Hi all, I just picked up the new 7.1 and will install tomorrow. Wow, very impressive. Quick question, how does one load both the 2.2.18 and 2.4 kernels? I could not find any info during the install. As far as I can tell from the accompanying books, it shows you how to install one or the other, but not both. Is this choice done in the advanced install? Thanks for your help. -- Best regards, Gary

I have not been able to read all the messages on the list in the past few days, and I'm wondering if there are any people out there who have a problem they have asked about and haven't been able to solve yet. I'm not volunteering to solve all or any of them, just trying to make sure there's no one being left in the lurch. Steve

Modeline "1600x1200" 189.00 1600 1664 1856 2160 1200 1201 1204 1250 Do know how the modelines in the /etc/X11/XF86Config relate to the "modes" we get from ctl + alt + KP_+? The only modeline I tweaked was the one above. I left all the others as SaX created them, and all seems well. I did put in the 1600x1200 manually in all the Screen subsections, e.g.: Section "Screen" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Depth 15 Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1152x870" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection"screen" . . . Why does an update rpm give me conflicts?

This is something I've seen often, but never understood. I went to apply the y2base-2.2.7-10.i386.rpm and received the following messages: Found 0 source and 1 binary packages installing binary packages file /usr/lib/YaST2/bin/parted from install of y2base-2.2.7-10 conflicts with file from package y2client-2.2.11-0file /usr/lib/YaST2/plugin/libpy2makefs.so.2.0.0 from install of y2base-2.2.7-10 conflicts with file from package y2client-2.2.11-0file /usr/lib/YaST2/plugin/libpy2makereiserfs.so.2.0.0 from install of y2base-2.2.7-10 conflicts with file from package y2client-2.2.11-0file /usr/lib/YaST2/plugin/libpy2packager.so.2.0.0 from install of y2base-2.2.7-10 conflicts with file from package y2client-2.2.11-0file /usr/lib/YaST2/plugin/libpy2parted.so.2.0.0 from install of y2base-2.2.7-10 conflicts with file from package y2client-2.2.11-0 If I am reading things correctly, the y2base-2.2.7-10 is newer than y2client-2.2.11-0. I will admit I don't understand RPM as well as I would like. Are these messages simply the result of having files relocated from one package to another? Could the update RPM have been packaged differently so as not to generate these messages? How do I know that I'm not doing something undesierable to my system? In the past I have simply selected the replace files button - when using kpackage. And I will do so now, but I don't like the feeling I get when this happens. Any ideas? TIA, Steve

Weird Font Problem

Hi everyone, I have a weird TrueType font problem. When I had SuSE 6.1 installed, I used a nice TT server called xfsft - everything was happy and good in the world of TrueType. However, when I went to 6.4, xfstt (notice: this is a different server than the one I used) seemed to do something odd with the fonts. For instance, if I take "courier" (the non-TT one), and open up a Konqueror window, text boxes that use this font are about the same size as those in Windows. However, when I switch to a TrueType font, the boxes get "taller" enough to throw off a good looking page's design. What seems to be happening, is that while the font is only, say 11 pt., the textbox is sized for a 13 or 14 pt. font. Same seems to be true in any other app I try TT's with. So, I was hopeful that this would work better in 7.1 with XFree86 4.02 - HOWEVER THE SAME THING HAPPENS. This is very unfortunate, as it makes it difficult to use TT fonts if I want the pages to look decent. Any ideas? the update rpms and yast2

The Net is Vast, and Infinate...******** This is probalby really stupid , in which case it'a about par for today <sigh> can I Download those rpms (that yast2 goes and gets in it's update mode), and put them on a cd??? ANd if I do that CAn I point yast 2 at it, and sasve a all for each and every work machine??? ( I can't think at all today.. IF I didn't know better I'd think my brain had gone on strike <heavy sigh> ) I'm trying to keep the time donw to a minimum for installs .. So , I'm collecting drivers adn other "bits n bobs" that need to be added or edted or whatever else it takes to get a nice happy 7.1 distribution on all my desktops. and I'd liek to get it done w/ out any shoulder surfing users ( it's just faster that way, I can answer question s once all the installs are done <g>) j afterthought--- PATH=C:\DOS;C:\DOS\RUN;RUN\DOS\RUN

THo the brain has gone into a fugue at teh moment, I thought I read soemthing about this not being a good idea w/ linux. It's a pci, not and agp card .... and was one of those under $30 cards where the entire documentation is on one side of paper and consisits of Made in China <g> Not nknocking that, but they seem to have the same ideas about documentation as most of our devlopers ( and you all know who you are <VBG>) If some nice wizzard would be kind enough to warn me off swaping it for the nvidia tnt riva 64. ( and while your at it expain why other nvidea ( which was boxed as something called a viper700 , or something like that.. I'll dig out the box tomorrow, but the piont it, they are pretty close to teh same card, although one has much more ram . They both have well more than ought to be needed to get a stable desktop and an opengl screensaver ! Extra Karma points to whoever solves this one <G> The age seems to be catching up , the eyes go, and then the brain and....... um, I forget ..... <G> Where did I put that ak 47 ammo anyway .... j afterthought--- I'm entirely too busy to waste time choosing a tagline to use.

Hi, I am going to need to maintain a rolling analysis of some data that can be represented by about 80 fields per incident - all of which can be represented either numerically (within pre-defined limits) or by '1', '0' or ' '. Where should I start to look for info about setting up the relevant background db and setting up a browser driven input and (limited) query system. Many thanks Francesco
