I did not get any answer from the rarefied circles in SuSE security. I have not updated postfix recently, is this binary associated with anything else? Or is there another benign explanation for the change? CUPS and SAMBA Printer

Installing ttf fonts under X 4.02

Hi all, I copied 650Mbyte of ttf fonts under /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype/ then I ran ttmkfdir -o fonts.dir It returns some error on some fonts: "font ./fontfilename.ttf: unknown usWeightClass X" where X can be equal to 0, 1, 4, 5, 7, 8, 17661 and "TT_Open_Face failed with 513 for file ./fontfilename.ttf" I do not know what do these errors mean, and I do not know how to fix them. As there are many files which does not look to give me any problem, I try to go further: as written in SuSE manuals I do "xset +fp /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype/" but it returns another error: " X Error of failed request: 86 Major opcode of failed requests: 51 (X_SetFontPath) Serial Number of failed request: 9 Current serial number in output stream: 11 " Again, I do not know what does it mean and I have no idea on how to fix it. I am planning to upgrade X to 4.03, but I do not think X is the problem here. Regards, Tazio

sendmail and postfix

Hello I'm trying to make a mail-setup for my home network. I was thinking about using postfix, because many claim it's better, and, more important, more secure than sendmail (I don't know if it's true). But I have some difficulties setting both of them up, posfix is completely dead in the water (was like that out of the box), sendmail can deliver local mail. What I want to do is the following: Clients in the network (Win9x and Linux) <--> firewall with sendmail or postfix running <--> internet static IP eth0, DHCP address from ISP - eth1, static IP I have one mailbox with my provider, it's something like guy123(a)isp.com, they have a POP3 and SMTP server: mail-in(a)isp.com and mail-out(a)isp.com The SMTP server of my ISP filters relaying, and access to other external SMTP's is blocked. Ditto for external connections to all my ports below 1023. What I want to do is the following, we have a number of mail address we use at home (like extra flashmail addresses, etc.) I want to set all clients up to send mail via my SMTP server, which sends it further to my ISP, but preserving the original FROM and REPLY-TO fields of the message. And for a number of addresses, I want to receive them on my server and have them delivered to local spools. I got the sending part working once with these parameters (in sendmail) # "Smart" relay host (may be null) DSsmtp:mail-out.pandora.be # who I masquerade as (null for no masquerading) (see also $=M) DMpandora.be It works, but if I send a mail: FROM guy.van.sanden(a)isp.com, it arrives as FROM: gvs(a)isp.com (gvs is my local userid.), and you can't reply to that because the address belongs to someone else. I would also like to send mail like FROM: me(a)flashmail.com or something... At this moment, all my clients are configured to use mail-out(a)isp.com to send mail, but the from header can be whatever I fill in. Can this be done? Thanks for any help! Guy

Seriously OT: Need help with HTML

Hi All, I have a little deal where I need to run some javascript code when someone clicks on a link. The link shouldn't go anywhere.. let me explain. The link is on a person's name, and when they click on their name, I want to pop up a little window that gives them all of the information about themselves. I have the javascript already written, and the PHP code written to get the data from the database... it's the link part that is tripping me up now. I have this: <a href='' OnClick=MyInfo()>[person's name]</a> and it's working -- the window pops up and everything looks great... but the page that the link is on does different things in different browsers: IE5.x/Netscape 4.x/Mozilla 0.9: Tries to access the directory that the URL is in, subsequently getting a "directory browsing is denied" error. Konqueror: Works fine, but the link isn't underlined like a link is supposed to be. What can I do? Has anyone tried to do something like this before? Here is the problem after much searching. Either the SAMBA RPM's or the CUPS RPM's are not providing the smb backend. If you check /?/cups/backend/ there should be a smb backend that allows cups to get a samba connection. Now I checked the cups docs to see how to rectify this. It states to do a ln -s 'which smbspool' > /?/cups/backend/smb . I have tried this and it does not work. I have also tried to setup a spool by running smbspool //ARTEMUS/HP697C . This does not work. I am using the 2.0.9 samba rpm's from the 7.0 update directory and the default 1.1.6 cups rpm's from the 7.1pro cd. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Okay maybe I should of explained a little better. If you install SuSE with Yast and select minimal install, it still install a lot of rubbish (my opinion) that is not needed. SuSe 7.0 installation

