Thanks for the tip Tom - although the file /etc/modules.conf had no references to sound-slot-1 or sound-service-1-0 I simply added those two lines to the file and then the problem was solved. alias sound-slot-1 off alias sound-service-1-0 off I meant those messages only appeared in the console log when logging in as system administrator (root) as opposed to login as any other user. On looking at Yast2 hardware setup for sound, I noticed that the ES1371 card had been automatically configured from my old settings during update, but that an additional card '5880 Audio PCI' was listed in the list box titled 'Sound card to configure'. Perhaps the console log was somehow referring to that card as sound-slot-1 ? autostart apps

I have an app I want to start up automatically every time the PC is booted into KDE. I added a command to my .bashrc file in my local directory, and the application starts up, but then it keeps opening again and again and again. Hi Eric and Deborah, You don't even need to edit /etc/atalk/netatalk.conf - in SuSE 7.3 it comes ready to run. And what is this "reboot" of which you speak? Once installed, just run /etc/init.d/atalk start from the root prompt. Have fun! "Patch Update CD", how to make?

In Yast2, there is a menu option to apply a "Patch Update CD". Simply downloading the current updates from SuSE's website and placing them on a CD does not, however, appear to be sufficient to get it recognized as a Patch Update CD. Searching around in the sdb and online documents, I did not immediately see any notes on how to prepare a CD that would be recognized as a patch update CD. Can someone point me to documentation on how to do this, or perhaps explain it in a response to the list? In case it makes a difference, I'm runing 7.3/i386. Thanks, --Bob Drzyzgula

CUPS remote access denied

Hello, With a fresh SuSE 7.2 Pro installation with the StarOffice option, I have now installed CUPS 1.14, Gimp-print 4.2 ppd and XPP 1.1 on two hosts: A) the server to which the Epson Color Stylus 600 is normally attached. It works as a samba server and allows other windoze units on the home/office LAN to print to a "rawEpson" defined in CUPS. B) a notebook PC (both run SuSe 7.2) NIS, NFS etc is running OK for directory mounting but rather slow file transfer. The problem: access to the remote printer is denied. Note: This is the installation procedure that worked. I have Ghostscript 6.51 RPM from the SuSE FTP (to ensure that HylaFax would send), CUPS 1.14 (to be full featured) tar.gz, Gimp 1.2 RPM from SuSE 7.2, and Gimp-Print 4.2 tar.gz (because it worked after Foomatic just confused me) and XPP 1.1. Most important: to compile the tar.gz stuff. Check via YAST2 that the following are installed. glib, gtk (including their devel toolkits), flex, autoconf, automake, window-maker-devel. Uninstall fltk via YAST2 go to www.fltk.org and download FLTK 1.1 tar.gz. unzip it into a suitable directory (usr/src/packages/SOURCES/FLTK ) and then /configure make make install If the "make" still does not work check if any other stuff could not be found. (Note "make distclean" will cleanup any aborted stuff before you try to install again) if all goes OK then remove via YAST2 any printing stuff such as LDP and CUPS (older version) (if you don't CUPS browser will not be complete), GS 5.x and immediately use the RPM installation command to install the GS 6.51. (Note YAST2 will later complain that CUPS or one of the other three is not installed - ignore - discard it) Then install the GS 6.51 RPM (not via YAST2) Then install CUPS as per the CUPS documents instruction page in linuxprinting.org Note: do install the cupsomatic and the foomatic (I do not know if foomatic is really necessary; it is still a mystery). Do restart cups or reboot when the linuxprinting.org instructions say. Test CUPS using a standard ppd via the browser tool http://localhost:631 (so friendly) for your printer that comes with it. Install the print-gimp (read the readme) with the ./configure -with-gimp -with-cups options. Boot again. Use the CUPS browser to configure your printer again; this time with a gimp-print ppd (note that they still have a multiple entry bug - just select the first entry for your printer). Now you should have lots of printer configuration commands. Install XPP and then issue the xpp command to see the XPP window with your already configured printer. You can define various instances of this printer (gray, economy, photo, viewgraph etc). Configure StarOffice as per the instructions in www.linuxprinting,org/ppd-doc.html Then you have a really nice level of control. Well, it worked for me .... Now, back to the present problem: remote CUPS printing - access denied. in /etc/cups/cups.conf set BrowseAddress 192.168.0.255 (for example) then the remote browser will see the printers on the server. Next problem: Attempting a test print or configuration caused access denied "you don't have permission to access the resource on this server" I checked /etc/hosts.deny and hosts.allow and explicitely listed the possible hosts on the local network 192.186.0.2 , 192.186.0.3 etc. After rebooting a test print still causes the message "Forbidden you don't have permission to access the resource on this server." Also observed: While the server printer is idle, accepting jobs (as seen on the server browser) the same printer is shown as "printer busy, will retry in 10 seconds ...." What should I check next ......? (Also what is necessary to configure StarOffice and Gimp etc on the notebook for the remote printer i.e. the printer name string ?) -- John

