If your drive is SMART capable, you can use 'ide-smart /dev/hdx' to check it. It's on the ap series of your SuSE distro. Do a 'man ide-smart' for more info. Hi, You do not say what make of drive you have, but for IBM there is the "drive fitness test" which I have found helpful and which runs from a bootable CD (there are instructions for linux). I can't immediately recall the URL, but I am attaching the welcome page, which I d/l'd with the software. I dare say that other manufacturers have equivalents. Regards, Geoff
