How is RedHat going to stay in business doing this? How would SuSE? At 17:24 02/27/2002 +0100, Roy Leembruggen wrote:
I understand that the latest Red Hat linux upgrade versions can be downloaded in ISO image format, each image being that of one CD-ROM of the set.
This apparently is very convenient, since each download can be written to a CD-R and one needs only 3 CD-ROMS to get the basic system running. Can anyone tell me whether this is also an option with SuSE ? This seems to be an easy and sure way to avoid the hassle of kernel re-compiling.
Thanks in advance - Roy

b/c its paid subscription, thats why. Not only that but RedHat is pretty much out from desktop war, going after servers (where they suck as well, but oh well). SuSE at the moment has subscription service where they sppse to send out new product as soon as it arrives, so idea of just providing some ftp server with same paid subscription wouldnt be such a bad idea (subscription fee might as well pay for decent bandwitch) but i bet there will be as usual horseback riders who just will try get login/pwd and load that stuff for free anyway. I mean face it - we all eat ftp traffic that suse is paying for(on suse.com i mean).. We using product that they spending time to develop.. Paying for nice box - i am gladly doing this (got all kinds of latest versions of SuSE 8)). What really bugs me is that last time it took about 2 months for 7.3 to hit shelves in US (at least in TX) . And its very very sad.. Sighs, Sergei

What redhat does I don't know, but in the scheme I had in mind one would pay for the downloads. No commercial difference to selling physical CDs, just a convenience to improve the distribution network. //Anders

Enough of the .iso talk. This thread happens WAY to often with the same result..more and more bandwidth sucked up for fruitless discussions. Please take this off list. It's damn annoying. And read the archives for this flamewar. It's there..over and over and over again. -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- "I've never been quarantined. I don't think my post qualified as a flame. I think it is a valid idea. Not every post about isos is "gimme gimme gimme" //Anders
Wasn't specifically siting you...hence the fact that I took all the text out of the message. It was point toward the iso discussions. :) I didn't mean for anyone to take it personally. It's just that these long discussions about isos, subscriptions and other such things that SuSE isn't planning. Best place for these suggestions is feedback@suse.de :) No worries. I just get a lot of email and these same discussions over and over tend to get annoying and repeat themselves.
