[SLE] permissions on /dev/cdrom

Greetings SuSeLand, I'm trying to run a program cdcd that is getting a permission denied error on /dev/cdrom. (Seems like cdcd ran fine on a previous SuSE release.) My ls -al /dev/cdrom shows: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Dec 14 19:07 /dev/cdrom -> hdd and /dev/hdd shows: brw-rw---- 1 root disk 22, 64 Nov 8 13:48 /dev/hdd I did a chmod +rx /dev/hdd and things work. But is this the right way to do it? from a security standpoint? Environment:SuSE 6.3 2.2.14 tia steve. Python kicks butt! [SLE] invalid module parameter...

[SLE] pcmcia network card

Sorry if this seems long. I have 6.2 on a dell laptop. The network card supplied by dell is a 3Com 3CCFE575CT. I have pcmcia supprt installed and my psion-dacom modem card works fine. From the Dell site I downloaded an rpm of the driver that Dell say included the ammendements for the 'c revision of the card'. cardctl status says 3.3v cardbus card and status ready. I have tried to instal the driver using kpackage but that didn't work. I used rpm and acquired a /dell directory containing a file called 3c575.cpio and the read me listed below. Quote Dell has factory installed new modules for the 3com 3c575 Cardbus Ethernet. These modules enable the new C revision of this card. This directory contains a compressed cpio archive of these modules which may be copied to a floppy for backup purposes. To create the backup floppy: cd /dell/3c575 zcat 3c575.cpio.gz > /dev/fd0 To install the modules from the floppy: cd / cpio -i -H crc < /dev/fd0 End quote there is also (in the rpm) an /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 which reads: DEVICE=eth0 ONBOOT=yes I did all that and ended up with a /dell folder which contain 3c575.cpio and the readme listed above. /lib/modules/2.2.10/pcmcia contains a 3c575_cb.0 (and always has as far as I can see) Boot message still reports an unsupported card Where on earth do I go from here. I shall master linux (if it kills me) but this has me stumped. [SLE] Accents in Star Office

I'm not sure if this is a SuSE, XFree or StarOffice question (or possibly a mixture of them!) but I wonder if any of you can help: My system has a US-style keyboard, and in all applications EXCEPT dear old Star Office I can type accented characters quite easily, using right-ctrl+accent, then letter. However in Star Office I cannot get any character with a grave accent (for example: è or à - see, even Netscape lets me type them ;-)) unless I laboriously paste it in from something else. All others are fine (acute, cedilla, etc.) but not grave! I've poked around Sun/Star Office support with no luck, and fiddled a little with my X setup, but still it's just Star Office that won't play. You know how people often say things like "This is the last problem I have before Linux becomes my everyday/desktop/work/preferred etc operating system". Well, for me "This is my last problem before Linux becomes our household operating system." My wife is French and keeps (not unreasonably!) saying that we should go back to MS Word. Typing in French without all your accents is kinda frustrating... Help!!! [SLE] Scanner fun

I'm running Suse 6.3 on a Dell OptiPlex GXe (PII-300). I'm trying to get my HP ScanJet IIcx to work. I have an AdvantSys SCSI card in the machine and the proper SCSI support for it in SuSE. The problem I have is that, in the middle of the scanning process, the system freezes solid. Nothing short of hitting the reset button brings it back. This is really my last hurdle to making Linux my desktop OS. I appreciate any ideas! [SLE] SuSE + ADSL & BellAtlantic

Anyone using SuSE with a ADSL modem connected to Bell Atlantic? I have heard some phone companies are using Microsoft's VPN which isn't compatible with the unix standard so users are forced to use Microsoft products. A fellow at the local linux users group said he was forced to pay an additional $24.00 a month for a static ip address in order to use something other than windows. I am not interested in paying a penalty to use something other than windows. My first preference would be to continue using an os/2 box with the In-joy firewall, because it works well and is really easy to use, but if that is not compatible with Microsoft's VPN, using a SUSE box would be my next choice. If neither work then I probably will not get ADSL as I do not want to pay a monthly penalty fee because I do not want to use windows. yup, I gave up using C++ when VA1 came out, much more friendly and VA2 is even better ( they even took some notice of what we the users wanted changed). Version 3 is in the wings though. The other package I use is CA's Jasmine, it's nice to be able to dimension to 16 levels and create a field to do whatever you like and any format, including pictures, etc. and just put a browser pointer and your off and running. Anyway, back to VA it can also be used to teach Programming properly using Object Oriented Programming methods. find a copy of C. Thomas Wu's book An Introduction to Object Oriented Programming with Java McGraw-Hill isbn 0-256-25462-1 it's designed for classwork for a sem'r and has a web page with teaching aids etc at www.mhhe.com/wu It's not vaJ specific, but I haven't had a problem so far, once I got my copy of VA2 and did the intro lessons (to work out the differences from VA1) get back to me if you have problems, can't promise anything as i am finding a lot of gaps and proceedural changes converting to pure OOP, but once I download the Linux version, the first thing i'm going to try is some of my multi-os packs and see how it handles them. regards scsijon ps it also doesn't need all those dll's to be sent with a package, it has a builder>install function. Hi, I used to use a Colorado T1000 under Suse V6.0. After having upgraded to V6.3, (actually I reformatted and started again), my old commands such as 'tar cvf /dev/nrft0 /home/andy' or whatever, and the 'mt' commands don't work. Has something changed?
