I tested putting "hdparm -d 1 /dev/hda" in the beginning of /etc/init.d/boot on my home computer with a slow disk. The total fsck time on 7 and 5 GB partitions was reduced from 2:55 to 2:14 (23%). It wasn't much, but I expect bigger difference on my computer at work (faster disks, 90 GB). Is there any reason why hdparm is run after fsck during the booting process? Alphabet soup.

As a newbie I am kept very busy adding to my Linux vocabulary. There are hundreds of filenames, program names, scriptwords, abbreviations, codewords, commands, utilities etc., most of them unintelligible, and many of them copies of one another. Can anyone point me to a comprehensive dictionary of Linux/Unix words that is not peculiar to any one distro ? Best regards. -- Geoff Bagley G3FHL

Hello, It's the new guy again, first I have to admit I can use Linux like a man who can drive a car but gets into a tank...so it's all in theory, I jus don't know where all the switches and pedals are yet...no what that is out of the way and I have notified everyone that I don't know jack I might get a reply that I can comprehend :) Okay I've (well I think I have) secured my Linux box...with SuSE harden, a few FAQs on disabling services, changing permissions and general stuff....now I want to create a user that has ROOT ablites with out the ROOT name. Sounds Easy, I thought it was but NOPE, none of them work entirely right, kind of like a co-worker of mine ;p Anyway that's my issue. Thanks from A NEWBIE, Aaron, L. Johnson

[SECURITY] Default postfix main.cf reveals software name and version

Hello, I know this is a very minor thing but I was just setting up a mail server and noticed that by default, SuSE's postfix mail.cf is set to show OS/softwareinfo. Most security professionals recommend that all such banners be disabled, since banners can sometimes be quite helpful to crackers. The offending lines in /etc/postfix/main.cf are: mail_name = Postfix on SuSE Linux 7.1 (i386) smtpd_banner = $myhostname ESMTP $mail_name Running netcat quickly reveals this info: jw@testbox:~ > netcat xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx3 25 220 servicemail123.com ESMTP Postfix on SuSE Linux 7.1 (i386) I suggest commenting out mail_name and setting smtpd_banner to wither nothing or $myhostname, or some other such harmless thing. Consider carefully what really belongs there. P.S. Is "ESMTP" actually needed for anything? This is very commendable indeed. I liked the quote given below. Matrox is a strong supporter of Linux with a dedicated team devoted to further enhancing its compatibility and feature support. Matrox released specifications for its various Millennium graphics cards in 1997, 1998, and 1999 and became the first graphics card company to support single-slot dual-display cards on the Linux operating system in 2000 I remember when I first got into Linux in 1997 Matrox were despised by the Linux community for not releasing the specs for the Millennium I card. It took months of campaigning and boycotting Matrox before they gave in and we finally got suitable drivers. I had to run my Millennium I at 640x480 16 colour for quite a while. It's quite a turnaround really. Anyway, my point is, if the Matrox of 1997 could be persuaded to open source the Linux driver then the Nvidia of 2001 could also be persuaded given enough of a push from the Linux community. Sean. I may just concider getting a Matrox card now...I think this negates nVidia's bullshit excuses for not open sourcing their drivers...since Matrox has and even provided a utility for configuring X in every mode...even duel head an T.V. tuners.
