Hi, Please note - This posting is not a Troll/Flamebait etc, but from experience... ** I understand 810 may not be a good processor to use as a server. Very true (810 is the chipset though). ** But, previous to this we had installed 6.2 on another Compaq with a Intel ** PIII 440BX with 256 Mb Ram. Even on this m/c, 6.2 Linux showed the same ** behavior of hanging / slowing down appreciabely when users work remotely ** or run some system commands or copy some big files. Notice two things common between the systems: Compaq. Just because Compaq has a big name, doesnt make their hardware well supported, reliable and predictable. My company (a pretty large one), has 800 odd workstations and 30 odd servers custom built using genuine Intel boards and processors. These have never experienced this kind of problem. We actually dropped Compaq as a viable solutions provider as their hardware wasn't consistant and/or reliable. ** Even here, the 'top' ** and free commands always seem to show the used memory at around 70 to 80 ** % of the total memory of 256 Mb even just after booting. So, we cannot ** unilaterally blame it on 810. No, lets unilaterally blame it on Compaq. I suggest you go out and grab some bits to build your own system from precise requirements and shop parts. Get an Asus or Intel GX/BX board and use that. Do it and see the difference. See why you are throwing your cash down the toilet. But, my DeskPro PIII 450 is definitely up to par for the spec it provides. [SLE] assigning multiplie IPs to same interface

I'm running 6.3. How can I assign multiple IP numbers to the same interface? I looked a man ifconfig but nothing jumped out at me. IFCONFIG_0="192.168.0.1 broadcast 192.168.0.255 netmask 255.255.255.0 up" I'd like that machine to also respond as 192.168.0.2, for example. [SLE] DNS server and SuSE 6.4 with DSL at home?

hi; I read the DNS HOWTO and it seems promising, but it isn't for beginners. I understand little bit how Internet and domains work. I have DSL and one PC and I'm planning to host my pesonal web site at home - just one site first. Is it possible to use bind 8 and is there any other thing I need to configure. Of course, I know how to edit /etc/named.conf, but for example if my IP address is: 12.345.678.900 and my domain name is www.gelah.org, how many files should I have under /var/named ? and how many computers do I need if I want to setup nameservers. I'm new to Linux, so please give me long and step by step explanation. By default bind installs 3 files and 1 directory under /var/named. I know how to edit those 2 files and maintain the root.hint one. I think I will need to set up primary and secondary DNS. Is there anything my ISP needs to know? If I need extra files to be created what should I put. Maybe one of you alreay has a similar scenario, so could you email yours to me please? [SLE] IMAP server in /etc/inetd.conf

I have tried to start an imap-server on a new-installed SuSE 6.4. I could'nt get connection to the server from telnet to port 143 or from Outlook Express. When I changed the line in /etc/inetd.conf from imap2 stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd imapd to imap stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd imapd it worked. Have I messed everything up when searching for a solution, or is the SuSE standard installation "buggy"? ... Hi all, I have a LAN of 8 Win98 boxes, 1 Redhat 6.2 fileserver/Router and a Suse 6.4 Firewall with ISDN . On the Redhat : /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcg-eth0 DEVICE=eth0 IPADDR=198.168.1.254 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 NETWORK=192.168.1.0 BROADCAST=192.168.1.255 ONBOOT=YES BOOTPROTO=none /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcg-eth1 DEVICE=eth1 IPADDR=198.168.32.254 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 NETWORK=192.168.32.0 BROADCAST=192.168.32.255 ONBOOT=YES BOOTPROTO=none /etc/sysconfig/network file METWORKING=YES FORWARD_IPV4=YES HOSTNAME=server.adventus.com GATEWAY=192.168.32.1 GATEWAYDEV=eth1 To the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file I have appended : ipchains -A forward -j MASQ -s 192.168.1.0/24 -d 0.0.0.0/0 NO DNS has been Specified . on the SuSE 6.4 Firewall : I've been using Kfirewall to configure ipchains. i setup the IP masqerading = YES Purged all the rules Probed : eth0=192.168.32.1 ppp0=dynamic IP ( ISDN ) lo=127.0.0.1 I've setup a profile for my ISP and added their DNSs to /etc/resolv.conf I can access the net fine from my Firewall .. but not from any of the other machines ( Win 98 or Redhat 6.2 ) .. am I doing something obviously wrong ? PS (A) on each of the Win98s ( 192.168.1.x ) I've pointed the Default gateway to the Redhat box 192.168.1.254 . (B) From the Win98s I can ping 192.168.1.254 & 192.168.32.254 bit *not* 192.168.32.1 AND (C) From the Redhat I can ping 192.168.32.1 ( The Firewall ) A detailed reply would be very welcome + any suggestions that one may deem fit. The company I work for have a number of Compaqs - including a large quantity of Compaq servers. My own work workstation - from where I'm writing this email - is a PIII 450MHz Compaq, with an 8Gb SCSI drive and 128Mb RAM. It is crap. On paper, the spec is great - it really is - but in practise... I had a small Toshiba PII 300 with 64Mb in and that is faster than this. I don't want flames, neither!
