Genealogical Software?

Is there any good genealogical software for GNU/Linux? I've been doing a lot of genealogical research and have noticed there are some standard formats for the data, as well as some tools available. another shell problem

Hi everybody, thank's for the help. i've now an other problem : i want the script to tell me when a directory has a size up to 500M. i can't get it with du -hs /mnt/charlie/backup because it shows size of the directory and the name. here is the code i've done : for size in ( du -hs /mnt/charlie/backup ); do if [ $size = 500M ]; then echo Need to rip a CD fi done thank you for help Charlie Ti

installing scsi

Originally to: All Hello All! The installation program from SuSE 7.1, did not find my scsi cd player. So it must be installed afterwards. When I do a modprobe aic7xxx, I can mount the drive. I have put in rc.config alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx ..but it is not loaded when I start linux. What did I do wrong? I have an adaptec 2940 scsi card with a plextor cd writer. 7.2 scsi aic7xxx same as mandrake ??

Hi All Im wondring if SuSE 7.2 has the same flakey aic7xxx driver as mandrake 8.0 has ?? the reason i think so is that when i use my cdrom/cdr/dvd drive connected to my onboard aic7890 the system just hangs until the job is done. Has anyone tryed to compile ther owen kernel 2.4.4-4GB with this driver ?? Next Q How do i compile a kernel with the options as the default kernel use to load the driver as modules ?? and is this possible. Rember im a newbi so not to complicatet please :-) TIA Dan

I'm new to SuSE linux and I am a bit confused. There is a lot of great stuff in SuSE, but it can get a bit overwhelming. I just loaded 7.2 on a workstation and Server. I linstalled the DHCP (server) and wanted to change the init levels so that the daemon will start. In Red Hat there is a command line utility called ntsysv. I could not find it in the SuSE distribution, but I did find ksysv which seems like a nice utilty to do the same thing. However I can't seem to start the darn thing. The error message says I do not have permission--even if I run KDE as root. When I had 7.1 loaded I was able to get into the utility. It asked me to enter the root password. Now it does not give me the choice. It launches straight into the utility asks what Distribution I am running and then tells me I can't run it. Any Ideas. ( I opened a window and tried to start the utility on the command line. It failed because I was trying to display on my login user Xwindow server.

cdrecording probs

Hi, I have one strange problem with CD-burning: I made all the stuff with my CD-burner the way Eddie Howson had it done, and now it can be used as a reading device (/media/cdrecorder), but when I start kisocd I get the following error message: mkisofs: No such file or directory. Invalid node - <directory> ################################################################ Is your filesystem empty or am I not able to read mkisofs's output? ################################################################ I had this already before 7.2, but then I had a way to ignore this message and burn a CD nonetheless, and in the end, everything was all right. Any ideas about that? (K7-500 MHz, 256 MB, SuSE 7.2, Fujitsu-Siemens 4*4*32 CD-RW 'hdd' with emulation as SCSI device sg1 resp. scd0) Wolfi ================================== mailto:wolfi_z@web.de

SuSEfirewall2

I am setting up a system using SuSEfirewall2, I have a internal network, a DMZ and the outside network. I am trying to setup a website on the DMZ to be available on the internal network. I have set this line up in the firewall2.rc.config file: FW_FORWARD="192.168.0.99,192.168.5.2,tcp,3300" This should redirect requests for 192.168.0.99 port 3300 to 192.168.5.2 port 3300 shouldn't it? If not what am I doing wrong. tdfx-voodoo5 and glx

I can't seem to get 3d stuff working correctly. I can do 3d stuff it's just the texturing is not there. I can run "ssystem -bench" and it runs at about 90fps but the earth is a white ball. No textures. I'm running x4.0.3 kde2.1.1 kernel 2.4.4-SuSE with the 3dfx kernel modules compiled in directly (not a modules). My XF86CONFIG file has the has glx in the modules section and tdfx in the driver section. At first I only got 6fps and the earth looked normal. I must have been using the mesa renderer. I ran swithx2xf86_glx then the fps went up to 90fps but the earth is white (no texturing)??? I'm starting to think my board is bad. Surely not. Problems with sound after yast2 update

Hi folks Having a few problems Since I performed an update of yast2 components using the online update facility, I have lost all sound on my sysyem. I am unable to hear anything using both alsa and yast2. I reinstalled the original yast2 with no success. On booting, the system states that the required modules are not found in /lib/modules. I deleted the modules and installed kernel 2.4.4...no change. Then I reinstalled 2.4.5...still no difference. The following is the console log out put. Both kernels are rpms from /people/mantel, and both worked fine previous to the update.I am using 7.1 with a SB128 Any suggestions? In case anyone wants to know, procmail 3.20 is out and the authors are recommending that previous versions be upgraded for potentionally exploitable security issues. This problem exists if procmail is setuid or setgid on your system. The issues at hand are that procmail could be forced to crash in a way that could be exploited to provide access to a system.
