APC Back-UPS CS 350VA USB and SuSE 7.3

Greetings! I'm thinking about getting an APC Back-UPS CS 350VA USB to automatically shutdown my small file/DSL/firewall server (AOpen micro-ATX motherboard, Cyrix M2-333Mhz, 128MB, 10GB IDE hard drive, SCSI cdrom drive, and no monitor). Does anyone have any experience with this particular UPS? Does the stock SuSE 7.3 kernel support a USB UPS or do I have to hack and patch the kernel to make it work? Recommend a similar model with serial support for under $100 USD? Thanks! Christopher Reimer

no graphical login

Hi, I have SuSEV8.1. I had to login a single user to update some graphic card drivers. the RPM installation went OK, but now when I reboot my system I don't get the graphical login screen anymore. I only get a text screen ith a login prompt. How can I get back to graphical login screen? Thanks, --Juan

changing out hardware

hello all, i have SuSE v8.1 personal installed. i'm just curious about how a current installation handles new hardware. i come from a windows95/98 background, and i know how win9x handles new hardware being thurst on it cold turkey. i've done this more times than i'll admit, for family and friends and at work, but you can change out a video card, or sound card and win9x will still function well enough until you can install the new drivers. i've changed out motherboards and win9x is ok with it. shoot, i've taken hard drives with win9x on it from one computer and stuck it in another computer with different hardware and windows will still boot, figure out that you changed everything, and allow you to install the drivers for all of the new hardware. win98 is the end of the line for me with windows, and i am reading everything i can get my hands on concerning linux and SuSE, but...... i'm just curious is all... [[ and i would of course make sure that all hardware ]] [[ was fully compatible first with SuSE linux]] can i pull out a video card, stick a new one in, and my current installation of SuSE would be ok with that and allow me to configure the new Xserver needed? can i yank out an old motherboard and put a new one in using the same processor and memory, but a different chipset, and my current installation of SuSE would be ok with that and not cough up hairballs? are floppy drives and cdroms so generic now-a-days that they are interchangable in a current installation of SuSE? [ i am assuming yes on this one ] [ but 3rd party confirmation is always nice ] could i buy a new computer system, minus the hard drive, take my current hard drive with SuSE on it out of my older computer system, stick it in my new system, and expect SuSE to be ok with it? or........ is it just better to backup, re-format and re-install anytime i do a major hardware change with SuSE? are there any basic general guidelines to follow when changing out hardware on a computer with a working linux installation? my experience with linux is rather limited right now, but if i have some idea what to expect, then i can plan properly for it. and i am rather curious, since these areas don't seem to be talked about much. i am also the "computer guy" for a lot of people and they are starting to ask about linux, and in some of these areas, i don't have any idea what to tell them. especially, since i generally help people roll their own computers. thanks in advance for any input. michael hallsted -- Michael Lawrence Hallsted home: mailto:tbhccs@cal.net http://www.hallsted.com/index.html http://www.softcom.net/users/mikey719/index.html work: mailto:webmaster@jfmco.com http://www.jfmco.com/index.html

MPlayer GUI (was: Mplayer sound)

Following my post last week, I've been doing some more with this. As Clayton suggested, I recompiled Mplayer from scratch. If I start gmplayer, I can add mp3s or oggs to a playlist and play them OK. If I run: mplayer -ao alsa9 -vo xv -dvd 1 -dvd-device /dev/dvd the film starts OK, with good sound. However, if I run the same list of options with gmplayer instead of mplayer, I get the message about the PC not being fast enough to play this. The relevant console messages are attached. I then tried Karol's rpm, but this refuses to launch, with a message that it can't open .VMG info. Again, the console messages are attached. In the event, I have got Xine working, athough it does its usual thing of not playing direct from the GUI - you have to go to the dvdnav submenu and select one of those. I'd still like to follow up why MPlayer isn't working as expected, though, so if anyone has some good lines of inquiry .... Thanks Kevin

Samba Server And Suse 8.0 Setup.

Hello I have basically a suse samba server setup. Eth0 is for the internet connection (cable). Eth1 is my internal network. I use eth1 for my samba server. When i have the shares/ drive letters mapped, whatever, Ill goto access them and that computer will just lockup or timeout for about 1 minute, then it will resume operation normally. I have approx. 5 comptuers on the suse server, and they all do this from windows xp to windows 98se. I am using set up addresses of 192.168.0.x, where is greater than 2. My question is have or is there something Ive setup wrong to cause this pause to occur. ? Its becomming very annoying..and frustrating. Im using kernel 2.4.18-64GB-SMP with a dual processor setup. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Every package installed is orginal versions from the suse install cdroms. (no updates done). Anything come to mind. btw, ive replaced the switch, with a new netgear one, and all the networks at startech ST100 Realtek 8139 chipsets on 100Tx. Anyone... !

Playing DVDs

I've been trying to play DVDs on my SuSE 8.1 box with only partial success. Using either MPlayer or Xine, I can play DVDs but the playback is very jerky. Playing DVDs on the same box (Athlon 1.2 GHz, GeForce2 MX/400) under Windows is smooth, so there is definitely some improvement possible. One possibility that occurred to me is DMA settings for the DVD drive. However, under SuSE 8.1, it's running as SCSI emulation. How do I check whether DMA is enabled - there's no listing under the DMA tool for the emulated drives. What else should I look at, or do I resign myself to not watching DVDs under Linux? USB scanner help

Hi Folks, Does anyone have experience with USB scanners and SuSE 8.0? I've been trying to connect a Canon "Canoscan N670U" for the past few days with no success. I even downloaded and installed the latest sane/xsane which are reported to work with the Canon using the plustek backend. The scanner is seen by the kernel and is reported in /proc/bus/usb/devices. I set the vendor and product id's to match in the plustek backend, but still no joy. Yast2 finds the scanner's name, but doesn't recognize it. sane-find-scanner finds nothing. Is there something obvious that I'm overlooking? Thanks, Lew Wolfgang

how to mount a vfat filesystem with mod 777 ?

Imagine the following situation: - computer 1 has linux running and there is a vfat partition mounted - computer 1 is running samba on that vfat partition (i.e. the vfat partition is a share of samba) - computer 2 wants to have write acces on the samba share The problem is, that computer 2 has no write acces, because the vfat partition is mounted 755. The samba.conf file is the following: [public] comment = Schreibbares Verzeichnis path=/home/sure/netzwerk/public public=yes readonly=no browseable=yes create mask=777 How can I make the partition mounted as mod 777 ? touchpad and usb mouse

I have a toshiba laptop (SuSE 8.1) that is working very nicely (ACPI excepted). The touchpad was my 'mouse' until I decided to plug in a USB mouse. The USB mouse now works very well, but I am unable to use the touchpad. I presume that this is in the XF86Config file somewhere but I am unsure as to what the settings should be for a touchpad. If possible could I use both, plugging in the USB mouse when I need it and using the touchpad when 'in transit' ?? Many thanks Pete

Quanta too wide for screen

I am using Quanta Plus 3.0-pr1, which came with SuSE 8.1 Pro. I can only resize the window vertically, and not horizontally. It is wider than my screen at 768 x 1024. Is there a work-around for this?
