FTP deamon

Please help me.... in my Suse 7.1 dsitribution the ftp server never works, even the telnet and the other inetd daemons work pretty good, the problem beggins when I try to connect to the local ftp.... it always says error 421, service not available.... but the service is available... at least in the configuration files.... please... help me...

Install problem - Video

I'm having an issue installing 7.3 Pro on an older machine. It has a Diamond S220 video card, and a no name monitor. When installing 7.3, the installer uses some default X setup which seems to work just fine on this machine. However, as soon as it gets to the step of choosing a monitor, I get into trouble. No matter what choice I have made (tried just about all). The video from that point on goes wacky on me, and X is hosed from that point on. Even trying Sax2 from a command line later is really painful since the default is so screwed up. Is there a way I can tell the installer to just stick with the default settings it has been using so far? Thanks, Ron -- Ron Joffe rjoffe(a)yahoo.com

Error Setting Up Interprocess Communications

KDE 2.2.2 on SuSE 7.1. I reinstalled SuSE and upgraded KDE to 2.2.2. When I attempt to start Xwindows with KDE I get the message: Could not read network connection list /root/.DCOPserver_linux_:0 is not running. I've searched the KDE list achieves without finding a solution. Any help will be appreciated. Oh yes, the Gnome desktop works. Thanks in advance.

KMail and group emailing

Using Suse 7.3 and Kmail 1.3.1, is there a way to set up the addresws book so and enitire group can be emailed at one time? I need to be able to send the same email to over 50 people on occasion, but I can't figure out how to do groups, other than create a "Group address file with all 5o addresses listed (a lot of duplication). Any ideas? Harry G

accelerated mp3 playing

I am using the 7.3 pro version with the 2.4.16 kernel on a presario 2701 laptop with an Intel 82801 audio controller on ALSA. When I play mp3's they sound like they are played in an accelerated form , like playing a 33 record faster... Audio cd's sound ok nevertheless I was wondering whether someone had encountered such a problem before and could provide me with some pointers on how to solve it. Regards, Josef

In the pre 7.1 days that had an x86 iso (just 1 cd) with the base install of the current version. It had all things needed to run linux and a few extras. nothing really special. I do agree with haveing an iso(s) that might not be the current version, but instead one version behind. I dont see the big fuss there. and they can still keep it a minimal install like they had it before. While yes there is lots and lots of documentation out there. It is still kinda lacking in some areas. But suse does not really provide any real help if you want to do a package by package download of their distro. At least have something that tell package dependencies so the user can have some idea of what to get instead of takeing guesses, or have something that can gide your through makeing a complete minimal install downloading package by package, and turning all of that into a bootable ISO. I'll even write the damn things for them if let me know what packages are needed for a complete minmal install. plain and simply put, if newbies dont buy suse, and they wish to use it and dont really know anything about linux and/or dont know where to go get info on it, they are kinda left empty handed. > I am more concerned with what your saying. sendmail/new isp

Chad and Jim, Hi, thanks for your suggestions. Perhaps I should have added that this is just a single user machine with a dial-up connection. All that I am trying to do is to send my mail through my new isp's server as I did with my other isp. The entry in my sendmail.cf is DSsmpt.btinternet.com and relay-domain is smpt.btinternet.com. Everything works great. But when I change the files I listed in my first post to reflect the new isp it doesn't work. It has me puzzled as I don't know what else to possibly change. I am including a portion of the /var/log/dead.letter from when I try to send an email to DallamWych(a)netscape.net. It seems to me that having a competent CEO /CTO that knows more than just business it the key to success. I deleted them, without any so-far- to-be-noted damage to the Windows system. The script that you say is available at the perlmonks is not obvious to the casual observer. When I go to the URL, I find all sorts of other things, but nothing related to Windows or secret files. Q1: Is the two-line code that you have above the whole thing? If not, why don't you just publish the whole thing? (You can see that I know nothing about perl.) Q2: How does one run a perl script in Windows? Q3: What makes you think MS has access to these files? I have a firewall in my LinkSys router that should keep MS and other hackers out. Shouldn't it? BTW: I tried Opera in Windows, at work, and I liked it. Unfortunately, it did unrepairable damage to a Visual Basic file, or its component parts- .dll's or something--that somebody wrote for the company network, that took complex information from a BPCS database on an AS400 system, and made it readable in Windows. The so-called helpdesk people claim that the only way to fix the problem is to erase my hard-drive, reformat it, and reinstall Windows. Not likely, I told them. But I now have to live without this valuable program. Bah on Opera. --doug
