when i look in the archies for suse mailing list and click on jun 2001 when it comes back it says jan 2000-jun28 2001 why does it show all the way back to jan 2000

Anyone using Mantel's 2.4.5 kernel w/ nVidia cards? Did you just have to recompile the kernel module for the nVidia card? Found the problem. folks figured I'd respond to list (never hurts to have it on the archives). Turns out I had two problems: 1. BIOS Flash to a unstable version. (seems the bios file 6vx7-4x.f38 has some issues) 2. Mismatched RAM modules. (I yanked mods out of my machine and used my wife's as a test bench). After putting one of these modules in her machine and putter her's in mine I could compile the kernel with one bombout. So I booted to windoze (shiver) and flashed to older bios revision... Since then it's been ok, and my CPU temp has dropped down off the 80+ level too. After a fresh compile and an immediate reboot to enter BIOS and check temp there it was a full 20 degress cooler. Now I know that some would drop because the proc was no longer under load, but bear in mind this is in comparison to same sequence with bios f38. I've sent emails to gigabyte but no response. (shrug). Thanks for your help in this matter guys, it's appreciated :-) Next task: Is there a way to make the nvidia 1251 drivers run under mantel's 2.4.5 kernel? What am I missing? Soundblaster16 issues with Suse 6.4 and 7.1

I posted about this exact same problem a few months ago, but got so frustrated with this problem that I gave up and took a break from Linux as a whole. Now, I'm back at it. Here's the problem: I have a Soundblaster 16 ISA card that I cannot get to work with Suse 7.1. I've never had a problem with this card working with other distributions and I have a crapload of them on my bookshelf. I've PnP disabled in BIOS. My card isn't PnP. Yast2 won't detect the card, and if I try to add this card to the system setup manually, I get the error, "The kernel module snd-card-sb16 for sound support could not be loaded." I tried ALSA and without ALSA....either way won't work. I've tried to install OSS (pkg opso) but it seems this is not on the Suse 7.1 CD set. I did a search of the disks for this package when installing some other software from the disks and the search was negative for opso. Will the same opso from 6.4 work with Suse 7.1? If so, I'll try it...if not, is there a 7.1 opso build on Suse's site? I haven't looked yet because every few minutes, Suse will lock up my whole system and I end up having to reboot...console messages right before lockup show "recording overrun," whatever that means. I'm also sure I have all the soundcard settings correct (DMA, IRQ...). I do get sound with all the errors, but only at the X-server's initialization (KDE, actually). MP3 and video players won't work....before, they would work but I couldn't control volume and equalizers. I don't know why Suse has always had problems with my SB16. It's worked in numerous other systems I've built, with other OSs, but NEVER Suse. I've only gotten it to work with Suse once and I had to ditch ALSA and use OSS for it to work....now I find that the OSS drivers aren't showing on the CDs for 7.1. I'm not about to buy another soundcard, although I should. The SB16 is so damn old...any cut-rate OS should detect it. I'm about to backup some material so I can soon try a reinstall of Suse since sound isn't the only thing I'm having problems with (CDR and NIC also). I'll give the current install about one more week before I kill it and have another go at installation.

Just from reading the press releases and so forth you should have realized that 7.2 was 7.1 with updated packages and updated yast2. Due to the fact that SuSE does deliver ftp updated for such things as KDE2 you cannot count that against them. They always said that they don't tell you to buy every release. And this is good. It shows Linux development is coming to a point where they don't crank out huge differences in apps and libraries and kernels over the next two years. It will be constant, xf 4.x, KDE2, 2.4 kernel, glibc, qt whatever-number, gcc 3.0, mozilla 1.x. icq & firewall. Cant make direct connections anymore

I used to have a firewall w. ipchains 2.2.1x I upgraded to 2.4 w. suse7.1 and couldnt get ipchains working even though It should have, so I upped to iptables. I run the monmotha firewall script for iptables, seems ok I cant get icq to connect apart from through the icq servers, anyone have any ideas. It says you should open UDP 4000 and this huge wacko list of tcp ports or alternatively open some and tell your icq client to use just those. Ive tried opening 2000-2020 and telling licq these are the ones, but still no joy. Anyone know how to get icq working correctly w. firewall ? thanks dids
