Hi, I'm running SuSE 6.2, and I have a Sony IDE DDU220E06 DVD-ROM drive. I'm using a SoundBlaster PCI128 sound card with Alsa 5.0 drivers. My DVD-rom drive was detected automatically when I installed Linux, and it works perfectly for CD-Roms, but I can't play any music CDs. When I try to start most CD player applications, they just exit as soon as they start. I don't think it's a problem with the file permissions, since I can't play CDs as "root" either. My system plays other sounds just fine. I can play .wav files, and my games have no problem playing sounds. I can play CDs just fine when I boot into Windows NT. Can anyone help with this? Exactly which version of ALSA did you install? If it's 0.5.0, get 0.5.1a as quite a few bugs in the OSS emulation were fixed. If you don't want to build the rpm yourself, you can grab the binary rpm from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/pthomas/alsa :)

Are there any error messages displayed ? Anything in /var/log/mesaages ?
Without any error messages it's hard to pinpoint the cause.
Did you unmute the CD-Channel?
