? Jethro

Dear Dave, Thanks for the answer. I have checked the time interval between the beeps and it is exactly 5 minutes. After looking into /var/log/messages I found that my newly installed smartups is complaining in five minutes intervals about the fact that it cannot find my UPS. Hi everyone. 7.3, samba lan 7.3 server with some linux and some w98. The server is a DNS 192.168.0.1 Something has happened after we tried to install the firewall and now the server does not show on the clients although the clients can see each other. We have since disabled the firewall done a rcsmb restart rcnamed restart and rcsquid restart. The clients still cannot see the server (where all their files are and where the internet comes from). We get the message from the kernel as above coming from each of the clients connected. Thousands of them. We cannot ping the clients from the server either nor the server from the clients. HELP PLEASE! Steve.

Some persons on the list have had the same problem and they were using qt 2.3.2. If that's the problem, downgrade to qt 2.3.1 and you will solve it. Hi! I'm trying to use the autoinstall option on SuSE 7.3. There is some documentation about this subject. So, I've changed the 'syslinux.cfg' and added a 'suse/setup/descr/info' to my bootdisk. I also created a 'part_00000' file which describes my partitioning scheme for the disks. However, now I've got a problem. When the install arrives at the partitioning part, the system shows the current partitioning and then asks for user input. End of the story, the automatic install stops at this point. Video encoding?

In my attempts to break my "heroin addiction" to Windows, I have a question for everyone... one of the last few Windows applications I have not been able to replace is a slick little program called VirtualDub. I use it on a regular basis to re-encode episodes of Enterprise that I download each week. The best quality episodes are MPEG encoded at about 450MB each. I can use VirtualDub to re-encode to AVI using the latest DivX and get a file size of about 200MB - that means I can cram 3 episodes onto one CDROM instead of 1 per CDROM if I leave them alone. So, the question is, are there are any Linux apps that can do this? I haven't discovered anything yet. BCast2000 is targetted (as far as I can tell) at building a video.. stitching audio tracks to video etc. All I want it an app that will simply re-encode a video to a DivX4.x codec.... haven't found one that did it either reliably, or at all. Any suggestions would be more than welcome. C. -- This is Linux country. If you listen carefully, you can hear Windows reboot...

Orb USB drive with SuSE?

Hello... I have a Castlewood Orb USB 2.2 gig removable hard drive. It uses a USB interface to connect to the computer. They provide a SCSI to USB adapter with the particular one I purchased. It is predominantly used with M$ Winders. I would like to use mine with SuSE Linux 7.2. Has anyone done this? If so, how did you accomplish it? The PIII computer I use for my amateur radio TCPIP gateway has the standard pair of built-in USB ports. Is there any possibilty of accessing the Orb drive through them? Thanks in advance. errors with tar

I'm trying to back up my home directory using the following command from the /home directory: tar cvf /backup/rcordell.tar rcordell tar gets most of the way through, then at the same place every time it stops with the error message: Exit delayed due to error I can't seem to find out why it is failing; it isn't lack of disk space or anything like that. Does anyone have an idea what might be happening? Is there a better method to backing up a branch of a directory tree? Thanks, Ron Cordell

SSH behind a Router

Hi: I installed a Linux box as a router. All right with that, but now I can't use shh to connect the machine on the "other side" Before the network split I use to connect to that machine via ssh. Know somebody why? It seems that ssh only accepts local subnet by default but I can't find where to change it. Thank you, Martin.
