Samba problem

I upgraded Samba from 2.0.8 to Samba 2.0.9 binaries from the 7.0 update directory on my 7.1Pro box. Previously samba was working as my Primary Domain Controller. Now, I cannot connect from either side.(server<->WS, WS<->server) When I check the nmb.log, it shows that it is registered as the domain controller and that my other box had attempted to connect. However it times out. How can I fix this? Should I backup my smb.conf file and remove the samba rpm's and reinstall the 2.0.8 rpm's? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! NeoFax

I've had this problem just recently. I had a fully installed machine that was working fine. One day I turned on the computer, and it hung like that. I booted my Linux system from the install recovery cd, remounted my root "/" partition as read/write (mount -o remount /dev/hdb1 /) and then ran lilo. This rebuilt my master boot record (MBR) and I was again able to boot from lilo. I'm running 7.0 Pro. fetchmail is for automating the task of pulling mail down to local Unix accounts, from a remote POP3 server. Sendmail is for sending and receiving mail via smtp protocol. For example, I have a dial up ISP account to the internet. I use fetchmail to pop3 my email from my ISP's mail server into my local Unix accounts mail file/folder. I also have sendmail configured to forward my locally composed email to my ISP's mail server. I have configured a smart host and turned on the expensive flag in my sendmail.cf, so that when my machine is not dialed up to the internet, it queues the mail in /var/spool/mqueue. If your mail is in /var/spool/mqueue, and you are sure it is mail destined for your local account (not composed from your local account destined for a remote email address), then that suggests that you are able to receive mail at your local machine via smtp. If this is the case, then you don't need fetchmail at all, you just need to tweak sendmail configuration files to properly handle incoming mail. Typing mailq from a command prompt will tell you a little bit about the mail, if there is any, in /var/spool/mqueue. Best 3D graphics card

I'm looking for a new graphics card. By "best" I mean supported in linux with least problems. History: Had Matrox Mill II, well supported but no 3D Currently nVidia TNT2 M64 (CardExpert), problems The nVidia card suffers from various problems including: - In runmode 3 (not X) the terminal blanks to white screen (sorta defeats to purpose of the screen saver). - Login and out of KDE via kdm will sometimes hang the system. - When switching from VC7 to VC1 the terminal is trashed. Note: installed latest nVidia rpm from their site into SuSE 7.1 Can anyone suggest my next card which will have the least problems. Perhaps another Matrox product. I'm not looking the the fasted/cutting edge but something with 3D which will work without bugs. Does such a thing exist? Thanks for any advice, Terry

On the box in small print it says that Hercules is a division of Guillemont I am using Suse 7.1 Prof but with no updates to Kde and have found the card to be stable and problem free. I did however use Yast2 to update the drivers for it to ver 0.9-6. Hi, I am running stock 7.1. As of yesterday I started to receive the following warning message: find: /var/spool/cron/lastrun/cron.daily: No such file or directory from the cron daemon. Problem is that the file does exist, albeit empty. Any suggestions as to what this means? TIA Francesco

