Help with Setting up dual boot

I rebuilt a box once and ran into a similar problem. As it turned out one of the memory slots was shorting out against an unused metal post (used to attach the motherboard to the case). The new motherboard had a different arrangement of mounting holes, and one post was unused. It was making contact with the soldered underside of a memory slot. I just used some electrical tape on top of the post and that ended the problem. Alas, it didn't help; it's an Award bios and a no-name motherboard. And none of the descriptions of beep codes mention continual, regular beeping; they all describe groups of beeps or sequences of up to 11 single beeps. This guy beeps until I shut him off. The motherboard has slots for both DIMMs and SIMMs. I've tried using a 128MB DIMM from another computer but couldn't seem to get it to seat properly. (The original 32MB DIMM I was trying is probably bad, since the other [working] computer didn't recognize it.) I'm thinking of trying to pick up a pair of SIMMs (which is what was there when I last used the board), but I don't want to waste my money on SIMMs for a board that wouldn't run anyway. So perhaps I should turn the question around: if you start up a motherboard with no memory, is it likely to emit continual regular beeps? Hi, This motherboards usually uses memory banks in pairs, when one bank is broken then it's like you have no memory on it. Perhaps the memory timings(too fast?) aren't supported by the motherboard. It happened to me more than once...and it was always memory problems... StarOffice 5.2 setup freezes in SuSE 7.1

Hello, I just purchased the SuSE 7.1 professional, I selected on the setup to install the StarOffice 5.2, and eveyrthing worked fine during the installation of SuSE After my first boot on the system (KDE2) I saw the StarOffice icon on the desktop, I clicked on it and the installation screeen of StarOffice appeared, i click next on the button, then i click Next again, the screen freezes i cannot move the mouse, anything, sometimes after 1 minute of moving the mouse you can see the the pointer moves for a few seconds and then the screen continues to be freezed. I cannot run any other app, I cannot kill the application, I also can press the reset button of my computer :(, while its freezed i can see the the hard disk is not reading or writting anything. Does anybody know shy is that?, I've looked on the Support Database and in the list archives but theres nothing related to that (The list archive search gives me ZERO results using the StarOffice keyword...weird). [OT] Rebuilt computer just beeps

I'm trying to rebuild a computer out of a combination of old parts (AT case, Pentium 133 mobo in particular). When I start it up I get just a continual sequence of beeps about half a second apart. The monitor light stays yellow rather than changing to green, indicating there's no video signal. The behavior is unchanged even when I unplug all boards and peripherals except for the video card and keyboard. Possible causes I can think of are: - Defective memory (which I just bought) - Dead CMOS battery - Something shorted out on the mobo (which did at one time work for me) Clearly there's enough working intelligence on the mobo so that it at least can beep. Does anyone here know what message the beeps are probably sending to me? Paul
