[NEWS] When will SuSE have XFS support?

Well, in case you don't know, the long-awaited* XFS journaling file system has reached version 1.0 and is "out" now: http://linux-xfs.sgi.com/projects/xfs/ I know they've been working on a modified RedHat ISO that uses mostly RH's stuff, with the installer and kernel patched for XFS. I'm wondering if SuSE would consider doing something like that for pro users? i.e. take maybe CD#1 and patch it the kernel and installer with XFS patches. C'mon, SuSE, go for it! spm files- wha?

I am trying to install the xntp pkg off the cd#3 in 7.1/personal. I can open the .spm file with the package manager, and pressing "install" seems to elicit some activity that LOOKs like something is being installed, but it isn't! What is an spm and how do I use one???

Ideal system specs for a new Linux box

Folks... Im about to retire my p166 for a new SuSE Linux machine In the past I've never paid much attention to hardware spec related questions (due to the fact that I never had new hardware to deal with). The time has come where Im going to build a new box and would appreciate suggestions as to need advise on motherboard <I was planning some type of high end 200mghz asus> cpu chipset <I was planing an althalon 1G> sound card <no good idea> video card <no idea I like 1024x768 or 1152x846> nic <I have nics now but they are different brands need recommendation> least concerned hd <at least a 7200 rpm 20g or so> memory <probably generic p100 256m> modern <some sort of non winmodem> cdr <guessing they are all the same IDE> This will be a SuSE Linux only machine and Id appreciate advise so as configuration/detection is fully recognized and supported by SuSE Linux Im looking forward to putting this box together and really need some advise so I don't get something that's painful to set up. I figure its just as easy to ask people who have went before me then to get it wrong thanks rob

It's been well tested and goes. Besides, if the XFS crowd restricts itself to RH, why should SuSE pay the bill? Volker

Kmultimedia crashes on startup

When I start Kmultimedia (noatun), in KDE 2.1.1, it crashes with a segfault. I get the following out put if I try to run it at the xterm: planck@linux:~ > noatun KCrash: crashing.... crashRecursionCounter = 2 KCrash: Application Name = noatun path = <unknown> planck@linux:~ > any ideas how to fix this? SCSI problem?

I have an adaptec 2904 controller for my cd burner. It usually works properly and the software has no problem, I think. But sometimes, completely at random for what I have understood, cdrecord gives me an error: scsi sendcmd: retryable error I have no idea about it. What is it? Is it a hardware problem?? Tazio

any mail client that read's outlook stored messages?

Hi, I have in the same box suse linux, w98 and w2000 -as well as BeOS, and mandrake- finally I could configure the outlook of w2000 to share the mail with w98. I'd like to do the same in linux, I need an email client which can read the ".eml" mails stored with outlook, and if possible that store the mails in the same format tht outlook. The target is to be able to read mail all my os's and not have to change to windows every time I want to read mail. Another thing, I know this is not the rigth place to ask but, does someone know how to "export" or copy the message rules in outlook? sorry for the "off topic" :) I hope to be clear, if not please let me know! Thanks a lot!

Frustrated with Linux

Well, I have finally gotten to the place where I am frustrated with Linux. Why? Because, a couple of weeks ago I purchased a CDRW drive. The MAIN reason I purchased it was to store all of the Linux stuff I download off of the internet. Well, after getting it installed and functioning, I set about to learn how to use it (burn CDs). I learned how to use mkisofs and cdrecord, and Xcdroast. (I also have Win Me installed on my machine.) Adaptec Easy CD Creator and Direct CD came with my drive, and with Direct Cd I can format a CD in UDF format and write/read/erase files to a CDRW disc with no problems. I thought, cool, this is what I want to do in Linux. When I set about to learn how to do this in Linux, I was very disappointed to learn that UDF is at best a kernel patch to get it functioning. Yes, I know read support is in the kernel options, if I want to recompile the kernel, but not write support. I want to use my CDRW like a big floppy, but I can't in Linux. I want to USE Linux, not spend all of my time hacking it or recompiling the kernel. I am an end user, not a hacker. I have real work to get done and I'd LIKE to use Linux to get that work done. Sorry, but I have to use what works without having to spend a lot of time getting it working. I have been using Linux now for about one year, and have come to love it. However, this is a very frustrating roadblock for me. Unless someone can show me how to use my CDRW store/read/write/erase individual files onto my CDRW disks easily (Like DirectCD does in Windows Me)I may have to abandom Linux for the time being. I don't know anything about UDF, or how long the tecnology has been released, but I would think the Linux community would have better support for it than it does buy this time. Please help me stay with the Penguin, jvb