Network configuration

Hi, After what seams like years of trying, I finally have got my USB ADSL modem working on my Linux box, and I can browse the web, send mail etc. fine Now the problem is, how do I get my Windows box to 'see' the internet connection? When I had the modem on my Windows box, I installed a proxy server on it, and set the 'proxy' of all the linux stuff to point to my Windows box, do I have to do the same thing on the Linux box? I have a working BIND configuration, and if I ping "www.slashdot.org" on my windows machine, I get... Pinging www.slashdot.org [64.28.67.150] .... Destination Host Unreachable... Does anyone have any advise with regards to the subject printing environment? I tried with CUPS to setup the E210 without any problems. YAST2 found the printer, however, nothing prints. There are no errors coming from the print programs. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thank You, Anthonn

I am setting up suse email server for the first time . Just wanted to have an opinion of the product . I have 3500 users located in around 45 locations all around the country .INDIA i have Leased lines + 64 kbps vpn connecting through out most of the locations . I would like to giv emy users pop a/c with web interface also .. The problem is that at my locations what shld i set up do i go with sub domains structure for each location and get some pop retrival s/w like exchange installed at each pof the locations or as most of my locations are connected thro VPN /Leased lines .I have my my users connect directly to the main server .. but wont the traffic be a big problem .. Secondly is Suse email server with post fix good enough to support such a setup . Thirdly how do i create subdomains in postfix in the suse email server II Fourthly when i create users in suse email server where is the mail for each of the user is getting stored .. finally what should i configure for redundancy Raid 1 wont that be slow ??? I have 2*36 Gb hdd scsi on ML 370 G2 compaq server with 760 Mb ram and dual processors .. should it be sufficient for such a setup ?? regard s... neeraj ....

I have a dual boot system suse 7.2 using konq & kmail win98se using oe5.5 I used default install for 7.2 I booted on the 7.2 using kong & kmail and I just visited the Opera website to download opera 6.x The site reccommended that I download the windows version of opera because of information my browser supplied. "Based on the information provided by your browser, this is the version of Opera we recommend you download: Version: 6.01Operating system: Windows 95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XPLanguage: English (United States)" Where do I look to find a way to correct this? How do I fix this?

shell script needed for testing packages

Hi All I would like to know if all the required dependency packages are installed on my system. By way of example: if I would like to know if the required packages for Evolution are on my system. Typically I could do an "rpm -qR evolution" which would list all the required files. Then I could one by one do "rpm -q --whatprovides . . . " and then rpm -q the result. This is long and tedious. Is there a simple equivalent rpm option or could some perl guru or shell script put together something that does the equivalent? Would be very grateful. TIA Eddie

Go for the Bind9 because of the security patches. Read the documentation and examples in /usr/share/doc/packages/bind9/, and you will be able to set it up the way you want it. Evolution Problems

I'm having a heck of a time with Evolution. I installed it from the 7.3 CD and am trying to upgrade to the latest and greatest. It appears to be an endless loop. I don't want to use the Ximian desktop, I just want Evolution. The CD version seems to work ok, but I can't access any of the help files and I can't seem to compose email. When I try it says it "Could not create compose window." Any help here???? Preferably how to upgrade. Thanks, Tom

I have a Linux Box powered by SuSE Linux 7.3 which works great except for mouse wheel!! I tried Protocol "IMPS/2" in XF86Config-4 but my mouse goes mad :-( why ???? this pc with this mouse (Logitech M-S48a) works fine with Mandrake 8.1 and Xfree 4.1.0.... why not on my SuSE ? help please!! g.

