[SLE] Minimum install and compiling issues

1. will the SuSE6.2 "minimum installation" configuration be able to compile a kernel? i've installed this on my 486DX2 and some packages in the "network installation" option and i pretty much have firewall, ipmasqing, ipchains and my D-LINK NIC working (using PCI NE2000) without doing any compiling. 2. also, if i ever have to compile a kernel . . . is it possible to do this? a. compile the kernel in machine X (faster machine) using i386 option b. transfer/copy the bzImage and System.map to a floppy c. copy bzImage from floppy to the computer Y's (486DX2) /usr/src/linux@/i386/boot vmlinuz d. make modules in computer Y e. make modules_install in computer Y f. copy System.map from floppy to computer Y's /boot/System.map g. and of course run /sbin/lilo in computer Y any thoughts will be greatly appreciated . . . mac -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe(a)suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help(a)suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

[SLE] libjpeg.so.62-trouble

Many non-suSE rpms (sawmill, postilion dor example) depend on libjpeg.so.62. Libjpeg.so.62 is not included in SuSE 6.3. I've tried using Mandrake and redhat rpms, but the problem is that they overwrite the SuSE libjpeg-rpm (Yes I've tried "upgrade") with heavily reduced functionality as result. I've also extracted libjpeg.so.62 and placed it in /usr/lib, but the non-SuSE still complain about missing dependencies. Does anyone know how to fix this? [SLE] installation dies

When installing suse 6.3 in certain machines in doesn't pass the "detecting hardware" phase. Any idea why? I've been installing suse in several machines, some have this problem, some don't. What can i do? [SLE] Update SuSE 6.1 glibc 2.0 to glibc 2.1

Can anyone give me instructions on how to update my SuSE 6.1 system from a glibc 2.0 to glibc 2.1? I saw a note in the archives (from Thorsten?) that it was easier to reinstall - but I would rather not do that (mostly cause I am cheap right now and don't have 29.95 for a new version). The FAQ just mentions which glibc versions the various SuSEs are based upon. p.s. I did note with some satisfaction that 6.4 is going to be based on gcc 2.95.2 - yay! All the trouble I had this weekend was because my ancient SuSE 6.1 doesn't have the most recent glibc++ libraries. Hi guys, It works with the prompt, but in the x window at desktop when i click the CD-ROM to mount it gives me the error : KFM error could not work error log mount can't find /dev/hda in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab I already change the /dev/scd0 -> /dev/hdd My only solution is to run that command and make a link. Have a look at OpenMail, it claims to be a drop in replacement for exchange (except it drops into Linux not NT). I remember seeing it in a recent LJ ad, but don't remember the exact url. It's an HP product so http://www.hp.com would be a good place to start, or you could do a search for it. [SLE] Successful(?) setup of SuSE 6.2 with MediaOne cable modem (long a nd rambling)

Managed to successfully set up the above. Here's my story. Feel free to comment on it. Background: ----------- MediaOne RoadRunner in Atlanta. 3Com Cable modem. D-Link 10/100 NIC model no. 530TX+. The driver came with it on a floppy. I compiled the driver module and it worked fine (rtl8139.o). SuSE Linux 6.2 (kernel 2.2.10). 0. Things known to work fine with Win98. Got all the details such as NIC hw address, DNS, relevant IP addresses (DNS, DHCP srvr, my machine's IP, etc.) from the Win98 box and wrote it down. 1. Booted machine into Linux. Card not recognized. To solve this problem, did an "insmod rtl8139". The card then got recognized. 2. Started up Yast and added dhcp client. Nothing happened. ifconfig does not report an IP address for the card. ping does not return any info. But I can see the LEDs on the cable modem indicating that packets are flowing from the machine to the modem, and from the modem to the world. 3. Go back to Windows. Visit the SuSE site and other Linux sites. People want me to get the dhcpcd package instead of the default stuff that comes on the CD. But I am obstinate... 4. Also found out that the default IP of the card is set to 192.x.x.x but it should be 0.0.0.0 for some providers. (from SuSE support DB). 5. Reboot into Linux and set the IPs as above. No luck. 6. Read the FAQs again (I have printed some of the pages :-) 7. Ah ha!!! Look at /var/log/messages for errors. See that the DHCP server is sending good stuff but the client is rejecting them. Go to /etc/dhclient.conf and comment out the line that say "require dns" or something like that. 8. Still no luck getting an IP address. ifconfig eth0 does not show an IP address. 9. So I modify the dhclient script file and set up the temporary IP to be the same as the IP I got from the DHCP server in Win98. 10. Success(?). The dhclient starts up and gives good messages about accepting leases and all that. ifconfig reports the correct IP address. I don't know if it is dynamically setting the IP or just using the "temporary" IP which happens to be the same as what it got from the DHCP server. 11. Steady and strong connection to the net. Ping works. Ftp works. Netscape works. Start off reading about ipchains... that story is for another day Just wanted to convey my thanks to the Linux-people in general. All those FAQs and mails that you write are being used by someone somewhere who is grateful! -venkat P.S. No experience with other distributions but SuSE is just great in terms of support.