[SLE] Network only works when X-windows is visible

Hi, I've installed Suse 7.1 on a machine equipped with two network cards. eth0 is handling my cable modem connection over twitsted pair. Ethernet chipset is SIS900, located on the motherboard. Yast2 mistakenly used a realtek driver for this (known bug of Yast2). I changed the etc/modules.conf line to read "alias eth0=sis900" in stead of "alias eth0=real1234-two" (don't look at the numbers 1234 since I can't remember them) Internet access using my cable modem is fine. So far so good. eth1 is handling a local network using coax. Chipset is realtek. No mistake in Yast2 this time, though it took me some time to figure out why eth0 was not working at first :-( A ne2k-pci driver is running for this ethernet interface. And it's working ok. I have a second PC (let's call this one B) connected over the local coax network and it's pinging the first machine (called A). When I type CTRL-ALT-F1 on machine A, the machine switches to a nice text-mode login screen. The switch takes some time (seems strange, but after some 5 seconds I'm in text mode). Now the ping fails. I switch back with CTRL-ALT-F7, I'm back in graphical mode. Now the ping works again ! This is highly repeatable. Text mode --> network not OK Graphical mode --> network OK When I'm in text mode, and check with netstat -i and ifconfig, I see that there are no received packets in A (although machine B is sending ICMP packets by the dozens). Also when I do a ping from A to B, I get no transmitted packets. In stead, they are counted as errored packets (on the transmit side). Since this error could be linked to the graphical card: it's an on-board nVidia TNT type (motherboard is 370 type). Now the tricky part is that I needed to give the machine to my uncle yesterday evening because his daughter needed it right away because she needs to know linux for one of her exams. My uncle can live with network-only-in-graphical-mode since that is his normal working mode anyway. Has anybody any clue about what could be causing this behaviour. I'll have some time on the machine in two weeks time, but any hints on what to check for are highly appreciated. I'll try to update this post tomorrow with more detailed HW-configuration data. I almost have it working now. I made a mistake when I extracted the binary drivers. The extractor automatically defaults to root. I just moved the drivers over to the /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers directory and the multimedia drivers to the multimedia directory. Now XV is loading fine and recognizing that I have a ATI All in Wonder Pro card. Now the problem is when it goes to load the bttv driver it errors out. However, I do not think this is the problem. My question is will GATOS work with the new drivers? PAM.D and rsh connection

Sound and KDE 2.1

Hi, Ever since I upgraded my SuSE 7.0 KDE to 2.x, I have been having problems with sound: 1. Can't play midi. The midi player acts as if it's playing music, but there is no sound. This started with KDE 2.0.1 (the first KDE 2.x version I installed). 2. VMWare gives me an error message saying /dev/dsp is busy so it therefore does not play any sound in the guest operating system. 3. Starting with KDE 2.1, sound is garbled. It seems to be overly affected by system load (windows opening, etc). 4. Perhaps related to # 3, there is a process sucking up CPU time: artsd. Reiser and 2.4.4

Hi all I've downloaded and compiled the 2.4.4 kernel sources from Mantel's directory, but there doesn't seem to be Reiser support built in - the kernel panicked when it tried to read my boot directory. Doing a "make xconfig" showed the Reiser fs option greyed out. So, is Reiser support available in 2.4.4, and if so, what do I need to do to get it? Oh well. Back to 2.2.16 for now :-) Olly

ISA SCSI CDRW

I am using SuSE 7.1 with the 2.4.2 kernel from the SuSE ftp site and have a Phillips SCSI CDRW on an ISA Adaptec 1542 card. I have played around with isapnp until I now get this in my boot log. Also, in /proc/scsi/scsi is only one line that reads, "Attached devices: none". It is not a problem with the user as such. You also have access rights. The default access is localhost. This means that you can only access mysql from the PC on which it is installed. There you have to use the mysql (i can't exactly rememer which utility) and change the user rights. It would go somewhere along the lines of this mysql> show databases; ... mysql> use mysql; ... mysql> show tables; ... mysql> select * from user; .... this will show you a table. You are interested in the first two columns. Host and User. You should have an user admin. The host is either localhost or the hostname of your linux pc. You need to do change this to %, which means any pc. (Don't forget to change this later to whatever suits your needs. mysql> update user set host='%' where user='root'; It will probably give an error ERROR 1062: Duplicate entry ..... Ignore this and do a :- mysql> select * from user; the first entry for root should now have the host set to % Have a look at the other tables maybe you need to change something there. I can't remeber, I'm old and stupid. You should now be able to access the server and login as root. I assume that you are using a bill gates super os powered pc to access your mysql box. If so I would recommend that you use MySQLFront to manipulate the MySQL server. It is 99% good 100% free software. Could anyone point me in the right direction? I have gone to mysql.com and tried their solution to change a forgotton password. And that doesn't work either. I still can't connect to my database. I have setup mysql from scratch on other distro's. But this one with MDK8 is just about driving me nutz. h3rb --- Incoming mail is certified Virus Free.