I was wondering if any of you have seen the article in eWeek about database comparisons. It is really a very fascinating article which challenges many concepts. Console log for linux

After update from SuSE 7.1 Prof to 7.3 Prof. with hardly any problems, I notice the following messages (twice repeated) in the Console log when booting up as 'root': linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-1 linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-1-0 When booting up as 'user' these messages do not appear. My sound system works in both cases so why do I get error messages ? Sound Card ES1371 was automatically detected and configured with options start ALSA and start sequencer enabled. Disabling them did not alter the output messages. I cannot find an explanation as to what sound-slot-1 or sound-service-1-0 means, so don't have a clue! Roy

I've been trying to understand the SuSE KDE menus better and I think I've got most of them figured out. I using SuSE 7.3 Pro. The default SuSE KDE global menus appear to be in /etc/opt/kde2/share/applnk/kde2/SuSE Any changes I make to the SuSE menu using the KDE menu editor are in ~/.kde2/share/applnk/SuSE But...what the heck are the entries in /etc/X11/susewm/AddEntrys/SuSE? They appear to be menu templates used to update the window manager menus when you add/remove application using YaST but there are multiple strange .desktop files in the subdirectories. Stuff like mozilla.desktop mozilla.-607.desktop Most of these have this inside: #SuSEwmSKIPthisFILE I'm missing something here and can't find anything in the books. Does anyone happen to know how this works? samba server an setting time on clients

I have added the line time server = Yes to my smb.conf file. All my win2k machines can do a net time \\servername /set an answer yes an the time is set to what is on samba server. Now the win9x machines will not do it. gives me an error # 2103, the server you specified can not be found. Changing Source of Installation

I want to take advantage of the YAST2 option of copying my SuSE CDs to my hard drive and install/uninstall packages from there. I copied the CDs to /usr/SuSE/CD1...CD2...and CD3. But when I click Next in the process it says the installation medium could not be mounted. How could the hard drive not be mounted? Or is there something else gone wrong? I'm using SuSE 7.3 Personal. Hello All, I save a blurb at linux taper cert. site that recommend not using any thing less than 2.4.17 with scsi tapes and backup software. I have only 2.4.16 under SuSE 7.2 now. I occasionally get errors trying to do backups. There was mention of data integrity. Anybody no or heard of this ? Regards, Keith B.

Hello Thank you for the advice. For our immediate problem (eth0) I'll implement SNMP. We will need authentication and RADIUS later though, because we will have wireless clients. But I suppose that won't be a problem, since the Cisco hardware will be talking to the RADIUS, not a software solution using pppd. Thank you again. rebuilding kernel

All, I am having a problem rebuilding a kernel a suse 7.0. My initial install, including source files, of 2.2.16 of the kernel was successful. I modified some parameters, rebuilt the kernel and rebooted successfully with my parameter changes. I then downloaded the 2.2.19 default kernel upgrade from the SuSe website and used rpm to install the package. My parameters were reset to the default. I downloaded the source for 2.2.19 and attempted to rebuild the kernel with my parameter changes but each time that I reboot after the rebuild, I get the following error: Partition check: Root fs not mounted VFS: cannot open root device 48:03 Kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 48:03. Can anyone tell me what this means and how to resolve this problem? Hi Keith, Your mileage may vary, but what I did on my home server was use ReiserFS and LVM. The latter lets me treat both drives as a single Logical Volume; the former lets me resize a partition as needed. (The resizing tools are better for Reiser than for Ext2/3.) SuSE 7.3 supports LVM, but it's not well documented. The best documentation can be found out at http://www.sistina.com/lvm_howtos/lvm_howto . NB: the Boot and Root partitions (don't see a need to separate 'em any more) cannot be in the Logical Volume. Shout if you have any questions.
