[SLE] VMware and external modem

Hello Linux folks! I got VMware package from http://www.vmware.com I installed virtual Windoze NT on the top of Linux with a good hope that I will be able to use M$ Money application for my account tracking purposes. I have an external Zoom 56K dual mode modem which I happily used under Linux till I got ADSL. However, after installation of virtual NT everything, except modem seems to be working OK (sound, CR ROM, printer, Internet). (By the way, I couldn't run games like Quake, Half-Life, MDK on virtial Windoze NT, they just don't start.) My modem is connected to COM2 - ttyS1. Virtual NT sees modem properly but when I try to dial to my bank account from M$ Money I'm getting this error "ERROR 602. Enable to establish connection. No response from the modem." Does somebody know how to fix it? I couldn't find any detailed information on vmware site how to use modem under virtual NT. I tried to compile COM ports in the kernel as a module, still no luck. Could somebody help me with this issue or point me on Linux financial application which can dial to bank account to track and update financial information automatically. This time I'm not sure what I screwed up. I cannot compile programs as a user other than root. [SLE] Upgraded from 2.1.10 to 2.2.14 kernel, now I have pppd problems

Hello Everyone, I just upgraded to the 2.2.14 kernel (for USB reasons) and I now have problems with the 'pppd' daemon. I downloaded the 2.2.14 from kernel.org and compiled. I configured PPP as a module (even if I compile PPP support into the kernel the same result occurs) and the compile went well and booted up fine. However, if I try to dialup (using Kppp) as a user I get a message saying something to the effect "No kernel support for PPP". If the login as root and run Kppp, I can dialup normally. I rebooted the system using the 2.2.10 kernel and the problem goes away. I have no idea what the problem is, I even upgraded to pppd-2.3.10 and still I have the problem if I bootup with the 2.2.14 kernel image. I help there is someone out there knows what the solution is. [SLE] I can't play music CDs

Hi, I'm running SuSE 6.2, and I have a Sony IDE DDU220E06 DVD-ROM drive. I'm using a SoundBlaster PCI128 sound card with Alsa 5.0 drivers. My DVD-rom drive was detected automatically when I installed Linux, and it works perfectly for CD-Roms, but I can't play any music CDs. When I try to start most CD player applications, they just exit as soon as they start. I don't think it's a problem with the file permissions, since I can't play CDs as "root" either. My system plays other sounds just fine. I can play .wav files, and my games have no problem playing sounds. I can play CDs just fine when I boot into Windows NT. Can anyone help with this? I have this great printout of "Constructing a simple Firewall" From Chapter 3 of something. It is written by Bodo and Terrehon Bowden and there is no link or anything. Please, Where did I get this? I use it for OS2 and NT, and have had the least rework of any Java Compiler. Thanks. Several folks have suggested VMWare. Unfortunately, I never got VMWare running well on my machine. Right at the start, it doesn't like my mouseman+ and won't run in full-screen mode. That alone would make it unsuitable for VC++ and my weak eyeballs. VC++ is such a beast, I can't imagine it running acceptably under VMWare. (Of course I don't think it runs acceptably under any circumstances!) VMWare is in heavy development. I definitely plan to try it again in a few months. [SLE] problem with ftp update in yast

Hello, everyone. I decided to give the "yast system update via ftp" a chance to work its magic. Everything seemed to go OK for about 20 or so packages, then it stopped with the following error: free list corrupt (1307976) contact rpm-list(a)redhat.com This is in a red bar, so it looks like a pretty bad error. I am also confused by the reference to Red Hat. This machine was a fresh install from my new SuSE 6.3 CDs last night. This machine has never had Red Hat anywhere near it. The problem first cropped up for package afio, so when I re-ran the update, I excluded it from the list. Next time it stopped at alien. Restart the update, omit afio *and* alien, and this time it stopped at aps. I really don't want to have to keep stopping and restarting the job; I would prefer it to go through nice and smoothly all at once. Does anybody have any ideas about this. I checked the SuSE Support DB, and there is nothing there about this that I can find. Any help would be much appreciated. Right now I'm being forced to use that bloated buggy monster MS Visuall C++ and am switching between Windows and Linux (on the same machine) a lot. Loadlin makes it relatively easy to boot Linux when in Windows. Is there anything out there for going the other way? -- Kenneth R.
