DVD image on Hard Drive - Compressed?

I am wondering if there is a way to put the entire DVD image on a hard drive which will most effeciently use the storage space. What I would like is to have the DVD image available on the network so I can hit it with NFS when I want to run YaST to add packages, etc. Is the image on the distribution disk compressed in a way that simply copying it using cp would uncompress it? Is there a "right" way to do this? TIA, Steve

scsi emulation problem in 7.1

I can't get scsi emulation to work in 7.1. I appended hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi in lilo, i added modprobe ide-scsi to /etc/rc.d/boot.local, as suggested in the book. Dmesg: <(scsi0) <Adaptec AHA-294X Ultra SCSI host adapter> found at PCI 0/13/0 <(scsi0) Narrow Channel, SCSI ID=7, 16/255 SCBs <(scsi0) Cables present (Int-50 NO, Ext-50 NO) <(scsi0) Downloading sequencer code... 422 instructions downloaded <scsi0 : Adaptec AHA274x/284x/294x (EISA/VLB/PCI-Fast SCSI) 5.2.1/5.2.0 < <Adaptec AHA-294X Ultra SCSI host adapter> < Vendor: Model: Scanner Rev: 1.40 < Type: Scanner ANSI SCSI revision: 04 <scsi1 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices So the module is loaded, but cdrecord -scanbus only finds the scanner. Can anyone help? Thanks ps I've been using scsi emulation since suse 6.0, mostly without problems, so I don't understand why it should not work this time.

It was a choice on one of the screens where you are picking which set of packages to install. There are two buttons - the one for kernel 2.2.18 is checked by default, and you can click on the 2.4 button to install it as well. After the install it appears as one of the kernel options in the new graphical Lilo boot menu. 7.1 and new Kernel installs.

Good day, Well what can I say? This is the most beautiful looking distro I have evr seen, and most powerful :-). The biggest problem I am having now, and I hope someone from SuSE or this list can help, is that when I tried to install 2.4.2 Kernel last night it did not ever make a modules.dep for the kernel and subsequently failed. Any reason why? This was easy to install, saw my Ifeel mouse and Nvidia card, I am using the Nvidia drivers as they are faster than the open source ones. But, its only set at AGP X2 and I would like to have it run at AGP X4, every tar.gz rebuild has failed because it thinks its built for a different kernel...I guess if I get the first one fixed, then I can get this one fixed too :-). Hi everyone, Well, I went to BestBuy today (for reasons other than to buy SuSE 7.1), but even though I've complained numerous times about price, and has insisted I was going to wait for the ISO's - I bought 7.1. As I went in the store I told myself "Self: you aren't going to buy this, you should be economical, wait a few weeks, and get the ISO's", then a little later I told myself "Self: you are going to buy the personal edition, but you do not need the professional edition", needless to say, I walked out of the store with a shiny new copy of SuSE 7.1 _PROFESSIONAL_ edition. <g> Anyway, I haven't installed it yet, although I'm hoping to perhaps have time to try it tonight on my desktop, and on my Inspiron 5000e notebook later this week when my new PC Card NIC comes in. So far it looks good - I like the new manuals they look quite good, and I'm anxious to try the DVD install. Great job : first 7.1 install + nvidia problems

Hi all, Got "my" 7.1 yesterday, upgraded one box, new install for the other one. First let me congratulate SuSE people. THEY DID A FABULOUS JOB. BRAVO !! My first impression : let me qualify it as "lindows". First I started with the upgrade of my 2xPIII800 + Nvidia Ultra 64 Mb. : Ugrade took +/- 60 min ( 800 packages ). Had a little problem as I started with CD 1 and tried to switch to DVD after the CD1( have a cdrom + dvd drive ). It kept telling me the numbers of cds were wrong even when I put the cd2 etc.. in the cdrom. Had to do a hard reboot. I upgraded that box because I was scared about those Nvidia driver. So far, nothing broken ( except xine even with permissions ok ), still using the old 7.0 XF86Config. WELL DONE SUSE ! Second box : Complete new install. ( PIII 800 Nvidia + geforce DDR ) Let's start with the end : My "lindows" qualification > /dev/null, I've been swapped to the hard reality of linux. And let me tell you, I feel much better. Did a normal install + office, double kernel install on a 34 Gb scsi disk. +/- 12 min to have the 340 packages installed. The first problem came when enabling 3D. Had an awfull dark black screen with dark yellow install GUIs of yast2 !!! Continued the install, got to sound and eth. When selecting the appropriate items, Yast2 just kept screaming something like " the following errors have been written to /etc/modules.conf" whithout specifying the errors. Ok, so I rebooted and guess : ofcourse a black screen. Came up till the graphical login where everything screwed up. No more control, hard reboot needed. Well, as it took me only 15 min to install 340 packages, I stated for a reinstall. Did not enable 3D. Test was Ok. Still had those yast2 error message for sound and eth config but everything came up. As I was prepaired, had already downloaded fixes of 7.1 on suse ftp before. Installed yast patches. Had no more errors while configuring sound PCI 128 and ethercard Dlink 530Tx. I was very shocked to see such a little modules.conf file, only having the parameters of the sound and eth0 !!!! This is certainly related to the previous yast2 problems. Have to ask SuSE. So far so good. Very impressif 7.1 Now, getting 3D working. Since I had those 7.1 nvidia NVdriver + glx already downloaded, did as per readme rpm --force etc....., ldconfig, depmod -a. ( ftp suse /X/Xfree4.0.2/7.1 ) sax2 -m 0=nvidia. Enabled glx. Got errors. Infact, NVdriver wasn't loaded. So insmod NVdriver. again sax2 ..... , skipping a lot of tweakings and sax2 came out whithout erros. Be sure to configure properly your mouse !!! Then I rebooted because I wondered what kernel had to say . Had a lot of kernal messages, NVdriver didn't load, alias char major 195 missing etc.. Well, had still in my backup the old /etc/modules.conf file. So I copied nearly everyting to the new one, right above the new yast2 items. Put insmod NVdriver in boot.local, rebooted again, had no more kernel observations. NVdriver loaded OK. Last thing, issued the command /usr/X11R6/bin/switch2nvidia_glx. and gears gives me aprox. 1300 fps with this nvidia geforce DDR card. That's it. Now I reserve my WE for setting up the new 7.1 nvidia drivers on my other box with the Nvidia geforce 64 Mb Ultra card. All this nvidia glx stuff took me 6 hours !!! I'll send a "nasty" mail to nvidia telling them those facts. How can a newbie without old config files make it ??? I feel sorry for those SuSE people having to answer those nvidia questions. I suggest them a to have a little nvidia howto on there portal ! As for SuSE, again, very impressif, great great job !!!! Cheers, Filip.

OnStream DI30 15/30Gb Internal IDE tape drive OK with SuSE ?

Anyone successfully using the OnStream DI30 15/30Gb Internal IDE tape drive successfully with Linux. I'm currently using SuSE 6.4 with 2.2.14 kernel and intend to use afio for my backups. I could upgrade to a newer SuSE if necessary. Cheers, Sean.

format of the suse-install-cd

hello list, How could one find out, with which boot-cd-standard the suse-cd is done? I know of eltorito, and the generic boot-cd-format, but i have no clue, which one would be appropriate for making a custom suse-boot-cd can somebody enlighten me on this? best regards, Alex