I have just tried my first SuSE installation of 7.0 Professional, which went pretty smoothly except for one or two small problems which I wondered if anyone else had encountered. Everything looked fine until the end of the installation and configuration, and the system proceeded to complete it final boot. 1. 5 minutes timeout on starting HTTPD When it got to the point of start httpd (Apache), however, the boot froze for about five minutes before continuing, and when I checked httpd was not running. I spent a few hours hunting around, and eventually found the problem to be some hard coded FQDNs (linux.local) in /etc/httpd/midgard/midgard.conf It seems that anyone installing Linux with a host name and domain name other than the installation default should have had the same problem. If not, what did I do that was unusual or wrong? I couldn't see any mention of 'midgard' in the support database... (and to be honest I am not sure what it is for). 2. Power Status BAD The installation leaves runlevel 3 trying to start the UPS daemons via the /etc/rc.d/argo script. I have no UPS connected to ttyS0, so I can't imagine why this is being tried... I assume I just remove argo from the start and stop entries for runlevel 3 using the SysV init editor. 3. No power off. At the end of a shutdown, the screen displays the message: Failed services in runlevel 0: networker This seems to be an error in the file /etc/rc.d/networker where the argument to killproc is missing the /usr/sbin prefix which was used in the startup. 4. Several of the symbolic links in /etc/rc3.d (and rc2.d) are to non-exitant files. In particular K10pcp -> ../pcm (should be ../pcp) K96Frontbase -> Frontbase (should be ../Frontbase) K97FBWb -> FBWeb (should be ../FBWeb) Appart from these things, it was a pretty clean install. I checked the Suse web site, but couldn't see any errata for the release mentioning these problems, and I don't see how I would be the only one to encounter them??? DigbyT -- Digby R. S. iptables and DNAT

SuSE 7.1 Professional w/ 2.4 kernel Have been implementing an iptables firewall and have read all the how-to manuals and the normal packet filtering is working fine. I next added NAT Masquerading by: iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth1 -j MASQUERADE Tested and this is working great! Then I went o my DNAT rules. I want all incoming packets destined for the firewalls external interface and on port 25 to be rerouted to an internal server with a private IP on port 25. I use the following NAT call: iptables -A PREROUTING -t nat -p tcp -d $ExtIP --dport 25 -j DNAT \ --to $SMTPSvr:25 I get no errors but when I tried to telnet to the $ExtIP from the internet I get nothing but: Trying <External IP address>... Tried lots of things (list below) but can't get this working. Feel like I'm missing something... can anyone suggest a solution or something else I can try? NOTE Additional Trouble shooting 1. I have cleared the tables and set the default policy to ACCEPT to confirm there are no conflicting rules. 2. I can telnet from this system to the $SMTPSvr:25. 3. I have this working on another system using ipmasqadm. 4. If I clear the DNAT I get a message that says something like connection refused (smtp isn't running on the system). 5. The command iptables -L -t nat displays the following under Chain PREROUTING (policy ACCEPT): DNAT tcp -- anywhere <IP of Public Interface> tcp dpt:smtp to:<IP of SMTP Server> 6. A ethereal sniff on the telnet system reveals packets outgoing but never get any reply. 7. The command lsmod lists: ipt_MASQUERADE iptable_nat ip_conntrack iptable_filter ip_tables ipv6 3c509 isa-pnp

Having worked for M$ for 9 months and approaching the end of my contract, I can tell you that they are not the ones to fear. The ones to fear are those that keep howling to have the Government step in and write rules and regulations to stop the SEEMINGLY big bad monster. That is all this nation needs, more rules and regulations. Write better software, make sure you have a user interface that is better than windows, and people is convert. (Simply my humble opinion.) Every version breaks compatibility with other software to which you might transition. When UCITA passes in Washington State, it will be illegal to reverse Microsoft software for the purpose of importing its data files. If you ban proprietary upgrades right now, there's an excellent chance you'll have a clear conversion path when the time comes. A huge issue is brewing with copy protection. I've heard a vague and unsubstantiated rumor of the existence of some modern proprietary software that requires a new "key" from the vendor each and every time you reinstall. According to this rumor, they charge significant amounts (like $35.00) to read you that key over the phone. Every app, $35.00 (or whatever) Get a virus? $35.00. Disk crash? $35.00. Windows meltdown? $35.00. Motherboard dies? $35.00. Windows registry got too big? $35.00. And in 5 years, do you think the vendor will be willing to sell you the key? Or will they force you to upgrade all those apps you use just to get at ancient data? And of course, those new versions might convert your data to a format not importable into any other software. All this is rumor, but my reading of the text of the UCITA proposed legislation tells me that it's all perfectly legal and enforceable under UCITA. The software vendor wouldn't really do this to their customers, would they? I don't know -- how do you think Microsoft would handle such a situation? Would you bet your business on it? You can't switch all your apps at once. You must continue to use your Windows box as an appliance to run a few apps. You need to be able to install and reinstall that appliance and those apps over and over again in years to come. Recompiling the Linux kernel seems to take longer than I would expect. I've switched from a 233MHz processor to an 850MHz one, but the process doesn't seem to be going even twice as fast. So I'm wondering what's the most likely limiting factor in my system. The critical parameters: 850MHz Athlon Tyan S2390 motherboard 256MB PC100 memory 30GB 7200 RPM hard drive I assume that nothing else is likely to be relevant. Paul
