Hello Group: I am using Roaring Penguin version 2.6. OS is Suse 7.0 ADSL modem is: SpeedStream. My ADSL provider definitely uses PPPoE. _____________________________________________ Results of adsl-start command: . . . . . . TIMED OUT /usr/sbin/adsl-start: line 161: 429 Terminated $CONNECT "$@" >/dev/null 2>&1 Results of adsl-status command: Link is down - could not find interface corresponding to pppd pid 505 ______________________________________________ What does it mean, and what should I be looking to modify/change? Webwasher 3.0 for Linux

WebWasher is a very effective and user-friendly ad, cookie, script filtering proxy for web browsers. I originally used it on Windows (RIP) and am pleased to find that a linux version has been released. So far I have found that it is very good -- stable and effective, if not quite as lean and mean as junkbuster. It has the advantage over JB of filtering images based on size. modules question

I was havind problems getting my printer to run after I installed SuSE 7.1. I turns out that module "parport_pc" was not loaded. In my /etc/modules.conf file I have: alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc options parport_pc io=0x378 irq=none,none but parport_pc is not loaded. I had to add the following to my bot.local file. modprobe parport_pc modprobe parport modprobe lp Why do I have to add stuff to my boot.local? -- Christopher W. NETDEV WATCHDOG help needed

I just loaded 7.1 and a recomplied the 2.4 kernel (with ipmasq and iptables support) and I am getting an error message for my second network interface. I can do in ifconfig and the interface is up but here is the message from /var/log/messages: Mar 17 19:14:43 lucky kernel: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth1: transmit timed out Mar 17 19:14:43 lucky kernel: eth1: Transmit timed out, status fc124010, CSR12 00000000, resetting... Any help / ideas would be greatly appreciated. TIA

The Beast is still chained, but not by ip!

Players... The Sony -S, the Beast -B, the brain dead operator -BDO and various SuSE users -VSU... The saga so far... In the last episode the BDO hooked Beth0 (192.168.201.3) to the EN104 hub. He also hooked Seth1 (192.168.201.2) to the same hub. And, he notes that Seth0 (192.168.200.2 as gw) was hooked to the Cisco 675 DHCP server-router.. B can ping S but not Cisco IP. B can surf S using 192.168.291.2 in the Konqueror URL, but even though hosts, network and resolv.conf has settings pointing both ways B cannot find S without the quad address. BDO has thought about installed a 'named' nameserver, but like so much of this stuff, he has never done this before and if it is not any easier than ipchains or firewalls he may look at purchasing a commerical package. (Sorry folks, BDO only wants to use this box for his own purposes, he doesn't want to become an admin and like so many newbies he doesn't feel he should have to. BDO promises not to force programmers to learn integration of 2nd order DEs, or derive a 3D least squares algorithm or compute Gibbs Free Energy on a combination of chemical reacts in order to write their software.) S can ping B. S can surf the web, but not B. At the advice of VSU the BDO checked ip_forward. Seing it was in the vmlinuz.config file, BDO rebooted and watched as the kernel announed that ip_forward was enabled. Also, BDO verified that /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward did indeed contain a '1'. VSU also recommended that B's /etc/resolv.conf contain the same values as S's. The BDO made it so, using YaST2, no less. VSU also recommend that ipchains has to be installed. It was already. BDO tried to use ipchains but always gets 'protocol not available' when attempting 'ipchains -P forward MASQ' and other variations recommended by VSU. "Ah!", thought the BDO, I'll enable the SuSE-FireWall! He did, using "eth0 and masq" as the parameters. In looking at the YaST2 log of the action he noticed a lot of 'broken pipes" listings. So, BDO rebooted. As the kernel messages rolled by BDO noticed that while attempting to install the SuSE-FireWall the kernel also got a lot of modlule errors with a "protocol not avialable" as the main message. BDO noted that ipchains is listed as installed. and root@JLKreps:/home/jerry > ipchains -V gives: ipchains 1.3.9, 17-Mar-1999 BDO has given up on ipchains since he knows of nothing more he can do to make it work. He wonders if the problem is that he is using S as both a 'router' and workstation.???? If the kernel is configured to do it, if ipchains is present and SuSE's own YaST2 scripts can't make the SuSE-FireWall work who is BDO to argue? The BDO ran wmnet on S and watched as B fired Konqueror and attempted to display the BDO's home URL http://www.jlkreps.net. He saw the EN104 flash on both connections and he saw the Cisco net activity lights blink repeatedly. On wmnet he saw each pulse go by and noticed activity on both the hub and the Cisco. But, S never passed anything back, and only the heartbeats were display by wmnet. By contrast, when S fired into same URL, wmnet showed the speed and the bit patterns, looking somewhat like an FM signal being displayed on an oscilloscope. So, BDO set here typing, broken hearted and dispondent. He is not worried if John will mary Jane, opps, wrong saga.... mmm... the BDO thinks, "I wonder how much the ISP will charge me for two IPs?" ip address altered by SuSEconfig

Hi, At the present moment I am being driven crazy by SuSEconfig changing my ip address in the /etc/hosts file. (SuSE 7.1) My entry is 10.212.32.2 laptop.gqs.net lappy which gets changed to 127.0.0.2 laptop.gqs.net lappy I am wondering why the script is doing this. The entry is at about line 245 of the /sbin/SuSEconfig. The comment mentions it is needed to get plp to work. I can't work out what plp refers to. The problem I have is that some of the software I run uses the IP address to validate the licence which then fails after /sbin/SuSEconfig is run. I don't want to comment the line out of the file without knowing what it is doing it for. Thanks in advance, Graham Smith ----------------------------------

[SLE] Cannot get SBLive to work under SuSE 7.1

Hi, I am having real trouble getting my SBLive sound card to work under SuSE 7.1. Yast2 and alsaconf both see the card but can't load the modules. Unfortunately I am at work now and don't have the output of the error, but basically it fails with invalid parameters. In previous versions of SuSE it has always worked fine. I downloaded the latest kernel from ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/next/linux-2.4.2.SuSE-4.tgz as the changes file mentioned a fix for the emu10k driver. I also downloaded the latest 0.5 series driver from alsa last, night built and installed it but that didn't make a difference either. Anyone else had the same problem? Thanks, Andy.
